Analyzing cometitiors back links
-
Hello, I have been working on getting links to my site www.healthyjava.com by offering bloggers free products to hand out in drawings and contest. We have had some small success with that but when I was analyzing one of my competitors I found that there strongest link is www.promotemydomain.com. It looks like some sort of free link index, and has NOTHING to do with our relevant product. Yet he out ranks me by a LOT.
What gives here? I was under the impression that google does not value free link indexes much.
Should I pursue getting in that index too? Or will he someday get penalized by being in there?
On the flip side, what if a competitor places MY link in there.. Could I get penalized even though I didn't do it?
Thank you,
Jacob Bushnell

Jacob,
This is a question any of us ask from time to time. Unfortunately, and I think Google says it too, they are not at a place where everything is "caught" even with all the changes in the algorithm in the last year or two. So,when looking at a competitor, it is easy to get caught up in the, "They have these bogus links and are outranking me." game.
I would suggest you not get caught up in that worry as you will be focusing on the wrong thing. I don't think if you want to go get that link, given you are not in the most competitive space on the web and assuming your site/pages are not repositories of Chinese Gambling Ginseng Sexual Enhancement links by the gross, you should be fine. I doubt that it will change anything drastically though for the positive.I would focus on the other aspects of SEO and on continuing to build your links to your sites. This will pay off much better. By focusing on quality on page SEO and really focusing on it you beat out 90% of your competitors. By focusing as much as possible in local where you can, you beat out at least 75% of your competitors. By having ripping good meta descriptions that make people want to visit you get more conversions. If you consider that links are 20% of SEO +/- then there is roughly 80% left. By focusing on the 20 you are ceding too much ground to the guy who takes the easy way out. If you want to bust his chops, get the rest of it so tight he cries and continue to build quality back links; in a few months see who wins.

When conducting a link building strategy does it matter the country the link is from?
We are a UK business and if we have links mostly from US based blogs and websites does this penalise us. The links are from relevant websites and topics. Should we be focusing on .co.uk sites

Better to place linked-back article or post article and seek multiple links?
Which option is better for SEO purposes: 1. Author article for trade journal in return for link back to my home page. 2. Post article on my site and solicit links from multiple sites. Assume links all have moderate authority.

Why am I getting links in my link report from sites that no longer exist?
So, I have a link report from Link Detox. And I'm going through all of them and considering what sites need to be removed. and trying to find emails and contact webmasters. There is just one odd thing i'm starting to see more of. A lot of links are on websites or webpages that no longer exist. The link no longer exists. Some of the domains are even available for purchase. Why are these links showing on the backlink report and are they really harming my website? Also, do I need to add these links into the disavow document that I will submit to Google?

How To Increase Back Links
Our web store, www.audiobooksonline.com has good PageRank (6) compared to some competitors for the keywords audiobook, audiobooks, audio book, audio books. One big difference is that most top ranking competitors have significantly more back links including from .gov and .edu sites. Our domain URL has been on the Web since 1997 so naturally occurring back links likely has run its course. What is the best way to get more back links? Best tool to get back links with?

Total Links vs Ext. Followed Links
Hi I'm fairly new to SEO and SEOMOZ. I've created a campaign for my own site and I've added 3 competitor sites. There are 1,385 total links to my site and a massive 49,450 links to one of my competitor's site. However under "Ext. Followed Links", there are 1,045 to my site and only 911 to the same competitor site. Am I correct that it is the "Ext. Followed Links" which are more important from an SEO point of view as the other links have the "no follow" attribute set? Or have I got this wrong? Thanks James

Links - In need of ideas
Hi there! I have tried my best to get quality back links to my http://www.petmedicalcenter.com site but I feel like I have hit a wall. I have searched my competition to see what links they are getting and have been successful with some. Some websites just don't respond. Are there any valuable resources I am missing? Or ideas? My biggest concern is ranking well for the search term "vet las vegas" and "las vegas veterinarians". So far I have managed to get to the second page on Google. Thanks in advance for your help!
