Link exchanges

I have quite a few legal clients and 90% of my clients top competitors are doing 1:1 link exchanges and they have been doing it for years. Other industries Dont seem as prevalent.
I am just boggled every time someone says link exchanges don't work, will get penalized, or value is not passed. Its been working for my competitors....Legal SEO's seem to focus heavily on link exchanges.
I have yet to do link exchanges, but am about to get started with a resourceful directory of local businesses on my clients site. Some will be linking back, but not all. Fear of penalization is lurking in my mind.
Does anyone have any real data on this? Does anyone have an example of doing this properly and an example of how not to do it?
I appreciate any feedback you can give.

In the legal field you see it a lot. While I cannot point out any place where there is a penalty for it that I have seen I will tell you that without it I am able to add links and pass those above. The question becomes is it the links they are using or is it the content we are using, etc. that eventually moves us ahead?
I will leave it to you to decide, but in the legal marketing arena I have not seen any penalty for it. To my knowledge there is no benefit....

Value of Links? What is each link worth?
Morning Everyone, I just had this thought and wondered what everyone's opinions were in terms of link value in monetary terms. We'll assume for the purposes of this that the links come from contextually relevant sites and that the sites in question have got the Moz DA from being high quality and have a good quality incoming link profile. Its a bit of a theoretical question, but i guess imagine if the only way you could get links was to pay for them, what would they be worth to you. This is link value for SEO purposes, they will have in addition value from traffic from good sites, that no doubt varies wildly depending on topic. I assume everyone also agrees on: The first link from a domain is the most valuable High DA sites are worth more than low ones. So could anyone who has an opinion on the link value suggest a monetary value for links. Its really just using a monetary amount to see how best to target my time. Here is my example of what might be expected, but I am hoping people with more knowledge will perhaps correct it. Exchanging Follow/No-Follow Links with Parnter Site
Hi all, Wondering how Google would interpret the exchange of a no-follow link for a follow link between partner websites. I have a potential referral relationship with a business in my niche and we are hoping to cross-market. The goal would be for my link on his page to be a follow link, while the link to his business on my page would be a no-follow. Would my site get the benefit of a natural link in that scenario or would the two essentially 'cancel each other out' regardless of the follow/no-follow nature of the link? Spammy Links in MOZ but when I go to the external link I can't find a link to us
I was going to try to contact webmasters to see if they would remove some of our spammy links. I see alot of them in MOZ but when you go to the site our anchor text is not there. Is this good? How often does MOZ refresh external links. I am just starting out on building dome links for my site and a lot of the sites i am requesting to link to are requesting i put a link on my home page is this normal as i can imagine it would look quite messy,or is there a way to put it on but hide it or should i create a links page i am using a wordpress website using elegant themes i am a total newbie so not sure what i should do any feed back would be appreciated . thanks alan

Link Directories
Hi there, We're very shortly launching a new website so as part of our link strategy we will be linking to directories found with the Link Acquisition Assistant for various keyword searches. I was wondering at what point is it not worthwhile submitting to these directories with regards PA and DA? For example if a directory has a domain authority of 69 but the page authority for the keyword in question is only 1, would it be a waste of time? Cheers

Buying links
I have 2 websites to pay monthly to gain links from, number 1 is on the homepage of a directory, it has a PA of 90 and DA of 88.

the link will be on the right hand side along with 55 other featured sites.
these links are there throughout the whole site. number 2 is from a website with 20 max sponsored links on a page and will be one of the sub pages on the site with a PA of 74. How valuable if any would these links be? My current pa on the site i wish to send the links to is 26 Can i expect my PA to go up by much? Also i currently have 317 links from 7 root domains on my site will this effect the rank of the paid links? Thanks in advance0
