Changing from Squarespace to Wordpress - Will I Lose My Rankings?
-
I have a friend who has a squarespace site that is giving him lots of trouble. For one, even though it is supposed to redirect to GreenSpaceConstruct.com...Bing and Yahoo don't seem to recognize this domain. Instead, they show greenlightconstruct.squarespace.com in the serp's. Oddly, Google shows the site as GreenSpaceConstruct.com.
The site is ranking well for some terms. I'm afraid that converting to wordpress will hurt his rankings in the short term. If bing and yahoo are crawling this squarespace domain, and he moves it...is there a way not to just completely lose the rankings?
Thanks for any thoughts. Much appreciated!
Josh

Without knowing more details, we are left to blindly guess at why Bing/Yahoo are not referencing the main site. If all is well with Google, I would start by logging into Bing Webmaster Tools.

Thanks so much for the response Ryan. Lots of good advice. His problem/opportunity isn't just changing architecture, unfortunately. If his site were already "hosted" at the main domain, then I wouldn't be afraid of him dropping from the rankings. But it seems that the search engines are recognizing the site.squarespace.com domain instead of the site.com domain that it is supposed to redirect to.
My sense is that the right thing for him to do long-term is to fix it, and make the necessary improvements to regain the position. It can't be good for potential customers to see the site.squarespace.com result in the serp's instead of his actual domain.

Changing from Squarespace to Wordpress - Will I Lose My Rankings?
Your website architecture has an impact on your rankings. Whenever you change your code, your rankings may change. It depends on many factors. A few examples:
-
how is each site coded? Does one site use HTML code with is better coded then the other which leads to the site being more crawlable by search engines?
-
will URLs be changing during the move? If so, there is at least a minor loss of link juice. This loss can be made up through various site improvements such as cleaner URLs.
-
does the new site resolve various issues which were hurting your SEO performance in the past?
-
does the new site offer new features which improve SEO?
-
do you have a quality WordPress developer? I am not asking if the developer may have built a WP site before, but rather does your developer regularly build WP sites? There is a big difference between a pure WP developer who loves building WP sites and that's all he/she does, to a developer who makes a WP site one month, then a Joomla site the next, then a Drupal site the month after.
Your question is kind of like asking "I am selling my Chevy and buying a Ford. Will my new Ford be a better car?". There are a lot of follow up questions which need to be asked and answered.

Are non-breaking spaces ( ) in keyword phrases bad for ranking
Hello all, I came across a tip for avoiding text orphans in responsive design by putting a non-breaking space between the last two words. While this works nicely, I was wondering if I did this inside of a keyword phrase, would it still rank equally as well? Or will it be viewed as separate phrases or terms? Thanks, Roman

Can a cloud based firewall affect my search ranking?
Hi, I recently implemented a firewall on my website to prevent hacking attacks. We were getting a crazy amount of people per day trying to brute force our website. I used the sucuri cloud proxy firewall service which they claim because of the super fast caching actually helps SEO. I was just wondering is this true? Because we're slowly falling further and further down the SERPS and i really don't know why. If not, is there any major google update recently I don't know about? Thanks, Robert

Switched from Wix to Wordpress dreaded hashtag URL
Recently took over managing a site for a non-profit which was using the dreaded Wix. Switched over to Wordpress but now Google still has the old URL's with the hashtag. Can't forward them in .htaccess and don't want to add javascript for fear of slowing down load time. I found a solution that seems like it will take hours and hours of work. I found the solution at http://www.thedriversgarage.com/web-technology/redirecting-hashbang-urls-wix-urls/ but it seems like it would take hours with all the URL's. I submitted an XML sitemap in Google webmaster tools. My question is, how serious could this effect SEO for my site? Google accepted the new sitemap but still has the old URL's in SERP. How long does this generally take to remove? Will the hashtag URL's penalize the site for duplicate content? If so is there a way to tell Google the homepage without hashtags is the page with original content? Sort of like the rel=canonical tag which I know wont work as the hashtag URL's all redirect to the homepage so they will all have the tag. Does Google ignore the hashtag? Could there even be a benefit to this, possibly the homepage getting more page authority due to the redirects? How serious is this? Thanks in advancing.

Yoast focus keywords for portfolio post types in WordPress
This one is for the WordPress optimization crowd! Portfolios are used to display work. I have a question about best seo optimization techniques. 1. Portfolios can be used to display many different types of work, for me it either original web designs from scratch, WordPress redesigns, or importing a current website into WordPress. What is the best practice for keywords for multiple portfolios that are in one category. for instance WordPress Redesign. If I have 5 WordPress redesign portfolio posts is it good practice to use WordPress redesign for all 5 portfolios or should they use variations? Yoast gets angry when the same focus keyword is used multiple times. 2. Should portfolios even be indexed? Since this is how I attract new customers I would think yes but am I giving too much exposure to my client and not enough to my business. I guess this will depend on titles and meta descriptions. A discussion on best practices here is what I am really looking for. What is your advice and opinion on the matter.

Image with 100% width/height - bad ranking?
Hi, we have some articles like this: http://www.schicksal.com/Orakel/Freitag-13 The main image has a width of 100% and a height of 100%. Today, I've discovered that GWT Instant Preview has some troubles with rendering the page. We have CSS rules to deliver the image with the right dimensions. If a bot like google is not sending any screen height / width we assume the screen size is 2560x1440. Does this harm the ranking of the page? (Content starts below the fold/image) What is a "default" screen size for google? How do they determine if something is "above the fold"? Any tips or ideas? Best wishes, Georg.
