Who gets credit for content
-
Does it really matter if somebody takes your content changes it slightly and republishes it?
This is my original article on history of house paints which was also published on ezine in Feb.
and from google alerts I discovered this page http://www.franklinpainting.com/blog/home/a-brief-history-of-house-painting/ a minimally modified version. It is not easy to create content so these folks just copied and made a blog post.
Their are now many versions of this on the web..who wins?

Thanks Ryan.

Let me first clarify copyright laws vary by country.
For the US, a copyright is in place whether or not a page offers a copyright notice. On the other hand, the more steps you take to protect your rights, the more able you will be to defend those rights when the need arises.
"It is not necessary to have a notice of copyright (i.e.:
1997 Jane Doe) for material to be copyright protected in the U.S. Once something tangible is produced, text, graphics, music, video, etc., it is automatically copyrighted."

Ryan, i need clarification regarding your first point.
"Without any copyright notice at all on the page, you are really leaving yourself wide open for theft. "
What if the content is still stolen with copyright notice in place ?
-
John, I understand your pain. Unfortunately most producers of quality content will have some work stolen at some point. In some cases, the content is taken exactly word-for-word. In other cases, the content is altered a bit. Either way, it is a form of theft.
There are various steps you can take to increase your protection against such theft.
1. You can add a Copyright to your page. I noticed your original page does not display any copyright at all. Without any copyright notice at all on the page, you are really leaving yourself wide open for theft.
2. You can improve upon a basic copyright notice by displaying a Creative Commons copyright notice: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/. A Creative Commons notice allows you to easily inform readers what level of copyright permissions you wish to grant.
3. You can pay to formally register your web page as copyrighted material. The cost is around $35.
4. At the highest levels, you can pay other companies to handle your copyright affairs. This process gets quite a bit more expensive. The company will register your copyright, ensure the proper license is in place, add various tags to your content, and perform monthly searches and scans of web content looking for any sites which may have violated your copyright. If any violations are found, the company will pursue the violators.
In most cases, you can successfully have the content removed. In some cases, it is very difficult as the site may be hosted in another country with lax copyright laws. In these cases you can contact Google or Bing directly and report the violation.

Another website copying our blog content but credit us. Still bad?
Hi Moz community, A few businesses that we work with are asking if they can leverage our content such as blogs by basically copying it and post it on their site. They will give us credit for the content though. My concern is that going to cause duplicate content issue and hurt us with our SEO? We'd like to provide it to them in a way that would benefit us or at least doesn't hurt us. I can think of a few possible options... 1. Have them only copy part of the content and link back to our site with a link "Read the original article" or something similar 2. Have them implement rel=canonical back to our site 3. Have them just copy the whole thing (because it doesn't really hurt us?). In that case, do we have them link back to us or no? Is there anything I missed? What's the best option for us? Thank you for the help in advance!

Kickass Tool for Content Writers
I have been a writer for a long time. I have done a lot of writing. Many excellent teachers, professors, bosses, colleagues, and editors have helped me. I've responded to a lot of red ink - a lot of red ink. A few days ago, I found a tool that has been extremely helpful. It has significantly improved the clarity of my writing. Using it on a piece of work makes me more confident about it at publication time. It requires a lot of work to use (at least it does for me) but the results are well worth the time. People who are serious about writing well will understand this tool immediately. http://www.hemingwayapp.com/ I don't own this website (I wish I did) and have no affiliation with it. Today they released a desktop version that they are almost giving away. I have not tried it yet but plan to instal it today.

Similar Content
I'm in the process of launching two new websites (redesign / rebrand) - one website represents the manufacturer while a second website represents the retail side of the manufacturer (same company essentially but two different brands). The sites have co-existed historically without worry of canibalizing the other's traffic, but I want to make sure in this redesign that we're all set. I'm curious if anyone has any recommendations on how to handle two sites with different branding but VERY similar content (product descriptions are essentially the same). I was thinking it could be smart to just no follow the content on the manufacturers site since we're just trying to drive traffic to the consumer-facing retail side mostly anyway but would love to hear from the experts! Thank you.

Promoting blog content
I've created a pinterest board, which kind of serves as a blog also as it tells people how they can save money on their heating bills this winter. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to promote it as a backlinking opportunity? Would it be good to also feature the content on our website? Guest blogging? Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thank you.

Question - Hidden Content via 'Read More;'
Hi, Does having text in hidden areas (that are expandable with a button) harm their value in SEO? E.g. there are 'read more' areas on the homepage of this site that have content that is not accessible otherwise. Does this content have the same weight when it is hidden versus if this whole area was visible? http://goo.gl/QQvAZ
