RE: Is it possible to find out how many indexed pages a website had at particular dates in the past?
Hi there,
Yes, all data is available in Google Search Console. From Search Console Dashboard go to > Google Index > Index Status > Advanced.
Hope that helps!

I'm seeing a slight rise in results for some of my clients and no change for others.

RE: To No Follow, or to Not No Follow?
Hi there,
I think you might be referring to "noindex" as opposed to "nofollow"? "Nofollow" is used to tell search engines not to follow the links on that page.If you don't see any use of these pages in search results and have duplicate content, consider adding "noindex" tags to these pages.

RE: Change domain.com to www.domain.com - influence on linkbuilding, seo, etc.
Hi there,
It's a delusion that 30x redirects can lead to PageRank loss. This has now been confirmed multiple times by Gary Illyes and John Mueller. As long as you properly implement a 301 redirect, there shouldn't be any issues.

RE: Is There Such Thing as Minor Penalties or Restrictions?
Hi Radi,
It's hard to say, but with the new penguin update, there is a chance that certain parts or pages of your site might have been affected by the new penguin as a result of spam signals, but there is still a lot of uncertainty.
Here is what Google said: "Penguin now devalues spam by adjusting ranking based on spam signals, rather than affecting ranking of the whole site."
They said "adjusting ranking" as opposed to penalisation, which looks like your situation.
More about it here: https://moz.com/blog/penguin-4-was-it-worth-the-wait
I hope this helps!
Thanks,

RE: How much do I have to differentiate syndicated content, exactly?
That's an interesting question. To get it out of the way, there is no duplicate content penalty. But, there is a chance that partner website will rank better for a specific piece of content than your own site, but there is no duplicate content penalty.
I would agree with Chris. If you can get your partner website to put a rel=canonical, that would be the best option.

RE: Why does my site have so many crawl errors relating to the wordpress login / captcha page
I agree with Mike. You shouldn't really allow bots to try and access wp-admin / captcha pages.
I would suggest adding the following line in your Robots.txt file: Disallow: /wp-admin/
You can also do the same to the captcha page or noindex the page.

RE: If I nofollow outbound external links to minimize link juice loss > is it a good/bad thing?
Hi,
I don't necessarily agree that too many outbound links can harm your own SEO. In fact, Matt Cutts has tons of outbound links on his blog, so as long as links are relevant from a user perspective there shouldn't be any issues.
Back to the follow/nofollow, if you are linking out to trusted and relevant sources, I don't see any reason to nofollow the links. On the other hand, if you have user generated content, I would nofollow external links, because you won't always know where are they linking out.
Hope this helps!

RE: 301 migration - Indexed Pages rising on old site
Hi,
Instead of using "site:domain.com" search to check indexation, I would use Search Console for more accurate information.
Did you verify your new site and submitted the change of address in Search Console?
Thanks,

RE: Why some of my strong backlinks don't show up in Site Explorer
Hi,
Althought OSE is a great tool, it's not 100% accurate. Sometimes there will be a delay and sometimes it won't show some of your links. The main purpose of OSE (in my opinion) - is competitive analysis to find link opportunities.
Thanks,

RE: What Is your view on wix domains?
I wouldn't say that Wix is that bad when it comes to SEO. Yes, there are limitations like no access to source code, robots.txt, little control over sitemap, canonical tags, funny "#!" characters in URLs (due to Ajax technology) etc. The blog part is pretty limited, you can't change meta titles, urls, descriptions, can't put rel=canonicals.
That said, I think Wix got a lot better in the last year or so, in terms of SEO. You can optimise every page of your site, they got better with the website load time, they use schema markup for product pages, etc.
Furthermore, I had few clients with Wix websites, and can say that we've achieved some good SEO results. Of course, if you have a large website that requires some advanced technical operations, I wouldn't recommend Wix. But, for small websites, I think Wix does a decent job.

Did anyone else noticed something weird?

RE: How and When Should I use Canonical Url Tags?
Hi,
Canonical tags are used when there is the same content in different locations of your website. For example, If you have a blog post that is also available in a printable version, you would want to put rel=canonical tag that points to the original piece of content (to tell search engines that you want them to show that original piece and forget about the printable version).
Please read this guide from Moz. It will explain everything you need to about canonicalization.
I hope this helps!

