Any ideas?
-
Hi there. We've been working on this site for a few months now - http://www.gear-zone.co.uk/.
We were hired as the previous agency was seeing traffic fall by 40% year on year consistently. Now, we've managed to stop that drop, but traffic recovery in Google (Bing and Yahoo are fine) is being really sluggish. Here's what we've done:
Converted URLs from dynamic to static
Sorted duplicate content errors
Cut down the number of on-page links (Still not under a hundred, but that's really tricky)
Carried out on-page optimisation on hundreds of inner pages, including adding new content
Does anybody have any ideas on anything we cou;d be missing? We're just starting to get going on link building, so that's the next step.
Thanks!

You are correct Brian and I have updated my original response.
The primary remaining advantage is any Google AdWords advertisements stand out more as they display the Google Checkout logo.

Google Checkout allows any fees you pay for payment processing to be credited to your AdWords account, so if you use AdWords you basically get free payment processing.
Hmm.. thought they no longer did this? Can new users still set this up?

A few recommendations for the home page:
1. Fix the copyright date in the footer. Don't hard-code the date. Use php to present the current two digit year in the format 2010-11.
2. Allow users to login via social networks: twitter, facebook, google, msn, etc. Place the icons next to the "login" option.
3. Add more social networks. You currently offer twitter. Add facebook and google+ to your home page.
4. Add more social networks to your product pages too. I noticed you offer fb Like's next to each product which is excellent. Add twitter and google+ there as well.
5. Add trust symbols. Versign, TRUSTe, BBB, MasterCard SecureCode, Verified by Visa, etc. Take a look at the bottom of the vzw.com page. I like my sites to have a similar look to their trust area. If you are on a limited budget, skip TRUSTe as they are way overpriced. All other trust symbols are about $375 each for unlimited views. TRUSTe is $500 for 100 views and $1000 for 500 views. It is definitely worth it for any large e-commerce site but smaller ones may wish to skip it.
6. If your URLs are ever changed, drop the ".html" or any other tech extensions. The remaining URL is short, looks nicer and will not need to be changed due to changes such as moving from html to php pages.
7. Along the same lines as #6, your current pages contain an extra id information which you may wish to consider removing. An example URL is: http://www.gear-zone.co.uk/sports-tcid19.html. The URL would look much cleaner as http://www.gear-zone.co.uk/sports
8. Consider accepting PayPal and Google Checkout as payment methods. PayPal is the world's largest online payment processor. Google Checkout allows any fees you pay for payment processing to be credited to your AdWords account, so if you use AdWords you basically get free payment processing.
While there is no evidence to support Google gives any direct ranking boosts to sites which use Google Checkout, I believe there are some indirect boosts because it benefits Google directly and because they know more about those sites and can trust them to a higher degree.
Good luck!

Moving multiple Sites to One Site and SEO Impact/Ideas
Hi there, We are in the process of moving 2 sites with higher page authority to another site we own (that is our company brand), so essentially 3 sites into one. We're at risk of losing a lot of SEO from the original 2 sites that have all the product information. We are doing this since we merged companies a couple years back and need one web precense. Anyhow, the site launch date is in 3 months and the recommendation is to start moving content over prior to that for top pages, which is a big undertaking when we are launching all the pages again with new content, redeisgn and moving sites in 3 months. If it's the right move, we should do it, but I just wanted to get opinions on how others have handled something similiar when moving to a site with lower site authority and trying not to lose rankings.

Geo-Redirect: good idea or not?
Hi Mozzers, The background: I have this very corporate .com domain which is used worldwide. Next to that, we have another .com domain which is specifically created for the US visitors. Within the organic rankings, we notice that our corporate domain is ranking much better in the US. Many visitors are arriving on this domain. As it is a corporate domain being used worldwide, they get lost. My questions: I know there are ways to redirect by location. Would it be smart to automatically redirect US visitors for the corporate domain to the commercial US-specific domain? Is it possible to only redirect US visitors and leave the website as it is for visitors from other countries. Won't this harm the corporate website (organically) worldwide? If this would be a good idea, any recommended plugins or concrete procedures? Thank you so much for helping me out!

SEO before Replatforming - Good Idea?
Hello, We are in the midst of a major replatforming of our current website, the process will take roughly six to nine more months to complete. We are completing revamping our site - the new site will be on the same domain, but almost everything is changing - from the category structure, hierarchy, architecture, different regions on separate URLs will not be on the same with a currency converter, URLs - you name it, we're changing it. There has been internal discussions for some time on whether we should hire an outside firm to help us with our SEO. I have a lot of experience in SEO but my role has changed recently and we have had trouble filling my previous role. We are not looking for help with the replatforming project, we have a great plan in place to preserve link equity, tags, etc. We are looking for general SEO help as if replatforming wasn't on the table. My question is, is this smart to do before replatforming? In my opinion, it's not. Our new site will have completely different URLs and will be so dramatically different. We could have someone do some keyword research, but we have already done the bulk of it. We have thought about and researched keywords for every new page we are creating. But from a technical SEO perspective, I don't see the point in getting someone. In addition, we just had a major SEO audit done last year and we completed the tasks from that audit on the current site; however, most of the changes were technical, not content based. Thoughts?

Is it a bad idea to use our meta description as a short description of a product on that product page?
Does this count as duplicating content even though the meta description has no effect on search results?

Microsite campaign good or bad idea for SERP
I have a group of microsites for renters insurance, mostly geo long-tails. I wrote some content and have a GREAT back-end through Kemper. First 4 weeks they all did great. It looks like Panda went through on June 25 and by the 27'th they got moved totally out of the SERP. I have 67 microsites. All have unique contact (about us, why us, benefits...). I post to them often; not all of them but i put up about 10 new posts / week. Havent done much SEO, no link building or anything that could be spammy or causeing trouble. I have them in webmaster tools and no messages about problems. If i've been penalized or if something is seriously wrong i'd like to know. I know that Google can see 67 websites all on 1 ip but i'm not trying to fool or trick Gbot so not interested in using proxies or specialty hosts with many ip's.If there is no critical flaw, next i'm just going to continue writing content, buy traffic, and build quality backlinks. Your comments are appreciated. Not one site is in top 1000 as far as i can see, and all were in top 30 by week 4. Banned on week 5, today is week 12.http://onlinerentersinsurance.orgIf you want to see the other 66, click on the 'renters insurance' link on the right. Its a random link through the micronetwork.

Good idea to point all registered domains to main site?
We have close to 60 domains that we are considering pointing to our main site. Is this type of a redirect a good idea? We have a number of domains that are industry related but do not have our brand name in the domain. Should we point these sites to our homepage as well? Pros/Cons? Examples: <colgroup><col width="201"></colgroup> XXXXX.BE XXXXX.BIZ XXXXX.BZ XXXXX.CC XXXXX.CO XXXXX.CO.UK XXXXX.COM XXXXX.INFO XXXXX.JOBS XXXXX.ME XXXXX.ME.UK XXXXX.MOBI XXXXX.MX XXXXX.NET.CN XXXXX.NL XXXXX.ORG.UK XXXXX.TW XXXXX.US XXXXX.WS XXXXXEXCHANGE.COM XXXXXONLINE.COM WIDGETSRUS.COM WIDGETBLOG.COM |

A site I have currently had the mega site links on the SERP results. Recently they have updated the mega links to the smaller 4 inline links under my SERP result. Any idea what happened or how do I correct this?
