Quick question, would you define backlinking - as just external links or would you also say its also internal links within a site.
So are internal links, be also considered backlinks?

If you actually look at the traffic graph from semrush the declines haven't been recent, they have both been in decline since the start of the year. What reasons besides the fact that their backlink profile may be over optimized with exact match anchors, is there for this decline?
The sites have great content, good social media signals (kriskris has over 16,000 followers!) I'm just surprised quality sites like these are getting absolutely slammed.
Hi i've been looking at the affects of googles algorithmic updates over the last couple years and the impact on sites/competitors i have been monitoring in the space.
Two sites which surprised me, in having a dramatic decline in search traffic were:
kriskris.com (over 200k visitors to around 10k)
only-cookware.com (from 40k visitors at its peak to only around 1000k)
(semrush traffic data attached)
Both sites have great quality content and social signals.
The only thing i can think of is a over-optimization of anchor text, and types of links.
Hi quick question, lets say you find writers in your niche and get them to do a guest post for your site and they have also built up alot of author rank (active google+ account, tones of social media followers).
From my understanding you cannot leverage their author rank for your site since their google+ profile needs to be connected to your site?
Unless it connected, you will not get any author rank benefit?

Im currently working with a new client and their goal is to create the absolute best content in their industry.
I've seen alot of articles on WHY to create the best content but not a lot on HOW to create the best content.
Can anyone recommend a article they recall which talked more about the HOW. I'm looking for a process on how to create awesome content, how to go about it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
From what i've read so far, if you do hire a writer/employee and have the articles posted under their name, but then they decide to leave the company, they take the author rank with them?
So how can brand, deal with this potential issue?
Hi i'm building a new site and want to start building up author rank right from the start.
If you are building author rank for a brand, do you think its fine to use the brand as the actual author of the content, instead of a actual person?
Or using a stage name rather then a persons actual name, and have your writers write under that particular stage name?
Would love to hear peoples opinions.
Cheers,
Mark
Hey in the process of building a new site in the fitness niche - targeting keywords such as:
<colgroup><col width="387"></colgroup>
| how to get a flat stomach |
| how to get rid of belly fat fast |
| how to get rid of belly fat for women |
| how to get rid of love handles fast |
| how to get skinny |
| how to have more energy |
| how to loose weight fast |
| how to lose love handles |
| how to lose love handles fast |
| how to lose lower belly fat |
All these keywords get decent search volume.
My question, alot of the content for these keywords would be similar for example - "how to get a flat stomach", "how to lose love handles" and "how to get skinny" would pretty much have similar content.
I could build a single page for all these keywords but i loose all the ranking benefits from doing on-page optimization such as creating a page for each of these keywords and optimizing it for each of these keywords (e.g. putting the keyword in the URL and Title)
But if i build individual pages, to me it doesn't look natural optimizing multiple pages for the keyword terms, plus i loose the benefits of building a single page (e.g. less costly, not as much outreach activity required, etc)
You could argue however that if you create individual pages for each of these keywords you are addressing the query directly as theres a slight difference between "how to lose love handles and how to get a flat stomach. But i guess thats up to google to decide.
So how would you approach this?
Cheers,
Chris
Hey currently building a new page on a clients site in the weight loss niche. The keywords he wants to rank for are the following:
<colgroup><col width="198"> <col width="64"></colgroup>
| [fat burning foods] | 49500 |
| [foods that burn fat] | 22200 |
| [fat burning foods for women] | 2900 |
| [belly fat burning foods] | 2900 |
| [best fat burning foods] | 1900 |
| [fat burning foods for men] | 1900 |
| [list of fat burning foods] | 720 |
His site is new, but he has excellent content production capabilities.
My question is, in terms of optimizing the page (the title and url) for these keywords would you focus on the highest volume keyword.
In this case the highest volume keyword is "fat burning foods" however is the most competitive and dominated by high domain authority sites (50+ vs. clients site which is around 30). Thus its highly unlikely he will rank for that keyword for quite a while.
But for the keyword term "best fat burning foods" the competition is alot less in terms of DA and other factors but volume is smaller with 1900 hits a month.
So would you optimize the page (the title and url) for "best fat burning food" or would you optimize thinking about the long-term and eventually ranking the keyword "fat burning foods".
My thinking would be to optimize the page for "fat burning foods". And that the benefits of optimizing (url and title) for "best fat burning foods" isn't ideal for the long-run.
Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Mark
Hey i have a client who currently has a large ecommerce store with over 50,000 hits a months. I've made the recommendation that they should consider adding a blog and invest in content activities. However they won't be able to do so for quite some time.
