Opinions on Building Own Blog Network (Private Use Only)
-
With the lose of buildmyrank and many other services like this on the verge of extension I was looking at building a small blog network of my own for private use. Adsense and also 3 way linking.
I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this? I know this takes a ton of time to build but if anyone who's done something like this and wouldn't mind sharing some of their tips I would greatly appriciate it.
Quick Question
Is it safe to register say 30 domains under the same person? Or would it be wiser to use whois protection to guard the names?Anyone else want to contribute their 2c to this strategy please be my guest.

You think that's costly, try doing it the old fashion way.
-
Didn't think of getting bloggers on board but rather outsource the writing and running it all. Did you use your network to link back to your own sites?
-
Yes its amazing how BMR goes down and everyones panicked. I guess the moral of the story is link building the old fashion way is always the best way.
Anyways I understand that if you have your own small network of blogs linking to each other is not beneficial and without link juice its means nothing but I had another strategy in mind by not using the blogs to link to your own sites but rather 3 way linking outside of your network using the blog as leverage.
At the end of the day its a long road ahead and can be costly to run a bunch of blogs let alone 30+.
Thanks for the 3 great links Nakul especially the one about google making liars out of good seo guys.

It's only a matter of time. I know it's frustrating. Read this great article from Wil Reynolds - How Google Makes Liars Out of the Good Guys in SEO

There is a difference between links and linkjuice.
Links themselves are worthless, it is the linkjuice that does something for you.
Let's say that you make 30 blogs and toss them up to the server. Each blog has a few links to your website.
What will you get from that? NOTHING
Why? Because before your blogs can pass any linkjuice to your primary site those blogs must have linkjuice flowing into them from outside of your network. Until you have that your blogs will not be indexed and because they are not indexed they will have nothing to pass on to your primary website.
For your scheme to work you need a source of linkjuice from outside of your own network of websites.
If you can come up with that linkjuice it would be a lot smarter to simply connect it directly to your primary website instead of filtering it through a bunch of orphan blogs.
Lots of people think that they can manufacture links. Yes, you can manufacture links but there is only one place to get linkjuice - and that source is outside of your own network of websites.

One of my sites competes against a web developer who set up a network of approximately 150 sites. Most (probably 80%) are in the same business. The other 20% or so are geographically relevant. Crap sites (no blogs or useful info) but they link to each other. Developer also set up several directories with only his sites and the name of the city and the service in the domain names. Works surprisingly well for the owners of his sites.
How long can this continue before it topples? Worth reporting?
-
Wow, every since BMR (BuildMyRank.com) got booted down, lots of Private Network questions are out there. In simple words, private networks specially when owned by the same person and / or link to the same network of sites are identifiable by automatic algorithms (Think what those Phd's are doing at Google).
Also, you might want to read these similar questions 1, 2.
Keep in mind, you are still prone to risk and whois protection or not, if a human can find it, patterns in linking can also help them identify themselves as networks. Moreover, if these sites are not strong themselves, how are they going to provide value ? so now, you will have to worry about getting links for those 30 sites as well to strengthen them. Otherwise, if there's no inbound links to those 30 sites, there's not much link juice they have to pass.
Makes sense ? I hope that helps.

I tried this a few years ago.
The strategy was to find good writers and help promote them and get them into news writing and reporting.
It wasn't about links, other than linking to stories in the newspaper, to get more readers.
It was a miserable failure.
It is a lot of work and you have to find people who are interested, get them fired up and keep them interested.
We got a couple of writers and we have one lone blogger left. I shut down the rest of the network.
We probably went about it the wrong way, but I had someone managing it, who we paid, but it just never worked out. If you consider this, you really need a lot of things in place, a great plan, a fired-up evangelist, and ways to build and increase interest.
You could go out and find people who have done this and seek their opinion and advice.

Are there any downsides to using a canonical tag temporarily?
I'm working on redesigning our website. One of the content types has a main archive page (/success-stories) containing all of the success stories (written by graduates of our program). Because we plan to have success stories for other people (non-graduates), I'm using category hierarchies (/success-stories/graduates and success-stories/nonprofits, for example). It will go one level deeper to organize graduates by graduation year (/success-stories/graduates/%year%). I think this will work out well. However, we won't have non-graduate success stories for a little while, probably at least a few weeks, which means that /success-stories and /.../graduates indices will contain the same content for a while. So my question is this: Will it hurt to use a canonical tag that points to /success-stories/graduates as the authority until the main archive page contains more than just graduates? Or would it be better to use a 302 redirect from /success-stories to /.../graduates until more diverse content is added?

