From what I have seen, yes keywords in drop down menus count. It is searchable text. However, the search engines are more sophisticated and can count in-content and out-of-content keywords. I don't believe you should worry about it. But it is always worth testing. Do you currently rank for that keyword?

Should we be concerned with the TLD .XXX?
Should brands be concerned with registering or blocking the .XXX TLDs? Should individuals care about .XXX registration? Will links from .XXX be helpful? Will a 301 redirect from a .XXX be harmful?
Bonus Question added:
Should .XXX's show up in safe search results?

RE: Should me URLs be uppercase or lowercase
Is the Short Title a redirect or the actual URL? If it's a redirect then it shouldn't be a problem. You can also use canonical if you want to use the lowercase and host the other page. But that's is a sloppy solution.

RE: Should me URLs be uppercase or lowercase
I agree. Lowercase in the example above. For ease of direct typing.
But when advertising just a website URL in print offline, caps. www.BulwarkPestControl.com is easier to read than www.bulwarkpestcontrol.com.

RE: SEO Ranking & Brand Names
My experience with competing for my own brand name against myself....
Bulwarkpest.com was the established authority and brand for Bulwark Exterminating and Bulwark Pest Control. Time had come for a major site overhaul. We revamped the site and decided to go with the longer domain, bulwarkpestcontrol.com. No matter how hard I tried I could not dethrone bulwarkpest.com. Traffic on bulwarkpestcontrol.com was 10x that of bulwarkpest.com. More links, better SEO, more pages, I even threw PPC into the mix. The only way I was able to beat my own domain was to 301 bulwarkpest.com to bulwarkpestcontrol.com. I took it back out of the 301 out of curiosity, but the new ranking domain, www.bulwarkpestcontrol.com, stayed on top.
Once you have achieved that glorious position of "brand" or authority for a search, it is near impossible to dethrone it.
Even if you were to beat the algorithm, if your site ever got a human evaluation, which google does do on a regular bases, you would be dethroned because searchers want to find the brand website when searching for a brand.

RE: Google Places Account Suspended
@mike is right, they recently updated places and this might just be an error. All of our listings were pending a couple of weeks ago, but they came back.
However, Google does specifically say that they prefer an email address from the domain associated with the places page. It may be best to do this now rather than later.

RE: Strange Refferral URL coming in from Google
Are you a local based company? Do you rank in the maps?
-
RE: If we are getting clicks from a local one box as a citation in the serps's would we see this as the referrer in GA?
Not to my knowledge.
Google analytics seems to keep this as a search referral. You can find traffic from maps, but that is specific to maps.google.com
Webmaster tools certainly tracks it as a search placement.

RE: Getting a citation page indexed
If you are looking for better google places rankings then you can build citations on social media profiles.

RE: Facebook Reach from 1,200 to less than 20 in 24 hours?
Ouch... No. Pest control isn't that sexy.
-
RE: Facebook Reach from 1,200 to less than 20 in 24 hours?
I am using the sponsored stories so... maybe my influencers un-liked us, but my likes are still showing the same.

RE: Facebook Reach from 1,200 to less than 20 in 24 hours?
BTW.. when did you make guru status? Very nice. Congrats.
-
RE: Facebook Reach from 1,200 to less than 20 in 24 hours?
Absolutely sure. I even tried upping the miles around the city to see if I could grab a larger audience.
-
RE: Facebook Reach from 1,200 to less than 20 in 24 hours?
The difference happened after 24 hours. So I ran it yesterday for a time block. Was going to run it today for the same time block. The ad reached 248 people. The next day... the audience is too small.
Could it be that the audience X the ad? Is there a way of knowing when this happens?
Just tried again and the count is still down to 20 people.
-
Facebook Reach from 1,200 to less than 20 in 24 hours?
I created ad #1 in facebook ran it for a marked time frame. Target audience 1200. Reached 248.
Created ad #2. Wanted to test it against ad #1 for same audience, but now Facebook says the target audience is less than 20 people. Huh?
Facebook can't be loosing people that fast.
Why would this happen? Is it simply a glitch?

