Question for SEO experts!

I am checking my competition with all the metrics available and I have no clue why we are not coming up higher in ranking on Google. It's been 3 months and we've been bouncing between 9 and 7 position. One competitor just came out of nowhere with almost 600 internal links and few external links and occupied 3rd spot.
I've built pretty good portfolio of links with links even coming from Google for crying out loud. My on page optimization is very good, we've even passed W3C with no errors.
At least 3 of our competitors above us have less Domain Authority, Page Authority, Back links for external domains, number of external domains, etc...
Not sure what is going on. We are not really trying to be the top dog in Google all the time, but it is the principle of a thing.
Keyword is Laser Marking. Our domain starts with cms. Don't want to type the whole URL because Google might crawl (maybe a bit of paranoid at this point LOL)
Any suggestions?

Sure you can email me the report.

I believe the SEOmoz link data is known to be sometimes not up to date as well as not a complete crawl of the web, although they do say the pages excluded form the opensite index are usually just very low quality pages.

Where did you get that title tag? I am looking in source code and can't find it.
-
Also data is incorrect. 27 external links really? That is just wrong..
-
Do you mind if I e-mail you report. BTW Now we are ranking #5 in Global results. Keep bouncing around back and forth..lol

Thanks for response. Please give me an example of what you mean...
-
Thanks for answer. What Title tag would you recommend?

You're swimming upstream, but it's not impossible for you to break to the top of results on your relatively broad term. Google wants very narrowly constructed "variety" in the first few results. Variety is interpreted within a keyword/key phrase's ambiguity (most have some amount of ambiguity). In your example, is someone who searches "laser marking" interested in the process of laser marking, products (commercial or consumer), etc... Google decided that they want to include the best example of each at the top. This ideal is only partially realized, but it's a defined goal in their search quality and I think they hit it more often on broad search terms.
Your site isn't the best match in any of those cases because you offer a variety of laser-related products. Even if your site was dedicated strictly to product laser marking d'absolute, you'd be in a tough spot. The best you can do as the algo currently exists is position 4 (epilog).
I'd also continue to work on the basics- blah, blah, blah AND inbound, keyword-rich links. Eyeballs on Epilog Dmitry. You can do it.

I don't see anything except a youtube video for cmslasers. If this is your title tag, then no wonder you're not ranking:
Control laser >> Laser Marking, Laser System, Laser Control, Laser Solutions, Laser Marking Solution, Solar Industry & Wavelength Lasers Uh, I think you forgot to mention the word laser.

Dimitry
Go to this tool and run a full report (see image) for your keyword. I have done so (and would share but the only export is an excel file).
Just looking at the metrics it provides: FB shares, linking C blocks, followed vs no-followed etc - it doesn't seem odd to me at all that google is ranking things how they are.
I'd advise running the report, understanding how the different metrics work and improving the ones that would make the most difference.
Rand has a great post on this tool, which you should use anytime you ask "why are things rankings the way they are?"

good one

Thinking about it in terms of percentages might be causing you a problem...
One thing that can be helpful if you are unsure whether your text reads naturally, is to get someone else to read it aloud while you listen. It's a good excuse for a break and a cup of coffee

I actually thought about that..I am still using olde school mentality of 4% keyword density. Got to scale back to 1% I guess.
Thanks for the info

Hi Dmitry,
On first look, my feeling is that your body text has crossed the line into being over optimized. If you are using Mozbar, try running the keyword highlight tool ... "laser" and "laser marking" are both highly repetitious. If you haven't already done so, it might be worth taking a look at the On-page reports in the Pro App for your site.
Hope that helps,
Sha

PDF best practices: to get them indexed or not? Do they pass SEO value to the site?
All PDFs have landing pages, and the pages are already indexed. If we allow the PDFs to get indexed, then they'd be downloadable directly from google's results page and we would not get GA events. The PDFs info would somewhat overlap with the landing pages info. Also, if we ever need to move content, we'd now have to redirects the links to the PDFs. What are best practices in this area? To index or not? What do you / your clients do and why? Would a PDF indexed by google and downloaded directly via a link in the SER page pass SEO juice to the domain? What if it's on a subdomain, like when hosted by Pardot? (www1.example.com)

What are all the 5's in SEO Queries in Analytics?
Every small business client has the same thing. 5 impressions for keywords, row after row, every single month. Why exactly 5 and why month after month the same thing? I see this in every local business I work in - and for very important phrases! It's gotten to the point that I think those are fake and I just look at the impressions that have numbers great than 5. Obviously I have to get their impressions up, but what am I to believe about these?

