Linkbuilding vs. Social -- Allocating scarce resources.
-
I just watched Rand's latest webinar on the end of search without social. It was very timely for me because I've been putting a lot of thought into how allocate my available person-hours.
It is clear that SEO these days necessitates both linkbuilding and social. But how much of each? (50%/50%?, 80%/20%?, etc.)
-For the DIY small business owner (<10 hours per week available for SEO)
-For SEO savvy web business (~20 hours per week available of SEO)
-For in-house or other full time SEO's (30+ hours available)
Clearly it depends on a lot of other factors, I'm just looking for a good rule of thumb that can be adjusted according to the business.

If only I had 120% to work with! Man I could use that extra twenty...
Thanks Phil

Essentially it depends on the nature of your website. Viral Videos have great Social Prowess if the take off but often fail in delivering valuable closes. The additional link value gained can be temporary in nature. If I had a dedicated resource I would spend 30% on Link Building, 30% on Social and 60% on building Quality Content that would be valuable for both Social and Partners to link to and utilize.

Hey thanks for your answer. That helps. That sounds about right to me. Its very hard to measure the return on each activity but its hard to imagine a successful site that doesn't have your four points.
-
Hard to say because its not clear where one ends and the other begins. A good link-building strategy will include a social component. I would say you should plan to spend time on:
-
Making sure your content has social features like share & like buttons
-
Creating great content that functions as link bait
-
Reaching out to similar sites to build relationships
-
Monitoring and responding to facebook posts and tweets
The first one is sort of initial setup, after that is in place divide your time equally between the last three, and make adjustments as it makes sense for you.

What's your preference - regurgitate content on social media or just post it the once?
Hi All, Not been on the forums for a while and this isn't really an SEO question. How do you feel about Twitter feeds that constantly regurgitate the same content. It's pretty much industry standard on most pages but if the content is yours, no affiliates or other people are involved - is it really necessary to plug the same 500 word blog post over and over? Personally, I don't like it. I think it looks spammy and unprofessional and in all honesty, I unfollow pages regularly because of it.. What do you guys think? Am I squandering content by not regurgitating? Happy Monday all - Jamie

Social Media Links
I cannot seem to find the answer through my research. Can somebody tell me if social media links to a website are taking into consideration by Google? For example, if l have a video on my website and post the link on my facebook page, when other people share it do more and more links get created? Are these picked up on open site explorer?

Quick Fire Social Academy
Has anyone heard of Quick Fire Social Academy?? (http://quickfiresocial.com) My boss just signed up for it and wants me to check it out. This the claim their website makes: "In 5 Minutes A Week Or Less You Can Setup A Full Social Media Campaign That's Full Of Red Hot Viral Content !" I went to their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/QuickFireSocial. They only have 7 likes and the page was just created in January of this year, AND I see no Red Hot content on their site. So, I have a few concerns. Is anybody using them? How are the results?

Pay with a Tweet (or other social payments) in the Freemium world
Hi Mozer(s), I work for a company which provides cloud-based collaboration environments for companies. Like many companies in this field, we offer a Free package, which gives users enough capabilities to explore our tool under business-alike circumstances. However, we currently dont have a time limit for our free version - which, makes us (I think) quite unique from a competitive standpoint. But consequently, it also means a lot of users see no immediate need to upgrade to a business package. If maintaining this business model, we are considering various options in how to generate more awareness. The company is quite new and can generally only get better results of SEO and social media advancement. One alternative is to start charging for signup to the Free package, using Social payments scheme, i.e. get access to the collaboration tools for free if liking, tweeting, plusing us, using a pre-defined message, hashtag, etc, using a hybrid approach, allowing users to edit some/all of the message. It may have an impact on number of sign ups, but are there other potential negative effects? I have seen some comments, both positive and negative, about its SEO impact, mostly positive, not least from this [Youmoz post](How To: Win Tweets and Influence Search Engines with PayWithaTweet).- though unlikely to have a direct SEO effect, it can increase sharing, exposure and SERP presence. But any flip sides social payment users should be aware of? Thanks in advance.

Wordpress Social Button Plugins Change
Hi Guys, I'm thinking of changing the plugin I used on my blog for people to share my blog posts on Facebook, Twitter and Google +. If I do this, would I lose all shares (meaning that all the buttons would go back to 0, I know the shared content would still appear on people's profiles)? Thanks, Carlos

Is the DoFollow vs NoFollow ratio important?
Our website has almost 50/50 ratio of dofollow and nofollow links, and our competitors have "better" ratios (more dofollow links). I suspect it is mainly due to Twitter - several of my blog posts went viral, and had thousands of tweets in total - and twitter links are all nofollow. But I'm not sure about that - do these link count? Also, do you think that this could cause problems? Should I worry about writing too much viral content without building traditional links first?

Social Media Convergence Issues
Hello and Good Morning, I have a tech convergence question... In our social media package we have listed that we will subscribe to hubpages and scribd. a lot of these services do the same thing (twitter vs identi.ca, color vs instagram, gowalla vs fourquare, ect), what are some of the better services to use and why? We have our favorites but they may not necessarily be the most effective. thanks!