RE: Duplicate Content across 4 domains
Wow... so many options. It is really hard to give a good answer without knowing what the domains are and the differences in the domain names themselves, but here are a few thoughts.
If the domains provide some distinct differences, whether that be target audience (grandmaroadbikes.com) or branding (ZippzRoadBikes.com) then I would start with the cross domain canonical tags. There are many sites that stand on their own while using cross-domain canonicals and maintaining their own brand.
How similar are the domain names? If the domains are too similar, and unique branding can not really be achieved, then I would consider the consolidation. My gut reaction as an advertiser is to stick with the easiest to say and type. I assume the domain being marketed offline wins that prize. I would focus on promoting that domain. Further, many people will loose a bit of trust if they type in www.AdvertisedDomain.com and get www.DomainUnAdvertised.com. Plus you don't want to cause brand confusion.

RE: How? Title in Google differs than actual title tag
Perhaps its some SEO testing.
"Let's create a new page, use a robot txt file to block the bot, and then spam a 100k new links to page."
"That's crazy enough that it just might work."
-
RE: How? Title in Google differs than actual title tag
well if you get dumped by Twitter then pick up on JCPenny!
It's pretty amazing that this page is ranking at all.
-
RE: How? Title in Google differs than actual title tag
I am with you on that one.
-
RE: How? Title in Google differs than actual title tag
Per James Zolman... "when it's robots txt'd out: http://jcp.is/ppWTXU - G assume title via external link anchor txt imo".

For traffic sent by the search engines, how much personalization/customization is allowed on a page if any?
If I want to better target my audience so I would like to be able to address the exact query string coming from the search engine. I'd also like to add relevant sections to the site based in the geo area they live in.
- Can I customize a small portion of the page to fit my visitors search query and geo area per the IP address?
- How much can I change a web page to better fit a user and still be within the search engine's guidelines?

RE: Img before or after h1 tag?
Bots can burn through script... I don't think an extra line is really a speed bump.
.. but yes... always fun to test things.
-
RE: URL Structure "-" vs "/"? Are there any advantages to one over the other?
the /keyword/ tells the search engine that you have a folder, the other does not. If your Keyword1 has a lot of sub/related keywords then creating a folder would be helpful. Google does search the index files of your folders... without being prompted to.
If you don't have a legit sub category then I would stick with the -.
-
RE: Img before or after h1 tag?
I really don't think it will make that much of a difference. I think the real tipping point in image optimization, other than content of the webpage, is the title and alt tags. So your example should be
But if I had to guess... The images relevancy is probably most closely associated with the surrounding text. So I would error on the side of putting it after the H1.
-
RE: Img before or after h1 tag?
I think that's a great idea Heather. When can we expect that report?
-
RE: Local hosts for sites in foreign countries?
Perhaps its superstition, but most site owners that I know prefer to host sites in the region of their TLD. It seems that this could be a trust factor from Google.

RE: SEO Certification + SEO Experience = Ideal SEO Consultant ???
I got a SEO certificate a couple of years ago.. Very official looking paper and all!.. and then my kids got to it and colored on it. Looks much better!

RE: Switching to a domain name with keywords in it, is it possible to make this happen smoothly?
We transferred from Bulwarkpest.com to Bulwarkpestcontrol.com to get the keyword match. But we were not really risking much as there was very little SEO effort put into bulwarkpest.com. Worked well for us, but you will most likely see a drop while the search engines test your new site to see if the new site is relevant. If you have an off season then you may want to test this then. If the redirect doesn't benefit you then you should be able to regain positions by simply going back to the original domain.
However, you may want to look more into 'brand building" Orkin ranks just fine for pest control without it being in their domain name.

RE: One client, one b2b site and one b2c site - linking relationship
Search engines understand footer links and therefore the total value of a footer link is greatly diminished. Per a Bing rep, if a footer link exists and is relevant then the value is 1 link from that site, not 10,000. So I don't believe you will get as big of a bump as you might believe.
However, I do believe that cross linking your domains is not a bad practice. We host our blog on a separate site and link back and forth. It only seems to help us and not hurt us.
But you do run a risk of looking manipulative and therefore being penalized. I would suggest testing one link in the footer. See if it gives you a bump or gets penalized. If you get a bump, keep it. If you get dinged. Get rid of it.

