Is social networking really worth all the effort?

Call me old fashioned, but I can’t understand the buzz about social networking, I really don't get it, who in their right mind spends their valuable time conversing with a bunch of narcissists, chattering about what’s on TV, funny pictures and bragging about what they’ve done or achieved, it all seems so phoney to me. My site is reasonably popular, I get a rough 50/50 split of my visitors from referrals and organic and an infinitesimally small amount of traffic from social – Oh yes I hear you say,” that’s because you haven’t fully embraced social networking.” But here’s the thing, my social traffic doesn’t come from me at all, it comes from followers of my own social network (forums and user of my software liking and sharing my products and content), who have kindly shared on my behalf. Now when I visit Analytics to study the data from social traffic I find that it gives a huge bounce, 100% from Facebook, 93% from Twitter and 79% from LinkedIn, when my average is just 39%. The same applies to time spend on each page, less than a minute for all of the social sites, when my average in close to 7 minutes. So ok, social networking for traffic is a complete no go, let’s look at it from the perspective of out reaching. How can I break into that? I hate TV, I don’t find pictures of cats funny and I’m modest and humble, how can I possibly even begin to converse with these people? After using Twonk I got followed back by a good amount of users, but had to delete most because of the complete crap they were sharing, do I really want to know that someone ate lasgne for dinner, read about the top ten english railway stations, or what colour lego brick is someones favourite! Honestly I’m not trying to be funny with this post, and no offence to anyone here, but I just don’t get social networking, I’d love to but it seems a complete waste of my time and effort.

Anyone just see a massive drop in URL Likes on their websites?

I just saw a big drop in Facebook URL Likes on my clients' websites. Has anyone else seen this too? Looks like Facebook is cleaning out the SPAM Likes.

E-commerce Website, 1 year on, what are the next steps?

Hi all, I'm sure i'm at the stage most people find themselves: • Site designed and built
• Products added to online store
• Basic SEO carried out, titles, tags, H1, etc
• Site has been running for almost a year and gain a little momentum http://www.internationalcheese.co.uk Now it's time to turn my attention to pro-active link-building and marketing of the site in order to build traffic and sales. My question to you guys is: What's the best way to go about implementing this next step? I have a list of links from competitor sites via OSE, what do I do with them? I try to post regularly on twitter and Facebook, but they rarely make an impact - i guess i need to look at the content i'm posting - how do i generate more engaging content? Your help is appreciated, any comments suggestions or feedback on the site design, structure, usability, links etc would be appreciated. **Can anyone share any real-world examples specifically relating to e-commerce businesses? ** The site is built and hosted on the Shopify platform which i find a pleasure to use. Does promoting a new page on twitter/facebook help it get indexed faster?

I know this probably won't matter much to people who get crawled on a regular basis, but for those of us who don't, does promoting a new page on social media help it get indexed faster with google? My site rarely gets crawled, but I've recently been adding new content. When I add new content I started to promote it on facebook/twitter and I do get minimal traffic from it. I noticed that a couple of the pages seem to be indexing quicker than pages normally do for me, although I'm not sure if it's because I recently migrated to WP or what..? I know T/FB are no follow sites, but is there a chance that promoting a page may contribute to the pages getting indexed? Thanks for any insight you can shed on the matter. It's more for curiosities sake than anything else. Pete S.

Linkbuilding vs. Social -- Allocating scarce resources.

I just watched Rand's latest webinar on the end of search without social. It was very timely for me because I've been putting a lot of thought into how allocate my available person-hours. It is clear that SEO these days necessitates both linkbuilding and social. But how much of each? (50%/50%?, 80%/20%?, etc.) -For the DIY small business owner (<10 hours per week available for SEO) -For SEO savvy web business (~20 hours per week available of SEO) -For in-house or other full time SEO's (30+ hours available) Clearly it depends on a lot of other factors, I'm just looking for a good rule of thumb that can be adjusted according to the business.