RE: Community Discussion - What old-school SEO tactics no longer work? Which ones still do?
Hi,
I think keyword density is quite outdated. I've seen many people asking on Quora about optimal keyword density. I think this no longer applies. In fact, Matt Cutts has targeted this question like 5-6 years ago (here is a video), but, I still see a lot of folks trying to stuff their keywords everywhere. Hence, I think this point was missing on the latest WB Friday. However, I totally agree with other points mentioned.
-
RE: Need help with my "ghost" blog...
Hi,
I did a quick check, your website is indexed by Google and you don't seem to have nofollow/noindex issues nor robots.txt issue with your Home Page. However, I can see that you are using noindex tags on some other pages like life, style and health. This may be the cause.
Also, I can see that your website isn't really optimised, that includes page titles (they are too short and don't target specific keywords), some pages have very short meta descriptions and is missing on some pages, you have multiple H1 on some pages, etc.
Also, I can't see Google Analytics set-up on this new website. Did you or your developer put 301 redirect from the old site to the new one?
I would advise you to remove noindex tags, configure your GA, optimise your site internally and you should be good to go.
Please read Moz's beginners guide to SEO
I hope this helps!

RE: Tens of thousands of links to less than 10 pages from 1 domain
Hi,
This is strange that sponsored ads have follow links, they should be nofollow, as ads should not directly affect you organic search. In your case they actually might, therefore, I would suggest to review the ad website and maybe consider moving somewhere else (as you said, it doesn't convert well).
Also, if we think about it, Google actually may consider your ads as buying links or as unnatural link building.

RE: Will we be penalised for duplicate content on a sub-domain?
Hi,
I would try to avoid duplicate content as much as I can but, there is no such a thing as "duplicate content" penalty unless all of your content is simply copied from elsewhere. I would try and use rel=canonical tags to tell Google that this piece of content is the original one.
Please watch this WB Friday: https://moz.com/blog/guest-blogging-content-licensing-without-duplicate-content-issues-whiteboard-friday

RE: Error Code 804: HTTPS (SSL) Error Encountered
Hi,
I had the same issue with my website. As Dirk said, there is an issue with Moz crawling websites that use SNI.
But, double check that with Moz Support team to see whether it is a problem with Moz and not your site.
-
RE: Got Google Manual penalty full Spam on my website
I agree with Dirk. Most of your content is copied from elsewhere. Also, your links do not look right and mainly from commenting on other articles. You have plenty of links, so it would be quite challenging to clean them up.
But if you want to be considered for re-indexation, you need to rethink the way you do SEO. Clean up your links, use disavow tool for links that you can't remove yourself. Also, your content needs to be original. When you feel like you've done everything you could, file Google reconsideration.

RE: Keywords in URL: sub-directory or single layer keywords?
Hi,
I would suggest using the first option (/christmas/decor). Google and other search engines would understand that "decor" page is about Christmas Decor, as you are using "christmas" subfolder as a parent of "decor" page.
Hope this helps!

Server Connection Error when using Google Speed Test Insight and GTMetrix
Hi Guys,
Recently got into the issue when testing load speed of my website (https://solvid.co.uk). Occasionally, Google Speed Insights gives me a server connection error which states _"PageSpeed was unable to connect to the server. Ensure that you are using the correct protocol (_http vs https), the page loads in a browser, and is accessible on the public internet."
Also, GTMetrix gives me an error as well, which states the following: "An error occurred fetching the page: HTTPS error: SSl connect attempt failed"
All of my redirects seem to be set-up correctly as well as the SSL certificate. I've contacted my hosting provider (godaddy), they are saying that everything is fine with the server and the installation. Also, tried in different browsers in incognito mode, still gives me the same error.
Until yesterday I haven't had such a problem. I've also attached the error screenshot links.
I would really appreciate your help!

