Link Building Stragedy can anyone please give me advice
-
my site is www.in2town.co.uk Hi i hear a lot about having a linking structure in place and a linking stragedy but i am not really sure what i need to do even though i have spent months reading about it.
What i have been trying to do is to link as many of the pages within my site to the home page and i am now looking at linking pages in my site to around my site to different pages, just like <cite>en.wikipedia.org</cite>
So when i have a story on cheryl cole, i will make sure that i link from that story to another story i have on cheryl cole etc.
But i would like to know what else i need to do.
For my home page i want to rank for the following keywords
Lifestyle magazine
Lifestyle news
celebrity news
celebrity gossip
showbiz news
soap spoilers
I would also love suggestions for other keywords i should be aiming for, for the home page.
I find it hard as my site is a magazine site, so i do not have many places to put a description of each page of the site, so i would love some help on this and advice what i can do to let google know what my site is about.
If anyone can help with putting a linking stragedy in place and what things i should be doing to increase my ranking for important keywords, then that would be great
many thanks

james where you are saying about the main header, should i put an introduction there. i have been worried about putting an introduction as i fear it may look out of place.

tom can you give me an example of a good internal link structure. could you look at my site www.in2town.co.uk and let me know what i am doing wrong and write with reference to internal linking
-
Most things you have correct,
For the main header you want to link to terms which are keyword rich and site wide too, "celebrity gossip" is a good one.
Linking to other page is good but make sure you link within the content where possible too.
I would do some keyword research to find out keywords for the home page menu.
You can also link via the footer on the website so pick the most important pages/ keywords for the footer but do not go over board.
Further more when you finish working on internal linking I would also focus on external linking factors as they are important.

Internal links and inbound links are two different things. It is important to have a sound internal link structure it can improve navigation and user experience. It also gives search engines a better idea of your site. It is also good to link out to external, especially authoritative pages. However in order to rank well for your keywords you will need inbound links ie. other sites linking to pages or your website. The better and more authoritative inbound links you get the better will your pages rank.

Our clients Magento 2 site has lots of obsolete categories. Advice on SEO best practice for setting server level redirects so I can delete them?
Our client's Magento website has been running for at least a decade, so has a lot of old legacy categories for Brands they no longer carry. We're looking to trim down the amount of unnecessary URL Redirects in Magento, so my question is: Is there a way that is SEO efficient to setup permanent redirects at a server level (nginx) that Google will crawl to allow us at some point to delete the categories and Magento URL Redirects? If this is a good practice can you at some point then delete the server redirects as google has marked them as permanent?

Linking to AND canonicalizing to a page?
I am using cross domain rel=canonical to a page that is very similar to mine. I feel the page adds value to my site so I want users to go to it, but I ultimately want them to go to the page I'm canonicalizing to. So I am linking to that page as well. Anyone foresee any issues with doing this? And/or have other suggestions? Thanks.

404's in WMT are old pages and referrer links no longer linking to them.
Within the last 6 days, Google Webmaster Tools has shown a jump in 404's - around 7000. The 404 pages are from our old browse from an old platform, we no longer use them or link to them. I don't know how Google is finding these pages, when I check the referrer links, they are either 404's themselves or the page exists but the link to the 404 in question is not on the page or in the source code. The sitemap is also often referenced as a referrer but these links are definitely not in our sitemap and haven't been for some time. So it looks to me like the referrer data is outdated. Is that possible? But somehow these pages are still being found, any ideas on how I can diagnose the problem and find out how google is finding them?

Limit number of links in a page, how to build the menu?
Hi, One of the first SEOMoz tool recommand to me, is to avoid multiple links on the same page. This is fully true, i've more than 600 internal links placed in a menu on the header.
Technical SEO | | vdgvince
This means that each page contains these 600 links at least. User-experience wise, i need to keep this multi-level menu accessible. What would you suggest me ? => No-follow on the links would be useful and not penalizing (if i still have other do-follow links to these pages) => Javascript menu, so that i can't be crawled by google => Any other suggestion? Thank you in advance!0 -
No results with Link Analysis
So I have been working with a domain since November last year that still shows no improvement in regards to the link analysis. I am baffled because we have gotten them onto the first page on Google for a few of the keywords we are optimizing. Any help with this is greatly appreciated and I am a noob so definitely open to learning. Thanks in advance to all of you. Domain in question - www.modernportablerefrigeration.com Domain is currently on a shared server if that makes any difference. Cordially, Todd Richard admin@richfinn.org

Can spammy links affect indexing?
Meaning, if you have a lot of bad quality links (directories, blog comments) that are giving great rankings for some terms (on a homepage of a site), could the low quality of these links negatively affect the crawling frequency of interior pages or perhaps even give interior pages a ranking penalty?

Is anyone using Media Temple?
I'm looking to move 5 of my sites from Hostgator's shared servers to Media Temple's dedicated virtual servers. Anyone have experience with (mt)? I'm planning on adding a few more sites this year and several things they offer are attractive to me: A (virtually) dedicated environment: Faster websites, better user experience, plus I like having some control over my site's resources Scalability: I can add more resources easily (although not super cheap) Unique control panels for each site: More control for my tech savvy clients. Unique IPs for $1 a month: More linkjuice between my related sites. $50/month is a big jump from my $12/month Hostgator account but I'm thinking it will be worth it. Am I on the right track or is this a fool's errand?

Can I noindex most of my site?
A large number of the pages on my site are pages that contain things like photos and maps that are useful to my visitors, but would make poor landing pages and have very little written content. My site is huge. Would it be benificial to noindex all of these?
