What's the best way to solve this sites duplicate content issues?
-
Hi,
The site is www.expressgolf.co.uk and is an e-commerce website with lots of categories and brands.
I'm trying to achieve one single unique URL for each category / brand page to avoid duplicate content and to get the correct URL's indexed.
Currently it looks like this...
Main URL
http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green
Different Versions
http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/
http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/1
http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/2
http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/3
http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/4
http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/all
http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/1/
http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/2/
http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/3/
http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/4/
http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/all/
Firstly, what is the best course of action to make all versions point to the main URL and keep them from being indexed - Canonical Tag, NOINDEX or block them in robots?
Secondly, do I just need to 301 the (/) from all URL's to the non (/) URL's ?
I'm sure this question has been answered but I was having trouble coming to a solution for this one site.
Cheers,
Paul

Greetings Champion!
Cannonical Linking is the best way to go!
For your conundrum in Example B with the Calvin Green I would find out which URL version is dominant or has the most link juice and structure the redirects to that links. For instance, let us say [http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/] is the dominant link I would have the copy urls pointing back to that one like so
I manage an Ecommerce Site as well, I had the same issue with the categories and what I basically did the same thing for each level of my site, categories that have the url ending in /1, /2, /3 and so on I would redirect to the first page to make that Url stronger.
Practically think about what Noindexing or Nofollowing would do, you would lose so much link power that you could harness, With redirects you can focus this power in a more effective manner.
Also I was snooping and clicked Golf Clubs which took me to this URL
expressgolf.co .uk/shop/clubs
Made me realize that you had "clubs" at the end, I would put Golf Clubs because when you do a keyword search for Clubs, Bars come up. Putting a Keyword in the URL can greatly enhance that URL. Just a tip if you want to utilize it or not friend ^.^.
Good luck on your quest for Page 1!

It really sounds like canonical is what you need here. Here is Matt Cutts explaining:
-
Hi,
I would say canonical or rel=”next” and rel=”prev”
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/09/pagination-with-relnext-and-relprev.html
Would probably be your best bets, as a 301 would solve from a Search Engine perspective, but definitely not good for users wanting to see different versions of the product in question.
hope this helps

Question on Google's Site: Search
A client currently has two domains with the same content on each. When I pull up a Cached version of the site, I noticed that it has a Cache of the correct page on it. However, when I do a site: in Google, I am seeing the domain that we don't want Google indexing. Is this a problem? There is no canonical tag and I'm not sure how Google knows to cache the correct website but it does. I'm assuming they have this set in webmaster tools? Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!

Duplicate Content
Hello guys, After fixing the rel tag on similar pages on the site I thought that duplicate content issue were resolved. I checked HTML Improvements on GWT and instead of going down as I expected, it went up. The duplicate issues affect identical product pages which differ from each other just for one detail, let's say length or colour. I could write different meta tags as the duplicate is the meta description, and I did it for some products but still didn't have any effects and they are still showing as duplicates. What would the problem be? Cheers

My beta site (beta.website.com) has been inadvertently indexed. Its cached pages are taking traffic away from our real website (website.com). Should I just "NO INDEX" the entire beta site and if so, what's the best way to do this? Please advise.

Duplicate Titles Aren't Actually Duplicate
I am seeing duplicate title errors, but when I go to fix the problem, the titles are not actually identical. Any advice? Becky

To integrate a blog tool onto site - or build a blog solution - what's better for SEO?
Currently looking at adding a blog to our company site subdirectory and wanted to know if there was a SEO distinction between the following methods: Integrating a bolt-on blog tool with the site to create the blog VS. just using the current site infrastructure to build blog functionality. What's better for SEO? (and if tool integration is the overwhelming response - which tool?). Cheers.

Best way to retain banklink values when moving site?
Hi all, I want to get some opinions on what the best practice is when transferring backlink values from an old site to a new one. On the old site, I currently have a product page and this particular product has multiple models all listed on the one singe page. However on the new site, every model of this particular product has its own page. These product model pages would have relatively similar content apart from several key details which differentiates the models. Firstly would you guys recommend this splitting of models of the same product to different pages? If so, my initial thought process is to 301 redirect the old product page to the new model page that is most popular, and adding rel canonical tags to the other model pages. Would you consider this best practice? Or are there better ways I can be doing this to retain backlink values without also getting penalised due to possible content duplication? Thanks! Jac - sent from my manager's account.

Is there an easier way from the server to prevent duplicate page content?
I know that using either 301 or 302 will fix the problem of duplicate page content. My question would be; is there an easier way of preventing duplicate page content when it's an issue with the URL. For example: URL: http://example.com URL: http://www.example.com My guess would be like it says here, that it's a setting issue with the server. If anyone has some pointers on how to prevent this from occurring, it would be greatly appreciated.

When launching a site redesign, what is the best way to roll it out?
We are currently working on a site re-design and are getting close to launch. When launching the newly designed site, what is the best way to roll it out? 301 Redirects with an under construction page? Just upload the entire site at once? or al little of both? Thank You
