Does this count as Copied Content ?

Hi,
we are publishing news on our website blog. In the news we use excerpts from other websites but do mention the source like "according to XYZ news source" etc.
Does it count as copied content as sometime copyscape shows alsmot 30% duplicated content due to inclusion of references from different sources in our news stories ?

It is not that copysace always shows 30% match . Normally it is between 8% to 15% but the source is always mentioned with proper details.
Please tell me if it counts as duplicated content from Search Engine point of view or not. Are Google Algorithms intelligent enough to understand that copied content is used only for reference and not to steal anyone's work ? Can google understand the intent of copied content if source of original content is also mentioned ?

You make an excellent point. I am not sure about it legally though (will ask one of our clients). I do believe on a news source, if you give attribution, it is still doable. Again, I am not an attorney. I just believe there is a public domain issue at some point on the news. (All news is re reported after the first incidence).
The 30% he was referring to regards duplicate content so is 30% of the content on his page, not the content attributable to the source.But, you raise a very good point. Thanks,

I don't think that Creative Commons license applies unless they explcitly state that on the news site.
For example, CNN.com says "All Right Reserved" at the bottom of their page. If you check out the terms and conditions, it says "You may not modify, publish, transmit, participate in the transfer or sale, create derivative works, or in any way exploit, any of the content, in whole or in part. You may download copyrighted material for your personal use only."
MSNBC.com is even more clear on their Terms and Conditions: "You may not modify, copy, reproduce, republish, upload, post, transmit, or distribute in any way any material from this site including code and software without express permission from MSNBC or as permitted inReprint Requests ."
I'm not an expert, but taking 30% of their content does not seem to meet their rules for reproducing their content no matter if you're attributing the source or not. Perhaps a quote or two from an article is fine, but 30% sounds like a lot.
Perhaps the sites that Shahzad is using do follow Creative Commons, but many of the major news sites do not seem to do that.

Since you are giving attribution: "but do mention the source like "according to XYZ news source" etc." You are likely following the creative commons rules since you are copying from another news source. Here is where you can check : creative commons licenses
I don't think using 30% from another source for a news piece will present many problems for duplicate content but would think you are reaching a limit or close to it.

How do you find your ideas for content
Morning Mozzers, We have finally come to the point where we can start to focus on making good original content. We were wondering how you guys come up with ideas for your content. We are currently doing lots of keyword research to gather ideas and subject areas. But we are struggling with 'angles of attack'. Being an eCommerce site it is easy to do lots of "The 5 best products for this" type of content. But we feel there is limited value in these especially if we want to gain links to our articles in future as valued content. Duplicate Legal Content
Oftentimes lawyer websites will publish laws (codes, statutes, regulations, case law, etc). They add no value to the text, it's just copy pasted. Therefore, the same text/content may be on potentially hundreds of websites. Does google interpret this as duplicate content, or does it recognize government content as special? I want to have the laws on my website as well, however I am debating whether to add no follow tags or not. Or I'm thinking about adding value to the content by breaking down the specific law. However, even then at least 50% of the content on the page will still be the law, and I'm not sure if that is enough to be considered duplicate content.

How to Get Rid of Duplicate Content Captured on Article Lists
We have a ton of articles and blog posts on our site. Currently, we display summary lists of articles that contain the first paragraph of the article in the summary list. However, in my reports, this is coming back as duplicate content with the full article itself. How do I fix this? Ex: article main page- http://www.robots.com/articles/10 First article on that page- http://www.robots.com/articles/viewing/grippers-for-robots (which shows up as duplicate content with the main artilce page). With our blogs, we have the most recent 5 blogs (in the same summary format) listed on our main blog page. We then have categories that people can sort by. But again, this is causing us duplicate content because those pages show the first paragraph of the blogs related to that category. Ex: blog main page- http://www.robots.com/blog. First blog listed on that page- http://www.robots.com/blog/viewing/robots-and-automation-bringing-jobs-back-to-the-united-states (which then shows as duplicate content with the main blog page). And then you can also select categories to see related topics: http://www.robots.com/blog/category/buying-a-robot which is showing as duplicate content also. Help! How can I prevent this? Thanks! Duplicate content via syndication?
I have a full text RSS feed of my blog available for users with RSS readers. A few sites have said they would like to republish the unedited feed on their site (so my blog postings show up on their sites with links back to my site embedded). I'm wondering if this is a good/bad idea (to let them republish my postings) and/or if I should do anything in the feed to protect myself from an SEO point of view? Am I at risk of some kind of duplicate content penalty from Google, or will Google figure out that I'm the original source (which would be good) since the blog postings have links back to my site?