Company Blog at a different URL
Ok, I have been doing a lot of work over the past 6 months, disavowing low quality links from spammy directories to our company website, etc. However, my efforts seem to have had a negative, not positive effect. This has brought me back to reconsidering what we are doing as we have lost a good amount of traction on the nationwide Google rankings specifically. Considering our company blog - platinumcctv(dot)net - we have used this blog for a long time to inform customers of new products, software developments and then to provide them links to purchase those components. Last week, I revamped the nearly default wordpress theme to another on a piece of advice. However, someone told me that all of our links should be nofollow, even though it is a company blog because we have many links coming from this domain, and it could be found as spammy. Potato/Potato - But before I start the tedious task of changing every link to no follow on a whim, i searched a lot, but have found no CLEAR substantiation of this. Any ideas? Other recommendations appreciated as well! Platinum-CCTV(dot)com

Sidewide footer links to latest blog posts
Dear Friends I hope you can answer my questions. We are launching a new site and on the footer (sidewide) we list all new blog posts (limit 5 links - blog title), do you think we have any problems with that part of the website? I am concerned because all new blog post title will appear on all pages' footer and it will be marked as spammed. We just want visitors to be noticed about new blogs post on our site. Thank you,Tran

Canonical links apparently not used by google
hi, I do have an ecommerce website (www.soundcreation.ro) which in the last 3 months had a drop in the SERP. Started to look around in GWT what is happening. Google is reporting a lot of duplicate meta-tags (and meta-titles problem). But 99% of them had already canonical links setted. I tried to optimize my product listings with the new "prev", "next" tags and introduced also the "view-all" canonical link to help Google identify the appropiate product listing pages. SeoMoz is not reporting thos duplicate meta issues. Here is an example of the same page with different links, but with the same common canonical and reported by GWT "duplicate title tag": http://www.soundcreation.ro/chitare-chitari-electroacustice-cid10-pageall/http://www.soundcreation.ro/chitare-chitari-electroacustice-cid10/http://www.soundcreation.ro/chitare-chitari-electroacustice-cid10_999/http://www.soundcreation.ro/chitare-electro-acustice-cid10_1510/What could be the issue?- only that gwt is not refreshing as should be, keeping old errors?- if so, then there is an other serious issue because of why our PR is dropping on several pages?- do we have other problem with the site, which ends up with google penalizing us? Thank you for your ideas!

Duplicating an article I wrote on an external blog
Hi, I wrote a blog article on another site. I would like to add the article to my site as well and would like to know the best way to do it. If I duplicate the article that I wrote would I then risk getting a penalty for duplicate content? If so, then what is the best way for me to include the article on my site for the benefit of my readers, but not lead to the duplicate content problem? Would it be better to use a canonical tag? Or to noindex the page? If I use the canonical tag, am I helping to make the article on the external blog stronger? Where is I use the noindex tag I am not helping my site nor that article I think, is that right? Last question, if I offer the copy of the article on my site and use the canonical or noindex tag then my site does not receive any direct benefit from the article for SEO. In other words the article wont appear in the search index with a link to my site. What about the comments that people write on the article on my site? That is unique content which may have great questions or points. I want to ensure those can be indexed properly. If I noindex the page I lose out. If I canonicalize (is that a word?) the page then I don't know if will send search results based on those comments to the external blog where that information (the comments from my site) does not exist. Thank you for any help to better understand this part of seo.

HTML5 and using multiple H1 tags
Hi All, Our dev team have just asked me a very interesting question........ Within the context of an HTML5 page, where it is supported and encouraged to use multiple H1 tags, will the use of multiple H1 tags be detrimental to SEO? or does Google fully understand how HTML5 works and therefore not penalise a website for using multiple H1 tags? I have an opinion on this that if it helps usability and user experience then it is likely that it will be good for SEO. It would be really good to hear views of people who have tried this or have decided against it! Thanks
