Video Rankings and Optimization Issues
-
I have noticed for some pages of the site I am working on that I see the video that is posted on that page ranking a lot higher than the page itself or the page does not rank at all, just the video.
I'm curious to know if these two can technically be competing for rankings and if Google sees that the page does not need to rank because it chooses to put the related video into the SERPs.
Also, has anyone seen any differences in the way videos rank based on where it's hosted (youtube, wistia, etc)?
I would think this is common sense not to but still unsure, is it bad practice to keep videos hosted on multiple sites (currently I am adding videos on a new host, but have not deleted the old ones on Youtube yet)?

Hi Dylan,
Wow, I totally should have read your question before I posted one of my own.
First of all, no hard evidence on this..but it appears to me that Google is giving a page a rankings boost when a video is embedded on it...and in my case, these videos are hosted a variety of places - not just YouTube (one on site, one on a product manufacturer's). Conveniently enough, they also give you a chance to gain more of the SERP by pulling out the video within with a thumbnail.
In my case, the two pages became visible in brand searches for my company, though those pages were NOT optimized at all for our brand terms, and have nothing but internal links to them. Investigation is on-going - I haven't checked if they rank for what they're optimized for, but this is probably moot since they ranked well before.
Anyway, takeaway for me appears to be Google is giving more love to videos as quality content & ranking factors...and hosting platform doesn't matter...but my evidence is minimal at this point.
Also, all searches were performed Universal Google..not on Youtube.

These are just observations... I have not done a detailed study....
I have blog that ranks #1 for a moderately competitive term. One day my #1 ranking disappeared... but a video from one of the blog posts was displayed in universal search results. I deleted the video and the #1 ranking came back a couple weeks later - when the video result disappeared.
So, if organic SERP rankings and universal search results compete - one displacing the other - then someone with #1 rankings could lose that position from a video.
On your second question.....
I am only placing my videos on YouTube because I believe that the number of views and embeds that they receive contribute to favorable rankings in a YouTube search result. I'd like to know more about how they rank videos.. if this is not correct let me know.

One keyword optimization for the whole site
Hello Folks at MOZ, I am new here and I am glad there's this section of the site where newbies can get help for SEO. I have a specific keyword which needs to rank as well as possible, and all other keywords, well they are automatically in the description text alt tags and in couple of page titles. So my keyword which I would need to rank as high as possible is "24k gold iphone 6" and it has quite lot's of searches per month, and my site is now one second page of google results. My question is: I don't care much about other keywords right now, so would it make sense to make on one or two pages which sell the 24k gold iphone of my website the title, the page url, headers, alt tags, image names, to be exactly "24k gold iphone 6" and /24k-gold-iphone-6.html etc. without any other text. I believe there is a difference in having exact same page title name etc as the keyword, without any additional text is good for ranking? Also I guess there is limit on how much this naming of files, titles etc can be used before google might give a penalty for it... so I guess I have to be careful. Many thanks for anybody who takes time to respond.

Switching from ranked PDF to normal page ...
Hi folks, I have a project which is ranking well for specific product-keywords. The problem is, that the ranking pages are PDF files of those products (datasheets). But i do have a normal (html) pages for each product as well. Each of these pages has grade a for the specific keyword and is well crawled, etc. How can I urge Google to "switch" from these PDF files to the specific html pages. I was trying this by testing it robots.txt to disallow to index the PDF file (I tested it with one for first). I would add rel=nofollow to the link to the PDF on the specifi product html page (?) ... Any ideas? Seb

How to build links with really good S3 hosted video using JW Player
I have a number of really good quality videos that are embedded on my own site. Many are "how to" or "what to do if" type video guides with questions answered by experts. They were professionally shot. So that I could reap the full SEO benefit from the videos, I have them hosted via Amazon S3 and am using an embedded JW Player. We have a video sitemap and, as a result, most of the videos have already been indexed by Google and are showing up in Google video search as residing on our webpage. Now the real problem is how to get some link benefit from them. They should be viable and valuable link bait. My initial thought was to do a PR Web type press release with the video embedded in it. The problem with that is that you are limited to Youtube and Vimeo embedded video which defeats that purpose entirely. PR Newswire has different issues but the end result is the same, I can't embed those videos with them either. As far as I can tell, all I could do with a press release would be to link to the videos. Moreover, I don't even know that press releases would be that valuable in the post penguin world but the hope was that people would share the videos naturally. So, I put it to the experts. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get some link benefit from these videos? Any ideas at all? I am stumped. Any advice would be appreciated.

Videos impact on SEOmoz On Page Analysis
For several years we've heard that Google rewards pages that include videos with significantly higher page ranks, however I do not see video incorporated into the On Page Analysis. One of our competitors ranks 1st-3rd on a several keywords while the On Page Analysis tool grades them as an F for the same keywords. This competitor uses video more than any of the others, and has far more YouTube subscribers. I suspect video plays a role in their excellent SERP. Is there a video evaluation tool within SEOmoz? If not, is one coming, or is there a reason why it would not be appropriate? Does anyone have suggestions for incorporating the use of videos in SEO evaluations and recommendations? Thank you, Michael

Issues with google places.
Hey there! A few weeks ago I made some changes to my client's "google places page". I am facing two issues there which I could not resolve on my own, they are: After I made changes and updated the page I could not see any activity on the analytics section whereas before I updated the page there was some metrics visible. The client had already claimed his places page before he came to me and entered some information. He just stuffed some keywords in the description section. I made necessary changes to the description based on the best practices for places page and according to Google's guideline for creating a great listing. The problem is the category did not update on the places page that show up in SERPs(it ranks top for four major keywords with geo indicators). However, the changes I made does appear when on the lower left side when I login into my places page. I don't see any link that will let me edit "description". Am I confusing some other section with category? I have tried to be as lucid as possible. I will appreciate any help. Thanks for your time. epMp kPWpf
