SEO for Japan
-
Google and Yahoo are the two major search engines in Japan. You can search using Western characters, and you often see English language results with Japanese (Chinese) characters next to them.
As I don't speak Japanese, how do I approach SEO for my Japanese-language site? would appreciate any experiences and educational sources on the topic.

Hello Knut,
Below are a few articles and White Board Friday's to give you a quick primer regarding SEO. There's definitely more of these out there so don't hesitate to ask Google!
WBF - International SEO: Where to Host and How to Target
YOUmoz - International SEO Part 2
mozBlog - Geolocation & International SEO FAQI've had a little experience SEO-ing websites in Japanese and the landscape is completely different. For starters, Yahoo is actually the dominant search engine but they use the Google algorithm - so just focus on Google's main ranking factors.
Since you don't know any Japanese you'll need someone VERY fluent in the written language so that you can account for both Kanji AND Chinese. You'll need to make a business decision on whether you want to write it in one form or the other - keyword research would definitely help here.
Don't be surprised if most of your visitors are coming from mobile - that's just how the technological culture is in Japan. Most people surf the web using their cell phones (since they are light years ahead of us) and not so much from their computer.
Last but not least, create great content to attract links. Your easiest links will come from those your website/business already has a relationship with. It comes from the Chinese concept of "guanxi" which literally means "relationships" and is an extension of the culture.
I hope that helps you get started and good luck!

It is a bit tricky to deal with, and for high end SEO you will need a japanese speaker to optimize your landing pages and for local link building.

Changing commenting platforms...will deleting old comments hurt SEO?
Hi everyone, We've decided to move away from Disqus and use Facebook comments on one of our blogs. Our users prefer it, and we saw traffic increase when we did it on another site. My question is, will removing old comments (we have hundreds of them per post) hurt my seo? I've scoured the internet for an answer but can't find anything up to date. Old best practices said to keep old comments. What do you think? Thanks!

Keeping SEO benefit of an old URL by changing content
We have a blog written in Oct 2012 that accounts for 30-40% of our traffic (174K pageviews per year/80% bounce rate). We are considering updating the content but are concerned that it will fall off the search engine's map if the content is updated to include information that is not exactly the same, but relevant. The URL would be the same and the original blog content would be shortened with a link to the full blog. The new content would include other FDA products under investigation. Do you guys have any tips on important stuff to remember when doing SEO for this site?

Duplicate Content when Using "visibility classes" in responsive design layouts? - a SEO-Problem?
I have text in the right column of my responsive layout which will show up below the the principal content on small devices. To do this I use visibility classes for DIVs. So I have a DIV with with a unique style text that is visible only on large screen sizes. I copied the same text into another div which shows only up only on small devices while the other div will be hidden in this moment. Technically I have the same text twice on my page. So this might be duplicate content detected as SPAM? I'm concerned because hidden text on page via expand-collapsable textblocks will be read by bots and in my case they will detect it twice?Does anybody have experiences on this issue?bestHolger

Does anyone know an "updated" all in one cheat cheat for on page SEO
howdy guys, after panda, and penguin, i wanted to know if anyone has any good references for a cheat sheet that has ALL the on page SEO factors like title tag, image tags, H1-H6, etc, the basics, but since the zoo got loose I dont know if things have changed for on page SEO. For example what is the optimal KW density we should be using etc. i found this list : http://www.vaughns-1-pagers.com/internet/google-ranking-factors.htm but it seems to be a bit outdated, if someone can share something similar to this list but something more recent, like a few weeks old, i think that would help the community out a great bunch! thanks guys

Change 10yrs old home title tag seo safe?
Howdy everyone! Wish you the best for 2012! We have a client who is ranked #1 for keyword "blue widgets". Their site's homepage title has the keyword "blue widgets" in it and has been the same for 10yrs+. Recently they have added other types of widgets to their offering. Is it safe to change their title by adding more keywords to it? For example: "blue widgets | green widgets | brand x widgets". May our client lose their ranking if we change their title? Thanks in advance for your help!
