What is the best practice for using the same content on two pages?
-
I have two websites in a very similar niche(s)...I have good unique content article that I would like to use on both sites because it adds value to the visitor experience..
Example:
Science of Colors would be very useful for my seattle house painting paint colors page.
I want to have content so they do not need to leave the site to navigate to second site. Would the identical content trigger a penalty or would it be crawled, ignored, and not indexed.
Does having a rel=authorship on one site trump the site..Or is it a pile of BAD.

John,
Don't worry about google, write the story for your readers.
Target it to their needs, rewrite, paraphrase, add extra information for one group and different information for another group.
I'm not suggesting you only change a few words. I mean to really target the article for each group.
If you want to see how much google cares about duplicate content, try this search on google:
Romney wins Ohio, 4 other Super Tuesday states
Check those results and tell me that google cares about duplicate content.
If google really cared about having only one original story, none of those sites would get any search traffic.
You can see this for every single AP story, all day every day - those sites are paying a lot of money for AP content. If google was penalizing them for always having duplicate content, they would never show up in search results.

Alan, Thank you for your considered response.
If I only alter some text, and differentiated certain content like images and video do you believe that is enough to avoid a duplicate content potential P?

I thnk you mean in the one you don't want to rank, the canonical tag should point to the one that you do want to rank. The canonical tag points to the original.
John, there is another option. You can edit one of the stories so that it directly addresses the visitors to that particular site. You may have a different headline, different description. There may be additional text. there may be text removed. Also, you can use a photo or a graphic or a video in this one, that isn't in the other. What this does is tailor the story for those readers.

Do you want both the pages to show up in the SERPS ? If yes, no, this would hurt you. The only way to do this if you only want to do it for the users / user experience is to have a canonical tag pointing to the one that you don't want to rank in the search engines.

Privacy Policy Pages
When creating a privacy policy page- much of what needs to be added is legal information. This means privacy policy pages may be very similar to others' privacy pages in my niche. Are they all pretty much generic? We have a few different companies and I'm thinking we can have one created and then modify them per company? Is this correct? Mary

Duplicate Content & Tags
I've recently added tags to my blog posts so that related blog posts are suggested to visitors. My understanding was that my robot.txt was handling duplicate content so thought it wouldn't be an issue but after Moz crawled by site this week is reported 56 issues of duplicate content in my blog. I'm using Shopify, so I can edit the robot.txt file but is my understanding correct that if there are 2 or more tags then they will be ignored? I've searched the Shopify documents and forum and can't find a straight answer. My understanding of SEO is fairly limited. Disallow: /blogs/+

Why is content getting longer?
I find it odd that with the way life is today -- the gotta-have-it-now, instant gratification, can't hold someone's attention span for longer than 3 seconds -- why Google is wanting content to be REALLY long?? I've read articles saying content should be as long as 2,000 words per page. This just seems nuts to me. No one wants to read anymore. Look at how short Twitter posts are and how videos are so prevalent now. Any thoughts?

Duplicate Content - Joint Press Releases
One of my clients posts Joint Press Releases with it's partners on their blog. The client's partner posts the exact same press release on their website. I think this must meet the Duplicate Content flag... does anyone have experience in dealing with this? Sarita

How to Get Rid of Duplicate Content Captured on Article Lists
We have a ton of articles and blog posts on our site. Currently, we display summary lists of articles that contain the first paragraph of the article in the summary list. However, in my reports, this is coming back as duplicate content with the full article itself. How do I fix this? Ex: article main page- http://www.robots.com/articles/10 First article on that page- http://www.robots.com/articles/viewing/grippers-for-robots (which shows up as duplicate content with the main artilce page). With our blogs, we have the most recent 5 blogs (in the same summary format) listed on our main blog page. We then have categories that people can sort by. But again, this is causing us duplicate content because those pages show the first paragraph of the blogs related to that category. Ex: blog main page- http://www.robots.com/blog. First blog listed on that page- http://www.robots.com/blog/viewing/robots-and-automation-bringing-jobs-back-to-the-united-states (which then shows as duplicate content with the main blog page). And then you can also select categories to see related topics: http://www.robots.com/blog/category/buying-a-robot which is showing as duplicate content also. Help! How can I prevent this? Thanks! We get 30-40 jobs every month which we post on a) our job portal b) other job portals (like monster, career builder, Naukri , etc). How do avoid content duplication? Integration of content on other sites
(by Google Traductor) Hello, we are able to make agreements with sites of good quality and reputation to integrate our classified ads for agropeuariosector on the websites of these companies. We fear that thesesites begin to index all this content and begin to compete with us in organic positioning. On the other hand this would generateduplicate content? That strategy will be applied in order to do so. Greetings and thanks!