In the mean time what are some ways i can get backlinks (whitehat only).
I'm thinking guest posting on high DA blogs and sites is the best bet.
Also sponsorship, CSR activties, and the occasional press release.
Can anyone recommend any other ways, or methods i can use to obtain good quality links, or articles which discuss this topic.
Thanks,
Mark
Actually href free account has what i wanted. Problem solved.
Hey are there any free tools out there which can allow me to insert a large list of urls, and it determines the country of origin of the domain.
I know the paid version of majestic does, but i was wondering if theres any free tools?
Cheers,
Chris
I'm thinking about a game which i bring in a string which represents all the traffic for a particular vertical (e.g. car insurance). And place it in the middle of the table. Then the people around it will get into groups of 4 (representing websites) and think of content/creative ideas or ways to bring that traffic to them (organic traffic)
What do you guys think?
I want to create a widget, distribute it, and once it spreads or goes virals have the ability to change the anchor text and URLs which link back to my site remotely.
As for search engines i don't see any issue in doing this - because there's nothing wrong with it and its definitely not blackhat. More being Smart. Plus its designed to boost authority, and build the brand rather then individual keywords.
Hey i'm looking to create a widget in javascript which i dynamically change the urls and anchor text which link the widget back to my site remotely (via php) once it spreads.
I have heard peopled doing this before, but i can't seem to find a example.
Does anyone know of any examples/widgets or anything which can do this?
Hi is there any well recognized certified courses like Google Analytics or Adwords qualification that Google offers.
I'm after a course which is on split testing, multivariate testing and CRO overall.
Any suggestions?
Hey looking to find some cool games to teach link building when doing a presentation to people who are new to link building and to make it fun.
Any ideas?
Hi if a site is hosting its own videos (not embedding them on youtube) is there less benefits then getting youtube to host it, and then embedding the youtube video.
For instance:
For benefits such as building channel authority, easy to rank the video in the search engines hosted on youtube, better opportunity to increase visitors and traffic and higher chance for the video to spread and rank for the keyword when hosted on youtube.
What do you guys think?
Hi on my homepage i h ave multiple images They have the appropriate alt text for each image, but the text which the image displays is not written into the page and styled using CSS rather than placing text within an image.
Is this a issue worth correcting, or is it sufficient to have just alt text for each image.
Any major pros from having putting the text in the image into the CMS using appropriate CSS styling to achieve the same effect.
Hi i'm looking for a tool which can do a full content audit for a site for instance -
Find pages which:
• Lack text content.
• Finds pages with lengthy meta descriptions
• Finds missing H1 tags or multiple H1 tags .
• Duplicate meta descriptions.
• Find images with no alt text
Are there any tools besides the ones on SEMOZ which can enable me to do a full content audit on factors like these.
Or any SEO audit tools out there which you can recommend.
Cheers,
Mark
Thank you for your response, i'm going to focus on creating a single page of content for all the keywords terms. And address all the queries on the same page.
If i created individual pages, i would be creating very similar content. So it wouldn't really make much sense to create separate pages since each query can be logically covered on a single page.
Also it would be much better for anchor diversification, and efficiency reasons to create just a single page.
My only concern is the on-page benefits of creating individual pages vs. creating a single page for all the keywords.
Hi can anyone recommend any tools out there, which can allow me to scan a list of pages (urls) and give me back social data for each page (e.g. number of facebook likes, shares, twitter data, google plus, etc)
Cheers,
Chris
Hi i have quite a few keywords i want to rank for which are:
how to lose 10 pounds fast
how to lose 100 pounds
how to lose ten pounds
how to lose 30 pounds
I can either make separate pages for each of these keywords, but i would prefer to create a single page since most of the content would be very similar, plus i don't think Google would like the fact i'm 'targeting' these keywords individually.
Anyway if i do decided to create a single page for all these keywords, what advice do you have?
For the URL i'm going to have the keyword 'how to lose weight' or 'how to lose pounds', something generic.
Then i'm going to have content which pretty much answers each search query.
Now i guess the negative is the fact, i can't optimize the page for each keyword (e.g. keyword in URL, title, or on the actual page itself)
So my question how would you approach this issue?
How do i tell google (besides backlinking, i will be including these keywords in anchor text) my page is about how to lose 30 pounds or how to lose 100 pounds, when i'm not doing anyway on-page optimization for the keywords individually.
Regards,
Chris

Hi i have a site which i'm dealing with that has tag pages for instant -
http://www.domain.com/news/?tag=choice
How can i exclude these tag pages (about 20+ being crawled and indexed by the search engines with robot.txt
Also sometimes they're created dynamically so i want something which automatically excludes tage pages from being crawled and indexed.
Any suggestions?
Cheers,
Mark
