Title Tag, Are the Keywords Plucked out of it?
-
We are working on redoing our site and I read the article from rand about how to properly format title tags, here http://www.seomoz.org/blog/tactical-seo-how-many-termsphrases-should-i-target-on-a-single-page
He showed how he could take 6 keywords and use them all in the title tag:
The title Tag:
Ted Baker London - Men's Clothing Collections 2005-2008 | Sartorialmoz.orgThe keywords:
Ted Baker
Ted Baker London
Ted Baker Clothing
Ted Baker Mens
Ted Baker Mens Clothing
Ted Baker Mens CollectionSo what I am wondering is the keyword Ted Baker Mens Collection actually getting found. In this case we are dealing with a contraction (men's) and a plural form of a keyword (collections).
Is it plucked out from the title tag above?
Like this? Ted Baker London - Men's Clothing Collections 2005-2008 | Sartorialmoz.orgIn his article he goes on to say the biggest mistake he sees is, unfortunately exactly the way our site was built 6 years ago. That is people doing this:
Ted Baker, Ted Baker London, Ted Baker Clothing, Ted Baker Men's Clothing, Ted Baker Clothing Collection - Buy Online Now at Manamialameseo.com
Our site does just that, while we are PR 4 and get decent traffic for the business we are in, we are doing a huge update with new pages, information, and most importantly trying to get all the SEO the best as possible.
I want to make sure before we make these what could be huge impact changes that search engines do in fact Pluck the keywords from the title tag, and they are not required to be together.
Thank you for any thoughts, answers and most importantly your time.
Example following this formula:
Our Top 3 Keywords:
Molded Rubber
Rubber Molding
Custom Molded RubberOur Old way:
Title: Custom Molded Rubber, Rubber Molding, Molded Rubber
The new way:
Title: Custom Molded Rubber - Molding Services | OurSite.com -
Hi There,
A good question.
**1) **Your example for Ted Baker based on a similar Title structure for your own site:
Ted Baker, Ted Baker London, Ted Baker Clothing, Ted Baker Men's Clothing, Ted Baker Clothing Collection - Buy Online Now at Manamialameseo.com
This is not an ideal title, it is spammy with all those mentions of 'Ted Baker' within, is too long and is simply not necessary, it's not good for Search and also it's not that good for User Experience/Readability.
So it's best to avoid these types of Titles
2) Your example from the SEOmoz blog post that you linked to:
Ted Baker London - Men's Clothing Collections 2005-2008 | Sartorialmoz.org
This is a much better Title structure; it starts off with the main keywords/keyword phrase (great for search) followed by a descriptive title element based on what that actual page in question provides.
NB. The Domain Name/Business Name at the end is usually unnecessary for pages other than the homepage, about us page and contact page. In this example, it seems to repeat the domain name, a waste of valuable space and simply doesn't need a repeat of the domain name. Other than that, it appears to be a great Title tag for what I imagine the page is about.
What this better Title example in 2) above is getting at is Symantec Search. This can be two things:
i) Words that are closely related (Collection and Collections) (Clothes and Clothing) are assumed to be the same thing, so if the search phrase contains e.g. Clothes, relevant pages optimized for Clothing can be returned in search results.
ii) Where words in a title are taken to form the phrase being searched on, as per your suggested example in your question (Ted Baker Mens Collection). The words don't have to appear in order, if they are close together, that can be good enough, so with a great Title, you'll be catering for many different versions of a similar search.
So to sum up, start replacing your current Title structure with the structure in that Blog Post (it's an old blog post, though still spot-on today) and in your question (and 2) in this answer). From your question, it seems that you suspected this to be the better option of the two, which is most certainly is.
So that's an example structure of:
**Ted Baker London - Men's Clothing Collections 2005-2008 **
as your new structure, for appropriate pages, without the domain/business name at the end for most pages.
Hope that helps,
Regards
Simon

Product Tag Value on SEO
Do product tags for ecommerce sites have any benefit to SEO? Or are they redundant? i.e. thespacecollective.com/astronaut-moldavite-pendant (tags appear below the product name on the right)

