Where to link to? .com or extension
-
Hi everyone.
Just a quick question as its really confusing me.
When link building it appears I have been linking unknowingly it seems to 2 different web address's
http://www.chamonixfirst.com and http://www.chamonixfirst.com/en/home/
I'm very new to this but if you look at the link info for these two different address they have different scores. Have i just halved all the link building i have done so far?
When you search for us on the net its the .com site that appears but the .com/en/home/ has better trust etc.
So i guess the question is, for future linking which address should we be linking to ? .com or .com/en/home/
Many thanks
Phil

"Linking root domains" is a metric we use because it correlates better with ranking than your overall link count. In other words, if you have 100 links from todd.com (even on different, non-root URLs), that counts a lot less for SEO than having links from 100 different root domains. It doesn't necessarily matter where the link is from the home-page or a deep page (home pages tend to have higher PR, but just on average). What we're really interested in is how many different/unique domains link to your site.

I tend to agree with Todd that it's better to use your root level "/" URL for the home-page, as Google can get quirky when you target a deeper page. That said, if you're using a proper 301-redirect, most of your current link-juice should be consolidated. Ideally, I'd use the root level, but your current configuration may not be causing any serious problems (and switching always carries a little short-term risk).

Hi Phil,
www.todd.com <- linking root domain
www.phil.com <- linking root domain
www.todd.com/awesome <-linking page on the root domain
blog.todd.com <- subdomain linkFeel free to private message me if you have any more questions.

Thanks Todd, thats great.
I hope you dont mind but i have 1 more question to pick your brain
If www.todd.com links to me that is a root domain linking to me right?
If www.todd.com/links links to me does that also count as a root domain link? Or is that a sub domain link
thanks in advance
Phil

Hello,
You are using a 301 redirect from here:
to here:
http://www.chamonixfirst.com/en/home/
301's reduce the link juice by 1-10% according to Matt Cutts. It's not that big of deal, but I'd recommend picking a version to link to and sticking to that 1 version from here on out. I'd advise you to switch the 301 redirect around from what you currently have. I'd be better to have http://www.chamonixfirst.com as the primary version of the URL because most of the people that link to you (natural links) will use that version over http://www.chamonixfirst.com/en/home/ (unless they go to your website and copy-paste). You only have 33 linking root domains, so it's better to get it right now before it's too late. If you had 3x the number of linking root domains I'd probably just advise you to keep it the way you have it. Make sure all of these versions use a 301 to your primary version if you have them:

We're looking at providing SEO for a website that has the majority of its incoming links from websites created solely to provide links. Few have bad spam rankings. How worried should I be about those links?
The majority of incoming links to a prospect's website are from website pages apparently created solely to provide links to the website. Few have high spam scores. The sites linking to the main site have versions of blogs with linked text. They seem to be providing positive SEO value now, but I'm concerned they might get noticed and hurt the main site in the future.

Sitewide links
Hi there, We operate about a dozen websites that are part of the same parent company. All these websites are in the same vertical, and link among each other in the footer section. The anchor for each link is the brand name, so we are merely doing it to show what other products the parent company has to offer. My question is: do you think this is still advisable, or it might trigger a penalty? Also, what would you choose between: Sitewide footer links from each site to the other sites. A single footer link on the homepage from each site to the other sites. A presentation page on each website, one click away from the homepage, which presents the company's other websites. Thanks.

About Link Earning?
I own an e-commerce store and I am get started with my SEO strategy. I know content is extremely important when it comes to link building, however for an e-commerce store what can I do as far as content. So far my only idea is blog posts. It's a furniture store so videos are really hard to do. The blog posts relate to home decor and interior design. My question is if people are going to be linking to my blog, will this help my website rank for product terms? The blog is part of the website, websitename.com/blog.

Advetorial links
How do you scientifically value advertorial links. I have a site who is willing to buy advertorial in large online sites which will contain links. (I would prefer they invested in content on their own site). The DA on these sites is universally extremely strong. the PA of the examples I've seen is pretty low. The site has strong DA matching it's main competition and is performing pretty well in terms of ranking. Question: how do you value this kind of link in terms of the amount of £ the publications want to charge. Anybody have a formula or a logical process which would provide solid advice rather than don't infringe Google's T&C's which I've already mentioned to them. Any thoughts appreciated.

What link would be better?
Okay, I found a niche blog that has a google PR6. They have a ton of dollow blogroll links, as well as a ton of internal links on homepage. Would I be better off getting the blogroll link? Getting a link in an existing post with a lower PR? Getting an advertiorial written with a link in it? I just don't know. It has a domain authority of 33 currently. It's not a cheap link for blogroll. The in-post, or advertorial isn't too bad, but not cheap either. Thanks in advance.

Link Directory
I am not an SEO expert by any means, just trying to improve the ranking of my own personal real estate site. Are directory links good for backlinks, or are they a waster of time?