RE: Search traffic hit after switching magazine to subdomain
Hi,
I think what might be causing the traffic drop is the fact that you have moved your library to a submain as oppose to keeping it under the root domain.
Have a look at this whiteboard Friday. https://moz.com/blog/subdomains-vs-subfolders-rel-canonical-vs-301-how-to-structure-links-optimally-for-seo-whiteboard-friday
This should give you some heads up.

RE: New page not being picked up
Okay, I can see that you are disallowing: /locations/montreal/. This what might be causing the issue. I think you should ask your developer to review the technical side of your website.
-
RE: New page not being picked up
Hi Karim,
I can see that you are disallowing a lot of things in your robots.txt file. Have you checked your robots.txt and meta robots? When you say it's not being picked up, do you mean it's not indexed by Google or it just doesn't rank well?
Thanks,

RE: Why are http and https pages showing different domain/page authorities?
Hi,
It seems like Google might be treating http and https as 2 different websites. Have you specified the preffered website version in your Search Console?

RE: How to use the Basic SERP to figure out what keywords to target
Hi,
It's quite challenging to give any heads up as we don't know what your business is about and what do you sell/provide.
Google Keyword Planner can give you a solid understanding of the search volume and competitiveness of specific keywords. You can also use MOZs keyword difficulty tool which also specifiles the competitiveness of a specific keyword.
I think you should target keywords that are most relevant to your business as oppose to "most searched" keywords. As your website is new, it will be super challenging to rank for high volume keywords, therefore, you should focus more on long tail keywords that are highly relevant to your business.
Hope this help!

RE: Homepage outranking subpage for main keyword, but subpage is more optimized for the keyword.
I agree with Patrick.
I personally think that search engines simply prioritise your homepage over the subpages, as a result of higher PA, Links and so forth.
Also, you said that this is a new page, was your homepage ranking for that keyword before you've added the new page? What I think, is that the new page contributes to the ranking of the homepage, as it hasn't got enough ranking signals (e.g. backlinks) on its own.
I might be wrong.
It will be helpful if you can maybe post the link to the website.

RE: How Do You Know or Find Out if You've been hit by a Google Penalty?
Hi there,
For manual penalty, please check your search console under manual actions tab.
For algorithm penalty, you may notice huge drop in traffic and rankings, and may not rank for your brand name

RE: How Important is it to Use Keywords in the URL
I've just checked your website, and it does look fine to me. You have a clear navigation and all of that. I wouldn't worry about changing URLs (Google would still index them) But just double check with search console if Google has indexed all of your pages.
In regards to the seagrass.html vs seagrass-furniture.html, I wouldn't worry about changing it, because Google understands that your website is about selling furniture, therefore it realises that seagrass.html has to do with furniture. When you change your pages and put 301 redirects you loose a bit of link juice, so if I were you I wouldn't worry too much about your URL situation (it's a minor ranking factor) and would focus on link building and on-site optimisation.
Hioe that helps

RE: Minimize risk with links
Can you possibly post the link of your website so we can have a look at your link profile and spam score.
In regards to the links, there are many factors to consider. I'll tell you a few (what I think is a good practise for link building). First of all, don't purchase links (although Google doesn't really know if you've paid money or not). Try to get links from relevant websites to your own business, high authority websites with high Domain Authority, relevant publications and so forth. Avoid spammy websites (you can use Moz Bar to identify those) and keep the good balance between Dofollow and Nofollow links.
Check out the Moz Blog and Rand's whiteboard Friday for more detailed response, you can learn a lot from those guys.

RE: New website content before or after new webdesign launch?
Hi,
Are you launching completely new website or just changing the design of the current website? If you are just changing the design, then you can post the new content and then re-design the website (as long as your re-design would not interfere with the content). Are you planing to keep the website live while re-designing?

RE: How Important is it to Use Keywords in the URL
Hi,
I would say that it is beneficial to have a clear architecture/structure for users and search engine spiders to navigate across your website. If you'd decide to change the structure, I would suggest using something like this: www.yourwebsite.com/chairs/seagrass-chair/.
When you say that you have a "chair" page, does that mean that all of your products are listed on that single page or do you have separate products pages?

