Hi there if you get a domain off someone and change registrant details and hosting, to what extent does this affect the power of the site?

I agree. Clearly Google's systems are not designed to detect or penalize an innocent transfer. Using the video as an example, Matt Cutts clearly shared their systems were designed to catch spammer networks.

Well you would like to think an innocent domain transfer would not be seen as someone buying the site for link purposes then. I would hate someone to be branded like that when they weren't.

Google responses are intentionally vague. They are designed to educate webmasters about items where they should and should not focus their attention. They are not designed to share the details of how Google internally detects manipulation. If they shared such details, clearly black hat SEOs would use that information to their advantage.

Interesting video thanks. However he doesn't give any clues as to what Google look for to seperate a genuine domain transfer to someone just buying a site for links?

I have never seen any published discussion of this topic from Google so we are left to speculation. We know Google is a domain registrar even though they don't sell the service. It therefore seems likely they acquired their license to have either more complete access to data or more direct access to the data.
It seems likely Google tracks registration details and uses the information as one of the 200+ metrics when evaluating a site. Some examples of valuable information:

are the site's registration details public? Most "good" companies publish the information, while most shady companies keep it private. This is not a blanket statement, but it can be an indicator.

an ownership change can signal a possible change of content or other significant change on the site

does the ownership info match the About Us info? If so, the site is more transparent in nature

Is the site registered by a business or individual?
These and other similar questions can be tracked and possibly used in Google's algorithm. The one aspect I am confident is not used is the amount of registration time. Whether you register a site for 1 yr or 10 yrs should not make any SEO difference.
The above information is my opinion on the matter, not SEO fact. I don't believe anyone outside of Google can respond authoritatively on this topic. You will likely have others sharing their personal stories. The challenge there is when the information is changed there are often numerous other changes made (content, site software, etc) combined with the normal changes that happen which can impact ranking as well.

Are there SEO ramifications as a result of moving a group of sites that currently each have their own subdomain, under one subdomain? Ex: changing college.example.edu, dept1.example.edu and dept2.example.edu to college.example.edu, college.example.edu/dept1 and college.example.edu/dept2... etc. For example, let's say dept2 has a page about 4H and dept3 has a different page about 4H, if they're no longer their own subdomains, could only one of the 4H pages rank? Negative SEO impact of two Similar Domains on Same IP
Our ecommerce company has acquired a former competitor which has similar content & largely sells the same set of products. Both domains run on the same ecommerce platform version and do well organically on an overlapping set of keywords. Currently the websites are separate instances which are hosted separately. There is no interlinking or cross branding between the sites. Since each brand has strong equity & SEO, there are no plans to combine brands or domains. For several reasons, it would be ideal to combine platform instances and hosting, but we are concerned about potential SEO impact of shared IP addresses. Is it likely that moving the sites to the same IP/C-Block could have a negative SEO impact since they rank on the same keywords. Would Google devalue one site if they were seen to be connected or owned by the same company? I know this issue has been addressed for domains with more variance between products and content, but since there is a large overlap (but not duplicate content) between our two domains, we wanted additional insight. Obviously there are other SEO factors when you move a site, but we are currently trying to understand this specific factor. Thanks Community for your help! -Amber

Domain Change for a well positioned website... I'm a-scared
Hello, A few years ago I have "inherited" a website about a particular touristic area in Italy (the Langhe region) called langhe.net. The website is very well positioned, the domain has been registered in '97 and the overall SEO performance is pretty good (it ranks in the top #3 positions for all the main search queries in our niche). We are currently redesigning the whole thing, and one of the idea was to change the domain (and the name) of the website from langhe.net to lovelanghe.com (which we already registered). The reasons behind this decision are the following (most important first): Google prefer brands over keywords and "Langhe" is just a keyword LoveLanghe looks more memorable and "marketable" than just Langhe.net All our social presence is branded already as LoveLanghe (they were created years back under this name - I don't know why) We will do our due diligence work (301 everything, domain change in Search Console etc. etc.) but I'm still kind of worried that we will lose some ranking. So my question(s) are: do you think it's a good idea to change the domain when ranking is good and original domain is so old? how much ranking (approximately) are we going to lose? I have rebuilt a website on a new domain and followed SEO protocol to maintain authority, but the results and rankings are declining.
We took over an account for a company called knightdoorservices.com who specialize in doors and windows in Edmonton, Alberta. We built them a new website on a new domain: knightdoorsandwindows.com. We did 301 redirects on all of the old URLs so that they now point to the new URLs so most of the authority should transfer over. Additionally, each page has a properly optimized title, h1 tag, a series of pertinent alt tags, and many instances of the focus keyword for that particular page. Additionally, the website loads quickly and has many high authority inbound links pointing to the domain. We have done this for many other companies and have seen their rankings maintain their position or increase. Is there something that I am missing for this company in particular? Thanks so much!

Rebranding/Changing the name of an established domain in order to target a bigger market?
So let's say I have a site called "ToyotaParts.com" that has good SEO metrics and is ranking highly for keywords like "toyota tires", "toyota battery", etc.... What if I decide that I wanna target other cars as well with my site and keywords like "mazda tires", yet still want to take advantage of my domain's existing authority... Can I do something like get a new domain like "carparts.com" and redirect the old domain to it and then continue to create new pages that would target new keywords, or would I risk losing my current domain's authority or running into other seo issues? Buying Expired Domains with Decent DA/PA for SEO Purposes
Hey guys, i've seen some stuff about this before but I recently found an opportunity to put it into action and wanted to make sure I knew what I was getting into! I am looking at buying a domain (expired and now only 10 dollars) that has a decent domain authority and has some keywords in it related to my clients practice. I plan on using a 301 redirect to pass "link juice" because this client is looking for a quick bump in rankings. Thoughts? Benefits? Problems with this?

SEO Recommendations
For about 3 years our website was number one in Google.co.uk for our trades main keyphrase which resulted in excellent sales. About 12 months ago that position started to slide downwards and for that keyphrase we are now number 10. We are still at number's 1,2 and 3 for several other keyphrases but ones that result in fewer daily Google searches and resultant sales. I have always added unique content to the site but admit that my blog posts became less than daily over the past 12 months. However I am adding posts as often as I can now, of good length and of unique content. As well as tweaking all our online seo factors I'm trying to add good backlinks as often as possible. I wonder if anyone has been in a similar position and what they did to try and regain their previous position? Colin
