Keyword Search - another site bypassed me and they are not ranked well...
-
I was trying to optimize the keywords "music for kids" . This is a no brainer because my URL is "musicforkids" My On-Page Report Card for "music for kids" gives my site a "A". The on page report card for the other site gets an "F". But the other site comes up number ONE in the organic Google search and my site comes up number three. The two sites above me receive a crappy on page Keyword report for the key words "music for kids" but they still come up above me for that search term. What's the deal?
-
Interesting. The thing that threw me with my site is that the sites higher than mine had an "F" grade for everything. It seems it's just the links to it that make the difference. I emailed the other site (which was number one) and the person emailed back saying that he didn't even know what SEO was and that he hasn't updated the site for months! What the heck?

I have noticed a lot of this happening where sites that are not even properly built yet over taking other sites. I noticed a site the other week that had a tiny bit of text saying new website coming soon but it was on page one of google and it was number two in google, i was shocked. But when i checked out the links it had, i could not understand and think it is a bit underhand. they had hundreds and hundreds of links.
I also saw this happen last year and the site ten months later was still not built but was ranking much higher than other sites that had better content

Great attitude. That's the first thing needed to attack that type of SERP.

Best of luck Gary! You're on the right track!

Thanks Phil,
It seems I have a create content road ahead of me. I thought being a great site selling quality instruments would be enough. I do see the sites which are above me are purely educational sites or pbs site with no retail involved. I will get to work and map my improvement!

It all comes down to the number of links pointing to the sites, as well as the quality (and relevancy) of the sites linking to you all.
After a quick look, your site has a domain authority of 29 with link from 85 domains.
The competitors that rank ahead of you have a domain authority of at least 50 and have hundreds or thousands of sites pointing to them.
On page factors are becoming less and less important. To see a recent study, check out this article: http://www.theopenalgorithm.com/correlation-data/on-page-factors/
I suggest you create some awesome content that people will love, and then use that to do some link building. It will probably be a long process, but also a very rewarding one. All things considered, I think you should feel very good about where you rank now. Keep on keepin' on and move up those SERPs!

Improve rankings
Hello, My website is www.polarpos.com I am trying to improve its ranking for "pos system" my main competitor is: www.barcodesinc.com I have looked through their backlinks but they seem to be random, not many being particularly specific to "pos systems". So what can I do to better compete with this website regarding their keyword? Where can I get the backlinks to my website that would help it for that ranking and in what way?

Ecommerce seo - competitors are using spammy links to rank HELP
After setting up SEO Moz and whilst waiting for it to crawl my site i have checked out my competitors who are ranking for the keywords i am going after. It appears from what i can see in OSE that they are ranking with back links from spammy looking sites and lots of exact match anchor text. I have tried to match a few links with what they have currently without getting myself into anything too spammy but i really don't want to follow how they have done it exactly. The niche i am in is pretty boring but the rewards are great but i am finding creating content and distributing it correctly difficult which is why i need some help. My site is roughly 9 months old and the product descriptions are hand written trying to give as much info as possible with a hint of personality so no cookie cutter back of the box descriptions. i have matched a few of the links from competitors which weren't too spammy and as relevant as i could get to my niche, i have also created articles for some article directories - all of which isn't really getting me very far and i am running out of ideas on how to create new content & the types of new content to help me get back links naturally. If any of you friendly guys could offer me some assistance in setting up a basic seo campaign which would help me target my keywords i would be very much in your debt

Turning off personalized search
Hello, Is there any way to turn off personalized search in Google. I used to add &pws=0; to the search but that doesn't seem to work anymore. Thanks!

Identify keywords certain sites target
Hello, I've been asked to identify what keywords a group of blogs/communities might target so that we might gain some insight for our own SEM purposes. It's been several years since I used SEOmoz's tools, so they have changed a lot. I couldn't remember if you had such a tool, but it appears you do not--or at least not that I am finding. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of such a tool where I can input a subdomain, and have a report stating which keywords are the ones the domain rates highly for. To be clear: I'm not looking for a traffic estimation or anything; simply a breakdown of what keywords a specific page or domain support most. P.S. I did a search on here for certain terms like "competitive keyword targets" and so forth, and saw no matching QA. I'm sorry if there is a duplicate! Thanks,

What's the best way to discover my business and search competitors?
I am trying to figure out who the real competitors are for the domain that I have been recently handed. Other than the client's references, which I don't think are the real competition (they are his benchmarks), how do I go about discovering the true competition? What the simplest, most effective way to go about discovering my business and search competitors? Given that this is a web portal, aren't both of the latter the same?

SEOMoz bar shows competitors ranking higher in SERPS with less Moztrust and Mozrank?
We are targeting the term "wholesale fireworks" we are currently on page two and just completed some on page optimization. I noticed using the Mozbar that the SERP results on the first page show a site with near zero page rank, Moztrust, domain trust, etc.. It is steadily number two in SERPS. Our site is just as strong or stronger on these ratings as anyone on the first page. How is it possible that we are still hanging out on page 2?