How to transfer 5 domains under one Brand domain without using 301 redirect with minimum SEO loss
My situation is rather complicated , I have 5 domains with different but identical services. Some with good traffic some without, but 2 main domains have manual penalty from Google (I have tried a lot to get rid of the penalty but no success) so finally I have decided to move all our websites under one anchor website 'a brand' and pass all the seo juice + blog articles under the same. Now the problem with the procedure is that we cannot redirect the penalized domain urls to new one as penalization will also be transferred and the whole motive of creating a new brand will be lost. So if somebody could guide me as of how I should proceed transferring SEO value with minimum traffic loss but without using 301) **One way I could figure out is using canonical (Am not confident over it) but say I create 5 identical pages on new domain and declare them as canonical of old domain pages (So is it safe? will it transfer the penalty of old domain to canonical new urls? ) ** Rest i am bifurcating all the traffic sources like direct / organic / referral / Social etc and chalking out what we can control manually and in what ratio, gradually I will work on each section to transfer the traffic. Main Problem is of Organic and Not available. Some suggestions or blog urls would be appreciated.

Some questions on how to set up a multi-visit advanced segment in Google Analytics
Hi I would like some assistance / clarification on how to set up a user segment so that it can track user behavior over multiple visits. Basically I have a campaign set up and want to see conversions - even if they hit the site and then convert later on another visit. I've read that you can do this (over up to 30 days). So I start off by filtering TRAFFIC SOURCE - easy enough. But then I have to add under "advanced" correct? But then when I set the next filter to the GOAL I want, I only get "by session" and "by hit" as options. The blog post I read made it sound like only "by user" would then really do multi visits. Is "by user" only an e-commerce tracking option? (which I don't have set up) Is there another way/path to get the info I need? Thank you!

Has anyone attended or hired anyone from Full Sail University? Or schools offering Internet Marketing or SEO
We are actively looking for a couple of positions. A qualified SEM (for PPC, etc) pro that has experience with Google but also others including BING and Yahoo. And a good SEO person who gets it is about delivering a result and not blowing sunshine up someone's skirt or pant leg.

That said I got a resume the other day from a guy and he stated he had a Master's Certificate in Internet Marketing from Full Sail University. I looked them up and they offer a Bachelors Degree and a Masters Degree in Internet Marketing. They also offer a certificate in Internet marketing they call a Master's certificate. So, I set a time for him to call me as I was mildly skeptical.
When I started asking about the certificate (His LinkedIn page had Masters Degree in IM) he said he had taken the certificate and I did not pursue the LinkedIn. I asked how long he was in school for the certificate and he stated 6 months (curriculum is 4 months and is fairly t h i n.
I asked what he had done and he had completed an Internship with a Texas company and helped a construction firm move to page one. When I asked how he started telling me about inserting keywords in the meta tag field in the CMS..... He did not know what a title tag was, knew nothing of content, H1, H2, Local Optimization and then wanted to tell me how when you put their Domain name in google they are number two on page One. So you get it, I believe. I am just really frustrated with the whole "certification" etc. thing and believe we do need it. Market Motive is as close to good as I can see, but I would love to hear from you. (Note on MM- I do not like the if you pay monthly you get Provider or whatever but it you shell out $3500 you are a Master. Just doesn't feel right to me. And, I did speak with someone a while back with a masters from them and again, I scratched my head). Would just like to hear of your experience and if anyone has hired from these schools with success.0 -
Expert Google Analytics: store with multiple languages and multiple sub-domians
I hope there's some hardcore Analytics shark out there, with a quick reply 🙂 I am setting up a store with multiple languages for a client and need to be able to track multiple sub-domains as a multiple languages in analytics. Example: dk.somedomain.com -> Danish language
Reporting & Analytics | | ReneReinholdt
www.somedomain.com -> English language
no.somedomain.com -> Norweigen language
.. and so on Now what the client would like is to have one single entity with multiple profiles in analytics, like this: somedomain.com
-> www.somedomain.com
-> dk.somedomain.com
-> no.somedomain.com
ex.. So if the client want's to see stats for the English language then he just vlivks the www profile and in case of danish he clicks the dk profile and so on.
problem here is I can't find an analytics help that addresses this specific issue. I have found this but that doesn't seem to cover it:. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. 🙂0 -

Can I find results for my SEO rankings over an extended period of time?
I was hoping to put a report together chronicling my SEO performance over the last 2 months and couldn't find a place to see prior information.
