I would have to agree. If you keep to a single domain, you don't have to spread your budget and effort out between other domains. Any piece of content you create can then, possibly, influence your entire domain.

RE: Installing WordPress on a site OR just adding a blog page on the site - Which one is better and why ?
Hi Vikas_Rana
This will depend on who is going to be managing the site. Installing Wordpress throughout your domain is ideal because everything is there already. All the tools and plugins are available in a heart beat.
Some admins prefer to use pure HTML websites because they can customize it according to how they want it, but it does require a little more effort and development ability.

RE: How to devide Google traffic into local google traffic (.com , .uk , .cn etc) in Analytics
I'm sorry, I wish I could help with that but I have never seen these stats available on Google analytics

RE: How to devide Google traffic into local google traffic (.com , .uk , .cn etc) in Analytics
Hi Boson
If you go to Overview > Demographics > Location and then choose the "Source" as your secondary dimension, you will be able to see which search traffic is from which country. I'm not sure how to tell which search engine they were using but more than likely they will be using their local one.
I hope this helps

RE: Are on-page optimization tools becoming outdated?
I'm referring to on-page checkers that our clients are using to check for themselves (including SEOmoz's one), and it gets very difficult to explain to them why the tool isn't the most accurate. In the end it looks like we're not doing our job.
-
Are on-page optimization tools becoming outdated?
So from what I've noticed, Google is using a lot of semantics in their algorithm. When it comes to using a tool to determine on-page, keyword/phrase factors, most on-page optimization tools check exact matches and give you a rating and suggestion based on that. What about synonyms and "natural", related terms?
My question is, are these tools becoming more inaccurate by not using semantic/synonym checks?

RE: CDN Servers
Thanks for your reply. That makes a lot of sense. Had various people telling me conflicting things.

CDN Servers
Will using CDN servers, where your website is synced (cached?) across multiple servers, have an effect on the SEO of your domain?

RE: A backlinks question
The anchor text from your link profile, will never penalize you. It might not be as great as a keyword based anchor text but it doesn't have a negative impact. On the other side, if you have 80% of your link's anchor text saying "blue 1980 aged cheese", Google will see that something's not right and you will not get the value that you would from a natural link profile.
If the links are genuine and are inbound from genuine websites and not link farms or spam sites, you should be fine. Penguin is about penalizing black hat tactics, for example, buying links from link farms.

RE: Duplicate Website.. Please Help!
If the new products are going live, on the duplicate site, as soon as you upload them, then you might have someone who has access your product database or has hacked into it. I cannot see any other reason as to how this is happening.
-
RE: Duplicate Website.. Please Help!
It could take up to a few months. Google need to manually moderate the links. I'm sure there are plenty people who are doing the same thing.

RE: Tactics to Influence Keywords in Google's "Search Suggest" / Autocomplete in Instant?
There was a very clever Adwords campaign by Converse. Used Adwords very intelligently.

RE: Duplicate Website.. Please Help!
The best way to go about it, is to contact Google and let them know that your site has been duplicated. Google usually chooses the website that has been indexed first but I'm not 100% sure about that. They also take into consideration which website is more active and updates content more often.
If you are concerned about the links that are coming in, you should try to contact the webmasters of those domains and request link removals or no-follow attributes added to links. If they do not reply or refuse to remove the links, you can use the Disavow Tool. But this should only be done as a last resort.

RE: Does creating a Facebook App help your social SEO factors?
Social Signals are a factor in SEO but I believe it would be more beneficial for you to focus on creating the best possible usability for your app which in turn will get you the natural likes and shares you need.
Social Signals are very helpful for trending topics. We did an experiment with Social Signals and found that they do push up your rankings but only for a short period of time.

RE: Account access
Unfortunately it doesn't seem like there is that option
Just keep in mind SEOmoz's terms of services in case you're thinking along these lines:
"Your login may only be used by one person – a single login shared by multiple people is not permitted."

RE: Merging two websites to one...
That makes sense. Good luck!

RE: Merging two websites to one...
This can be a tricky move. You are correct in saying that you should create 2 separate folders for each branch but try to make sure you keep your localized keywords for each branch.
If you are going to be using the domain of your stronger branch, you will most probably be moving the current content to new pages and folders (From website.com/ to website.com/branch1) so you will most likely see a drop in ranking until the new pages start gaining authority. You are basically starting over except your domain will still have some of it's authority.
301 redirecting a page/domain won't transfer any authority.
-
RE: Should we consider redirecting a high ranking subdomain page to our homepage?
Redirecting your studio to your home page wouldn't help your home page at all. The authority is on the actual studio.html page and if you are redirected from it, no one (including Google's crawler) can see it anyway.
The other problem you are going to have is how are your visitors going to use the studio if they are being redirected from it each time?
Remember there is no way to "trick" Google into believing one page is better than it actually is. You need to concentrate on keeping a great usability throughout your website, especially with the latest panda updates.

