Homepage Hogging Too Many Keyword Ranks?
-
Hello:
I've been the publisher and SEO for Indie Rock Cafe since starting it in 2007.
It's done great, and has #1 - #5 positions in Google for many strong keywords like "best new albums", "best new bands", "top new bands", "popular indie rock songs", and so on.
However, for many of the results, the homepage keeps popping up over and over again. I thought I'd done everything right to get other pages on the site to rank for top keywords.
Another potential issue is that I expected the homepage to have a 6 PR by now, but it seems stuck on 5.
Any ideas?
Insight from SEOs and experts is always enlightening and helpful, so thank you in advance for your thoughts and advice.

Hi Marcus:
Thanks for your reply.
Actually, I do have other pages already employed with keywords I'm trying for - but those pages all stay at a PR of 3 for some reason:
http://www.indierockcafe.com/new-releases/ - "best new releases" or "best new albums" or "popular new albums" - You'll see I rank for these words - but it's almost always the homepage - I do realize that it has to do with links and anchor text going to the homepage rather than the other pages. Maybe link building for these pages will help change this?
http://www.indierockcafe.com/artists-and-bands/ - "hot new bands" "best rock bands" - you'll probably see I have #1,2,3 for all these rich keywords, but Google is almost always choosing the homepage.
(PS - I'm not trying to rank for variants that include "indie" because the site is saturated for that term
and
http://www.indierockcafe.com/top-ten-songs/ - "best new songs" "hot new songs" "popular rock songs", etc.
Regards
Phil

Remember that Google is trying to pull up the most relevant result for the specific search. So we need to see why Google would think that your homepage is more relevant then some of your interior pages that you have been trying to optimize for.
Now when you say "I'd done everything right to get other pages on the site to rank for top keywords."
Can you be more specific as to the strategies that you have implemented_?_
Also I wouldn't consider being "stuck" on PR5 a potential issue_._ Many site perform better then others with higher PR.http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/06/beyond-pagerank-graduating-to.html

Hey Phil
I have had a quick look but to make life easier could you possibly supply a few pages with the keywords you would expect them to rank for? We can then provide some direct feedback rather than generic advice which hopefully you can take and put into action across the site.
Cheers
Marcus

Keyword Stuffing and Product Reviews
Hello Fellow Mozzers! I am pretty new the SEO world and have been tasked with improving our companies SEO with no prior knowledge of anything to do with SEO as of about 5 months ago. So far, I have been fairly successful (May be luck). There is a product page on our website that has moved from Rank 8-9 all the way up to Rank 3, on a high volume keyword, which increased our traffic to that URL by 500%! I was very proud of this accomplishment until tragedy struck... We suddenly dropped to Rank 6. It doesn't look like we've lost any Backlinks to this URL. My suspicion is that we got penalized for Keyword Stuffing since we recently changed from have multiple pages for a specific product's reviews to having them all on one page (To decrease the number of URLs our Site has). Many of these product reviews have the Keyword in them making us have over 30 of this specific keyword on our page. Could this be a valid suspicion? Should we go back to having different URLs for reviews and Disallow them for Robots?

Blogposts and Google Rankings
I'm pretty new to all of this, my new website is starting to come along nicely in the SERPs, now appear on page 4 for my main key phrases were I didn't appear last week at all. I'm now on a mission to get myself ranked higher but my website is pretty much done... apart from the ongoing blogposts that I need to add, I'm a wedding photographer so every shoot is going on to it. My question, my blogposts aren't necessarily targeting my main key phrase, it might be mentioned once or twice but ultimately it'll most likely be the venue that steals the targeting. By adding the blogposts (I still have 36 to do) and using my keyphrase sparing, will this help to elevate me from page 4 in google? I know that I still need to build backlinks etc to but just something I can't seem to find an answer for on google hehe.

Is it difficult to rank for a keyword phrase with an H2 halfway down the page?
If your competitor has a page that is optimized for a keyword (title tag, URL, content) and you target the keyword halfway down a page with an H2 and a short paragraph about the keyword, are you at a strong disadvantage?

Too Many On-Page Links
Hi, I did a SEOmoz campaign and got results today, One of the results is Too "Many On-Page Links" when i am drilling down, i see that that's include inside links. for example, i sale food, i have my main department window - inside i have 30 products - each product is linked to a detailed page about the product. so automatically i have 30 links - not including all the others in this page, and i easily get over 100 and even sometimes 200 is this a big issue? does it damages my SEO? If yes, is there a way to write the HTML in a way that internal links like that wont be counted? Thank you SEOWiseUs

Can a page lose ranking because it has too many bold tags?
I run a product search website for the Engineering Sector. Each of the companies listed on the website has a profile page. This page used to rank very well in google. Over the last couple of weeks these pages disappeared for google i.e they fell about 20 to 30 spots in the search results for relevant keywords like the Manufacturer Name. I was trying to analyze the page and found that Each of the Categories that the manufacturer supports was listed in "bold" and linked to the page for that category. A manufacturer can support up to 20 or 30 categories so this results in about 20 or 30 Bold keywords. Is this a bad practice? Could this be a reason for a drop in ranking or do bold keywords on a page not matter? What are your views?

Product links on homepage
Hi, I;m wondering if it really does aid SEO or even hinder it now to have lists of top selling products as links on the base of each page. This was recommended to us sometime ago by a consultant so we did it but is it outdated? I'm concerned it may penalise our pages now by creating too many links? opinions appreciated. wwww.gourmetdirect.com and scroll down to see what I mean

Keyword Self- Cannibalization
I have a question about Keyword Self Cannibalization. I have a web page which is targeting the main keyword as "sarees". But this same page has internal linking from the keywords Benarasi Silk Sarees, Silk Saree, Traditional Sarees, cotton sarees, etc to their respectve pages. We are optimizing those pages separately for their respective keywords as well. When I run on-page report card for these web page from seomoz tool, I got an error says "Avoid Keyword Self-Cannibalization". Is this due to the internal linking from these keywords? Can anybody recommend a solution for this problem?
