Google Sitelinks
-
We have an e-commerce site that has about 50k pageviews of our main shop page every week. However in our Google sitelinks we have one for 'Shop'. However, for the Shop sitelink Google is linking to a random URL that we have never & would never use as a URL and not to our Shop page. I can't work out why Google would pick up this random url as we have so many links etc to the main shop page. Why are they not linking to the right page?
I have blocked that url in webmaster tools and done a redirect but I want to understand why it happened in the first place. It included 'swedish+fish' so it seems weirdly spammy?!
Any thoughts would be really helpful (and I am only mildly techy).
Many thanks

Aha - thank you so much. I thought I had already checked my internal links but double-checked again after your response and you were completely correct. There was a horrendous error with our code that led an example link being added to every page rather than the correct one. Thank you helping me look in the right direction to find the solution!

It's a bit hard to tell without seeing the specific case, but the first thing that comes to mind is a ton of links to that URL - either bad internal links or inbound/external links created accidentally or maliciously. If Google sees the URL linked to prominently, they could decide to treat that URL as legitimate (even without a page).
Does the bad URL 404 correctly? It's possible the URL is out there but it's resolving with a 200 or a weird redirect, and Google isn't recognizing that the page doesn't exist. One of the first things I'd do is run a header checker against the bad URL and see how it's resolving. For example, a tool like:
-
Oh wow. When you said "non-existent" I didn't know you meant literally. That's crazy. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
-
Well, I have good news and bad news.
The bad news is that I can't be TOO much help. The good news is that you're not alone.
Just last week I wrote a post on the SEOmoz blog about this exact issue. You can check it out here.
If you can figure out exactly why it happened then definitely let me know and I'll give you a big high five.

Meta description issue on Google
Hello, I have a small issue on Google with our Meta Description tag not always being properly displayed. If you search for the term: Globe Car (in two words), everything is being displayed properly: http://screencast.com/t/YQCUkJnk Now do the same search for the term GlobeCar (in one word) and the meta tag set into our homepage seems to be totallly ignored and Google is now displaying something that is generated from out of their hat: http://screencast.com/t/K0KeeRGSgspV Anyone has an idea what would cause this? Thanks!

Links below linking (not sitelinks)
Hi All, Please can you let me know the name and / or point me at an article / blog / directory on how best to achieve additional links under a search engine listing (I don't mean site links) e.g. I do a search for 'home insurance' on Google.co.uk and under the listing for Compare the Market it has - home insurance, building insurance and landlords insurance. Thanks for your help!

Google.com
Hi We are managing a .com site for a client working on getting the site ranking. The site is hosted in the US. The content is rich, deep and unique. The site is in a competitive market but had begun ranking top 50 for a selection of keywords and we could see many more in the top 100. The site is now going backwards and only has a few keywords ranking top 50 and all the others have disappeared from the rankings all together. Any thought as to what could cause this. The site is managed from the Uk but as mentioned is hosted in the US. No penguin issues as all content unique, rich, relevant and fresh. SEO is also managed from the UK. Thoughts

Schema.org support by google
Hi, Some time ago I have implemented schema.org product schema on all of my product pages. The rich snippet tool provided by Google shows that the relevant info is extracted (they say that preview is not supported so no preview there) My issue is that I can't see any rich snippet displayed for any on my searches, which leads me to think that there is something wrong with my implementation. sample page: www.funstuff.co.il/tabid/62/ProdID/933/products.aspx [editor's note: adult oriented content, NSFW] Any one has an Idea? Thanks, Asaf

So if you are AB testing two pages: index.html and indexB.html Shouldn't I nofollow indexB.html? It has all the same content, just a different design.

Google Quality Algorithm Update
I'm curious what correlations or impacting variables SEO professionals have found that have increased or decreased ranking with the most recent algorithm change. It appears that many innocent sites have fallen victim, especially larger sites. It also appears that Google is maintaining that specific sites were not targeted... Meaning there must be proven characteristics.