RE: Long URL Warning
Long URL's aren't always a bad thing. It's generally bad only because users are turned off by long URL's.
-
RE: Google Analytics "Undetermined" Keyword
I think he is saying that there is a new one, aside from (not provided), called "undetermined"
-
RE: Homepage not showing for searches
You definitely have a point. Deeper page content is much better than home page content.
-
RE: Long URL Warning
Not the Titles but the URL needs to describe the page in as few words as possible.
instead of /5414668-women-s-invicta-swiss-16-diamonds-two-tone-mother-of-pearl-dial.html aim for something like** **/invicta-mother-of-pearl-dial.html
It also depends on what keywords you are aiming for this page. If it's "Woman's Invicta Swiss Watch" then you need to use that.
-
RE: Long URL Warning
Maybe on the shorter keywords where you have 1 or 2 in the URL but when you try and use invictamotherofpearldial as an extension, it can get very ambiguous. Google will probably figure it out if the Title tag is says "invicta mother of pearl dial" but I believe it is very unprofessional to have a URL that people battle to read.
If I saw **/**invictamotherofpearldial.html, I wouldn't know what that is but if the URL had **/**invicta-mother-of-pearl-dial.html, I can make a much better assumption of what the page is about. Google will see this as a usability issue.

RE: Long URL Warning
@Mat
Remember the dashes or underscores are used to determine individual words by search engines. An example would be:
www.website.com/ceramictilesealant (X)
vs
www.website.com/ceramic-tile-sealant (Y)
Domain X wouldn't nessecarily gain any authority for "Ceramic Tile Sealant" in the URL but domain Y would definitely.

RE: Review Functionality Plugins for eCommerce. Which are the best and most cost effective?
What CMS system are you using? There could be plugins for that specific CMS.
There are a few free but basic review widgets like Good Reads. It really depends what kind of reviewing you would like (star rating, text snippets, etc). They are also not that hard to develop if you know a developer.
-
RE: Search result pages - noindex but auto follow?
Yes, the default action is to follow unless specified otherwise
-
RE: Homepage not showing for searches
Domain Age is also a factor that Google uses. So it's probably because it is a new domain and it needs to "age" a bit. Your old domain was probably older and had a bit more authority than your new domain.
-
RE: Long URL Warning
I'm not too familiar with Prestashop but as Mat has mentioned below, there should be an option to edit the URL of each page, and there is probably modules that have been created in order to do this on a larger scale.
If you follow the article I linked to in my first reply, you will see that you have to log into your admin panel -> go to preferences -> SEO & URL's
Then you can set your rewritten URL there. Try to make it shorter and SEO friendly.

RE: Homepage not showing for searches
It doesn't matter where you are building links. Links aren't the only factor that Google uses to determine relevancy. If one of your inner pages has more keyword prominence for "Financial Wise", then Google will see that this page will provide it's users' with better, more relevant information about Financial Wise, than the home page.
Let's put ourselves in the searchers shoes again... I'm looking for a Mortgage Advisor in the West Lothian area. My first choice will be in Google places because I am looking for a physical business in the area. So Google shows me the areas first.
Now lets say I am looking for actual Mortgage Advice online. If you had optimized your home page to give me advice and your website is the "advisor", then your home page would probably be showing in the pure SERP and not Google Places.
I really hope this makes sense.
P.S If you add "in" to your phrase (Mortgage Advisors in West Lothian) you will see that your home page is ranked because you used the exact keyword.
-
RE: Homepage not showing for searches
The keyword "Mortgage Advisors in West Lothian" is ranking your home page though. I don't see the problem.
Which keywords are the ones that are going to your "inner" pages?
-
RE: Homepage not showing for searches
Unless you have a very popular brand, you shouldn't be focusing on your brand name (financial wise). You should focus on the services and products you provide like "Mortgage Advisors".
When you put yourself in a searchers shoes, you wouldn't search for Financial Wise. You would probably be looking for "Financial Advice" (blog article?) or "Mortgage Advisors".
The old way of doing SEO is over. You need to cater for your visitors. Ask yourself, "Is this page the kind of content I would be looking for if I searched fro this keyword?". If not then create it into one.
-
RE: Homepage not showing for searches
If you haven't done so already, you need to create a 301 redirect from the old domain to the new one.
Google wants to find the most relevant pages to show it's users so those "inner" pages you are seeing are probably the most relevant for the keyword/phrase. It's not a bad thing at all, so don't stress over it.
-
RE: Subdomains
In my experience, sub-domains are viewed as a "new" website in Google's eyes (to a point). You still inherit domain authority but not as much as a new page would (www.bharatdesi.com/hyderabad).
-
RE: Long URL Warning
Google is probably referencing your dynamic URL's in Prestashop. Dynamic URL's can change at any time thus Google cannot index a page properly if the URL changes. This can also cause problems when you need to redirect pages.
Because your site is an ecommerce site, you are most likely going to have quite a few dynamic URL's.
Another downside about having these URL's is that users are less likely to click through to a dynamic URL.
as for creating shorter URL's, here is an article I found on SEO friendly URL's for Prestashop.
