How to defeat the clones!
-
Hello and welcome Mozfriends! Thank you for looking at my issue.
So I have been working on my a certain site for a client, optimizing it and such making it SE worthy. Without my knowledge about a month ago he launched two sites that are exact clones of the Ecommerce site I am optimizing. I mean EXACT alt image text, URLS, EVERYTHING! My Alexa rank started jumping back up, my google analytics was showing a fraction of the traffic I was receiving. I just learned about these two other sites and it makes sense because I have two copies of the site out there with the only difference being is the logo image on all 3. I need to know how I can rectify this without taking down the other two sites as my employer refuses to do so because he feels they are a necessary asset. Thank you in advance Friends!

Hey Ryan!
Thank you for the tips on how to conquer this beast. I truly appreciate it. Communication really isn't the problem it is more along the lines of getting ignored, but I will continue to try with my client. Have a great weekend!

It sounds like your client has taken actions which have a direct negative impact on the SEO of the website you were hired to optimize. As a first step, I would suggest speaking with the client so you develop a better working relationship. Help the client understand you need to be involved in all future decisions which regard any aspect of the website, including copying it or using any of it's content elsewhere.
Some steps you can also take:
-
canonicalize all your web pages. If the site is copied in the future, depending on how it is done, the pages could all show the canonical link back to the main site. This can be implemented on the copied sites now which would allow the main site to rank on all pages.
-
add the "noindex" tag to the copied sites so only the main site remains indexed
-
add authorship tags to the main site's pages to add to their credibility so they are more likely to remain indexed above the copied site's pages
-
while I prefer the above steps, if all else fails you can block the other sites with robots.txt files too
These and other tactics stem from a lack of communication between you and your client. The best course of action is to work together to understand how the course of action he took is not in his own best interests. If you wind up fighting your own client, it is likely both you and your client will both lose out.

Is there a tool to check the SEO performance of articles from different websites?
Is there a tool to check the SEO performance of articles(like 100+ articles) from different websites in one place? I am looking for a tool where I can put several URLs of the articles we have published in bulk for many of our clients, and it can show me how those articles are performing. This way, we can check the performance of these articles at any time; there is no need to add URLs every time.

Unsolved Wild fluctuations in ranking, any thoughts on why or what to do about it?
We have a keyword which is important to us and used to have rock steady rankings for over a decade. Over the past 9 months or so it has been fluctuating all over the place. Jumping up or down 20 places or so overnight. Any thoughts on this behaviour and what we should be doing to stabilise the ranking?Screenshot 2024-05-13 at 09.47.jpg

Organic traffic down
My 15 or so clients have all seen a drop in organic traffic by about 20% on GA4 for April. Rankings have not dropped or anything like that - so just wondering if anyone else has had similar?

How important is Lighthouse page speed measurement?
Hi, Many experts cite the Lighthouse speed as an important factor for search ranking. It's confusing because several top sites have Lighthouse speed of 30-40, yet they rank well. Also, some sites that load quickly have a low Lighthouse speed score (when I test on mobile/desktop they load much quicker than stated by Lighthouse). When we look at other image rich sites (such as Airbnb, John Deere etc) the Lighthouse score can be 30-40. Our site https://www.equipmentradar.com/ loads quickly on Desktop and Mobile, but the Lighthouse score is similar to Airbnb and so forth. We have many photos similar to photo below, probably 30-40, many of which load async. Should we spend more time optimizing Lighthouse or is it ok? Are large images fine to load async? Thank you, Dave bg_05.jpg

ECommerce Tracking in Analytics - Should I use a plugin or do it manually?
Hi, I have a WordPress site (woocommerce integrated). I would like to know should I use a plugin to enable e-commerce tracking in Google Analytics or I should do it manually with GTM. Which is a better way? Will using a plugin to enable e-commerce tracking slow down my site? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Organic search traffic down 60% since 8/1/18\. What now?
I have a small health & fitness blog, and my Google search traffic suddenly dropped 60% around August 1 (I've attempted to link an image). My rank has dropped for 86 keywords. I have no manual penalty, so I'm guessing I was affected by the algorithm change. My technical skills are VERY limited. I've tried to find answers on my own, but every time I try to "fix" something, I only seem to make it worse. I do seem to have some structural/performance issues with my site (e.g., lots of 404 errors from uninstalled plugins and unwanted permalinks). I asked my server for assistance (I used managed Wordpress hosting), and they said they couldn't help. As you can imagine, this is quite devastating, and I have no clue where to go from here. I don't know if I'm allowed to link to my site here, but it's mommyrunsit dot com. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Sharon 0lPu4wY

How to see organic traffic trend in GA?
Hi Guys, I want to identify whether organic landing pages in Google Analytics month on month (over 6 month period) have increased or decreased in traffic and whether the traffic trend is positive or negative. See attachment of the data. In total there are 500 pages, so it's just not feasible to review each organic chart for each organic landing page to view the trend. I’m sure there is some way to view this in Google Analytics, but just not sure how. Any suggestions? Cheers. 0Bnv85G.jpg