Avoiding Duplicate Title Tags and Duplicate Content
Hi - I have a question on how to both avoid duplicate title tags and duplicate content AND still create a good user experience. I have a lot of SEO basics to do as the company has not done any SEO to this point. I work for a small cruise line. We have a page for each cruise. Each cruise is associated with a unique itinerary. However the ports of call are not necessarily unique to each itinerary. For each port on the itinerary there are also a set of excursions and if the port is the embark/disembark port, hotels that are associated. The availability of the excursions and hotels depends on the dates associated with the cruise. Today, we have two pages associated with each cruise for the excursions and hotels: mycruisecompany.com/cruise/name-of-cruise/port/excursion/?date=dateinport mycruisecompany.com/cruise/name-of-cruise/port/hotel/?date=dateinport When someone navigates to these pages, they can see a list of relevant content. From a user perspective the list I see is only associated with the relevant date (which is determined by a set of query parameters). Unfortunately, there are situations where the same content is on multiple pages. For instance the exact same set of hotels or excursions might be available for two different cruises or on multiple dates of the same cruise. This is causing a couple of different challenges. For instance, with regard to title tags, we have <title>Hotels in Rome</title> multiple times. I know that isn't good. If I tried to just have a hub page with hotels and a hub page with excursions available from each cruise and then a page for each hotel and excursion, each with a unique title tag, then the challenge is that I don't know how to not make the customer have to work through whether the hotel they are looking for is actually available on the dates in question. So while I can guarantee unique content/title tags, I end up asking the user to think too much. Thoughts?

Titles
Our site http://villasdini.com is offering beach villas on sunny Diani beach in Kenya. I have a category with beach villas in Diani beach which I want to be shown in serp if somebody search for Diani beach villas, or Diani beach hotels, Diani beach accommodation etc. I have also category with small boutique hotels, which I want to be shown in serp if somebody search for Diani beach villas, or Diani beach hotels, Diani beach accommodation etc. Should I also include Diani beach in titles? Will that not be too much of Diani bech in titles? I am afraid I have anyway already too much of "Diani beach" keyword and perhaps I am even punished for it as I can't rank for this keyword at all almost a year:-( I also want to rank on Diani beach itself and I have created Diani beach page which I want to be shown in serp when somebody search for Diani beach. I am kind of getting crazy of this:-( Any advice what I am doing wrong and what strategy I should rather do? Thank you very much, Iris

Keyword in home II
Hi there! As someone told me in this forum it's important regarding SEO that the home page has the keyword in the url. When I type in www.tarifakitesurfcamp.com the home page is shown but it doesn't have the keyword por that page (cause obiously I didn't make any change at all) . I mean it should be something like www.tarifakitesurfcamp.com/KEYWORD right? The problem comes when I try to edit the url in the page section of wordpress. I'm not allowed to do that. Otherwise I CAN edit the rest of the pages of the website (not the home or considered as home). Does anybody have an answer for this issue? Thanks

Same keyword for almost same content
Hi all! my site deals with a concept called "motivation" in two different categories: motivation for teachers (related to kids) and motivation for parents (related to kids all well). These two categories (in different pages and in different menus) deals with the concept through different perspectives. BUT the keyword to optimize the pages is the same. Due to the structure of the web I've been given I am in this position. I can't redesign the web (I'm not allowed to do it). Any solution related to the keyword? Should I maybe optimize one page with the keyword and in this page have a link to the other not-optimzed page?Any ideas? Thanks in advanced.

How long before I give up on a keyword
Making the assumption that all "controllable" factors are done correctly, and your DA and PA are competitive, is there a good rule of thumb on how long I should give a keyword before I try for a different keyword if I'm unable to break the first page on the Google's SERP?

Home Page Keyword Retargeting
Hi Guys! I have a question regarding the risk of **re-targeting **your homepage to another **keyword. ** To give a little background: I am working on a clients site that targets a keyword we initially thought during the keyword research phase, would be an appropriate target. What we found out is that it is not. Everything in analytics points to this keyword not performing well. We now want to re target the homepage to another keyword target. My questions are: How risky is it to do this given we have already done a fair amount of link building to the home page with anchor text from the initial keyword target? Will this look suspicious to google? What sort of things should we consider before moving forward with this change?