RE: Backlinks not showing on Open Site Explorer's Just-Discovered Links
Hi Edgar,
Open Site Explorer is not always 100% accurate, as well as other platforms (e.g. SEM Rush, Majestic, SimilarWeb and so forth). Furthermore, it does take time for links to appear on Open Site Explorer. I personally see Open Site Explorer as a great comparison/link opportunity tool, which allows you to see rough figures.
You can always use Google Search Console to see links that point to your site.
Thanks,

RE: Ranking and Indexing Issue
Hi Mike,
I would suggest you add both versions of your website to the search console (i.e. www and non-www) and then set your preference to whichever you like, so that Google knows which one your prefer to be the main domain.
I would also suggest shortening the URL, because it does look too long. Maybe you'd want to put the author of the quote instead of the actual quote or shorten the quote somehow. I'm pretty sure that you guys may publish some quotes with even more characters in the future which is going to be even longer than the existing one. Hence, I would rethink the URL structure.
In regards to the rankings, don't worry just now as it really takes several weeks to get updated.
Many Thanks,
Dima

RE: Ranking and Indexing Issue
Hi,
That a is pretty long-tail keywords there.
How long ago did you guys optimise your pages/website? If it is just few day, don't panic. Google may take several weeks to identify the change on your website and rank it appropriately. Do you guys have a search console account set up? If not, set one up and submit your sitemap with all the new pages (it may help Google to identify those pages quicker).
Also, I can see that your home page title is: "A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life." Are you trying to rank for this specific quote or for keywords like "inspirational quotes" etc.? Page title is one of the important factors for Google to identify the relevance of the website.
I think your Meta Description is too short, you might want to extend it a little bit. Also, I couldn't see any H1 and your image aren't optimised (Google doesn't read images so it is important that your alt text to describe the image). Maybe add some more content to our website as well.
I would suggest going through your pages again, and then submit a sitemap to search console.
Hope that helps.
Dima

RE: Search engine submission - Urgent
I would agree with Dirk. There is not much to rank for on your website, all of your content comes from amazon.
Still, another questions is why is it not indexed yet. The website is built on Wordpress and if you haven't touched your robots.txt then it should not block crawlers. As I can see you are not ranking for your exact match domain name (i.e. site: yourdomain.com) which can be sign of a manual penalty.
What I would suggest is to add some content, do some internal optimisation (download seo Yoast plugin), add Titles, H1, optimise images and so forth. Then, create a separate search console account and submit your sitemap and see if it works.
-
RE: Spammy links
Hi,
I agree with the guys. As soon as the website gets popular, authoritative and valuable, other websites tend to simply copy stuff that you produce, including whole paragraphs of content and sometimes they don't even bother removing the links from the content.
Try to disavow as many as you can, but don't spend all of your time on it. As Dmitrii said, it is important to keep your spam score low. Hence, try to focus on building quality links that will easily outweight spammy ones.
Thanks,
-
RE: Competitors link building surely link farming ? but no punishment?
Hi Shauni,
Have you analysed where those links are coming from? Do they look spammy and unrelated? If so, don't worry, they will be penalised soon. Google may take some time to discover the nature of "link building" methods of your competitors.
Many Thanks,
-
RE: Would this be classed as a dodgy backlinking? - Important
I can't see content creation on the list (that is what you really want to target) and marketing that content. Obviously, there many many many more aspects to implement on-site and off-site when doing SEO.
With those you have listed I would be careful and wouldn't overuse them.

RE: Wix platform
Hi Steve,
Yes, that's a common issue with WIX platform. The #! is a part of AJAX Technology and unfortunately can not be removed from your url. _"You can use 301 redirect to create custom URLs for the purpose of sharing your website pages". _Here is a full answer from WIX regarding this issue:
WIX had an update recently, which I think was mainly targeted towards SEO, as they've included more features and most importantly explanations (e.g. the process of submitting sitemap, clear 301 redirect procedure).
What I also noticed with WIX is that websites have multiple versions of a homepage (e.g. www.yourdomain.com/default.php loads and does not redirect to the main url nor gives the 404).
Regarding tips for ranking, head over to MOZ blog/learn.