RE: Is use of javascript to simplify information architecture considered cloaking?
I have to agree with Ryan. Yes it's cloaking. ... And if you get caught, you could and most likely would be penalized.

RE: Two spelling of a domain
As long as your redirect is working then it doesn't create a problem for the bots. They can read the 301 redirect.
.....Now if you want to confuse the bots a bit then use a 302. And then turn the site on and off at leisure. Kidding...
-
RE: What to do with domain?
Go for it. I've seen 301s help. Direct it to the most appropriate page on your site. You may also want to match up some of the old content and redirect those specific pages to the main site as well. But overall, a simple 301 redirect to a relevant site works wonders.
You may also want to take note of rankings and keyword traffic that the site you are redirecting is currently getting. Monitor the success of the main site in keeping those rankings and the traffic on a keyword base. That will tell you how successful the redirect will be in the long run.

How long has the rewrite been up? You can try this page: http://www.ragepank.com/redirect-check/

RE: Should we create separate product descriptions for our customers' web sites?
Are you beating the reseller sites for those products? If you are the established authority and are beating the resellers then you have little reason to change. If you are not beating the resellers then yes you should create unique product descriptions and images for your main site. You would also do well to get some customer reviews on your site and to use the schema.org mark up for the reviews.

RE: Legit Domain Masking
I don't see any real SEO value out of doing domain masking. I do see SEM value but I think you'd be better off re-creating some of the content for your vanity domains. That way you can rank both of them. Otherwise, using a rel=canonical will only get the main domain ranked.

RE: Switching Hosting & SEO
I've never moved a large site, but our little pest control site didn't have any negative effects when we moved it. Same thing, we needed a little more growth flexibility. I think the search engines understand that sites need to move or add IPs.

RE: One page wordpress site - what are the steps for SEO
I would start like this...
Match the domain as follows: www.EactMatchKeyword.com
- Page Title: Exact Match Keyword ....<add other=""></add>
- Page Description: Exact Match Keyword ... < and descripstion >
- Blog Title: Exact Match Keyword
- Blog Description: <get your="">Keyword Exact Match</get>
- H1- Exact Match Keyword
- Content begins with Exact Match Keyword... content
- Related Key Words in content
That should do it. Try it and see if it sticks.
Adding a contact us page, a site map, and a Terms of Service page are recommended.

RE: Is blocking RSS Feeds with robots.txt necessary?
If google says not to block it then don't block it. They may not index the RSS but they can still crawl the RSS.

Any ideas on how Google +1 handles URLs and canonicals?
If your URL string shows up in a search and they +1 the URL with the coding in it will the +1 transfer to the canonical page?
Example: site.com/locations/arizona/?utm_source=go gets a Google +1 from a user. The page itself has a canonical for site.com/locations/arizona/
Does google credit the canonical with the +1 or do they then have dup pages with separate +1 scores?

RE: Double Listing
Ryan's advice is solid. The only reason I believe that double listings would legitimately appear is because your site has overlapping categories. Like "widgets" and "blue widgets". Your secondary category my pull enough rank to graduate to the first page. In your case, your home page and store front could overlap. Like "Widgets" and "Buy Widgets". If your content is unique enough then you should be fine.

RE: Yahoo Webmaster Tools still work?
Yahoo what????
Their official statement was that Bing would be providing the search results and that Yahoo would retain all of their other properties. Local search is still separate. Yahoo answers is still separate. Flickr... etc. So whatever webmaster tools yahoo has should remain yahoos.Yahoo site explorer is still active and it appears to be working fine. But they have said that it will be going away.
But I would just worry about Bing's Tool as they provide the Yahoo and Bing search results.

RE: Blog - on the domain or place on separate site, now that Panda ranks for bounce, TOP, depth of visit
Sorry. Didn't mean anything by that. Lesser quality didn't mean poor quality. YOUmoz has great content. The main blog has even better content. And there are exceptions to every rule.
