Why is this site ranking 1st?
-
I'm a relative SEO newbie, so please go easy on me.
I've been an SEOMOZ pro user for a few months and have used it to dramatically improve my organic rankings.
However, for the life of me, I cannot determine why the site that currently ranks number one, does so. For the factors I can determine, they shouldn't be ranking where they are, but reality is different. Could someone please offer me some ideas?
My target keyword is "photography classes edmonton"
My site is www.bsop.ca and I'm targetting the Google Canada engine.
Any and all assistance is appreciated.

Hi Paul, I took a quick look at the OSE for your site and your competitor. It seems to me that we are both running into a similar issue. How old is your site? When did SEO work on your site begin?
Your competitor has forum posts from 2009 here: http://www.thephotoforum.com/
Have you considered joining and posting on this forum?
Perhaps there's another one that you could join as well?check out this thread that I started for where I'm coming from.

Site age could also have a lot to do with it...also, is your anchor text the exact keyword you are trying to rank for?

Thanks for the information.
But when I look at Opensitexplorer.org and compare the two sites, I see that they have 28 links from 4 domains (highest domain authority is 61) while my domain has 122 inbound links from 14 domains (highest domain authority is 97.
So, I know I'm still learning, but I guess I'm still missing where the deficiency is?
Thanks,
Paul

I am assuming you are trying to rank against the first results www.cplc.ca
If you look at the links in open site explorer, you can see that this website has targeted exact match anchor text from pretty high domain authority domains (in the 50s and 60s). You can see all externals links pointing to that domain here:
Your backlink profile isn't as diverse and targeted as theirs. Try looking at their links and try to get the same ones pointing to your targeted page, which looks like your home page.
Hope this helps!

How can I tell if my site was impacted by the March 2019 Core Update?
I am trying to determine if my website was impacted by the March 2019 Core Update. Based on the various articles I have been reading, I do not believe my niche (software) was impacted. I see a very small tick up on search console and google analytics, but it is well within the normal range. Where else should I be looking to see if we were impacted? Thank you!

Linking from high ranking sub domain pages to less ranking main domain pages to benefit latter
Hi all, We have our product guide pages on sub domain which are years old, so have some backlinks and high ranking for the beand related queries. Now we created new guide pages on our main website and we want these new pages to rank top beating the old pages from sub domain. Again we can't deindex or rel canonical to solve the issue as there are some part of users still using the old pages. We are planning to give a link from every old page of sub domain to same new page on main domain. Will this linking increases the authority of new pages technically and helps in ranking better? Like we give a link to "Moz guide 1" page to "Moz guide 2" page to rank latter better. Thanks

Https slower site Versus Non https faster site??
Hey all, I know that everyone is going on about https as a ranking signal (as far as I read it is not a very important ranking signal, but a low ranking signal) but Site speed is a ranking signal https is now a ranking signal as well https makes sites slower So in view of the above, what's better? An https site that is slower A non https site that is faster Thanks!

Losing rank to Scholarly Articles and Keyword Description Stuffing
I began reviewing the rankings this week and noticed that many of our #1,#2, etc rankings had been bummed down as a whole. After reviewing many of the search terms it seems Google has begun to rank a group named Scholarly Articles in the #1 position. Has anyone else noticed this change? Secondly, many of the rankings we have lost are due to some competitors stuffing their descriptions with keywords. #1 Rank Description Failure Analysis; Scanning Electron Microscopy & EDS Analysis. Paint Chip Analysis and Evaluation; Paint Tests Physical Testing of Paints. #1 Rank Description NACE certified coatings inspector, paint inspector, coating inspector, coatings inspector, lining, failure analysis, survey, corrosion, rust, evaluation, testing, expert Is this a possible glitch occurring with the new humming bird release and has anyone else noticed an issue like this? It dropped our #1 ranks from 37 to 23 overnight. Thanks

Does Site Size Influence Rank?
The Scenario:
Algorithm Updates | | kchandler
Currently one of my clients has 7-8 products that they sell on their website. For each product they have two different pages one with the product info and one with a video demo. So the pages began to split their authority as they began receiving new links. Since only one of the two pages for each product rank i suggested that we combine the two and redirect the video page to the product page to increases it's authority and rank. The Clients Response:
After explaining my reasoning and next steps the client mentioned that he thought a site's size was a ranking factor. I had never heard of this before so i told them i would do some research to prove my point, after a little digging around i am now even more confused. http://www.seroundtable.com/google-size-ranking-17044.html http://www.webmasterworld.com/google/4591155.htm The Question:
Does a websites size/amount of content indexed in Google actually effect your sites ability to rank? I look forward to everyones feedback, thanks Kyle1 -
