How to control link flow on a webshop
-
I am looking for a best practice link structure for a webshop. Say you run a webshop where the front page should rank for 1-2 keywords and then there are 5-10 categories which are more popular and has a higher profit than the remaining 20-50 categories.
Will it be wise to let the 20-50 categories link to the 5-10 more profitable categories if possible or should the structure just treat all the categories as equal and hence not let any link juice flow from the less profitable categories up to the more profitable categories.
I hope the question is clear enough.
Also if you could share any thoughts on how you structure your webshops it would be great.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Like in real estate not all properties are equal as importance. So if all properties are under the same ownership selling one will bring more profit if the expense to build it is the same but if in a better area will automaticly cost more.
In my opinion is the same with any e-shop. Even if you have all categories on the same level some will more important then others like you also pointed out. In those cases it make sense to put more effort and also to channel link juice to more important ones.
Personally when I work on e-shops I always split the products and categories on Tirs of importance. And based on those tiers I optimize then and also use those tiers for inner and external link strategies. Deep links from out side are always point to those tier 1 pages.
There is no point in linking to Tier 3 or more from important pages - unless those are related and it make sense for the user flow, funnel to use those. ( visit those pages) .
To sum up, again my personal opinion, is that inetrnal linking is important and there is no point in dealing with all pages in the same way. if you manage to channel the internal links to more important pages you will get a very huge advantages in rankings with the most important pages.
Hope it helps.

Internal Link Rank Flow
I've read in many articles that pages can "pass" rank to other pages internally. Is anyone aware of any well done internal linking case studies which confirm this? If my homepage has the strongest Page Authority, would linking to another page deeper into my website from my homepage boost my rank for the deeper page in Google (more so than linking to the deep page from a page with lower page authority)?

Link Anchor Text
When we have run a Open Site Explorer analysis on our own site, it says that for all our internal links the Link Anchor Text is 'Help with logging in' I am a bit confused as to why it shows that. That text does appear in the header of the page, but is not the first piece of text. Why is it happening on our site?

Dofollow and Nofollow links
What is the difference between dofollow and nofollow links? I know that some sites/blogs only let you post nofollow links. In such a case how do I know if a comment I posted on a certain site will be a nofollow or dofollow? How about big traffic sites such as Huff Post. Do they only allow nofollow links?

Too Many On-Page Links on a Blog
I have a question about the number of on-page links on a page and the implications on how we're viewed by search engines. After SEOmoz crawls our website, we consistently get notifications that some of our pages have "Too Many On-Page Links." These are always limited to pages on our blog, and largely a function of our tag cloud (~ 30 links) plus categories (10 links) plus popular posts (5 links). These all display on every blog post in the sidebar. How significant a problem is this? And, if you think it is a significant problem, what would you suggest to remedy the problem? Here's a link to our blog in case it helps: http://wiredimpact.com/blog/ The above page currently is listed as having 138 links. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks so much. David

Weird href - is it still a follow link?
On many publication sites I have noticed weird links like I have never seen before <a <="" span="">href="http://test.com" onclick="linkClick(this.href)">Test</a> Are these still follow links? Is the only thing that determines a no follow link "rel=nofollow"? So as long as the link doesn't have that, it's good to go? Why might they have used a link like this? For tracking?

Canonical Link Quesiton
I wrote an article that is a page article, but would also be a very good blog post - So my question is two things: 1. If i post it as a static page and syndicate it as a blog post and have it as a canonical link to the page, google will read see the blog and read the page _url as the one with credit correct? In turn not dinging me for duplicate content. 2. Given if the above statement is correct, should I write the blog and put it on my static page referencing the blog or the way i have it as a static page with the blog using a canonical reference back to the page. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Tracking Links Tool
I think someone may be trying to harm my site by adding spammy links so I want to track the links going to my site on a daily basis. Any tool suggestions? Majestic SEO is great for getting an overall picture of my links, but is not updated daily. Thanks!
