Penguin and Backlinks
-
I have been looking closely at my backlinks. I readily admin that I have not worked on backlinks in years since for e-commerce there is little white hat opportunity but here is what I find in doing a detailed analysis.
I mostly have back links that are pointing to our nicely ranked site (well it use to be pre-penguin) being hyjacked by crappy sites that just put us on the their site in order to try and rank. I have no way to prevent this. They are like a cancer. Point me to the Doctor.
Is Goggle penalizing us for these guys listing us in long pages list to create pages that obviously exist for one reason...... To display Adword Ads....isn't that a twist that simply sucks for use but has Google making money either way.
If they want to penalize us for them stealing our link then we should get a say in accepting the link.
Advice on dealing with this? Do I have to hire someone to create enough good links to overcome this trash that I have no control over ?
Perhaps my competitors are doing this. I simply can't tell.
Any advice is appriciated.

We have very little back-link profile and most of these links are from silly sites that back-link to sites trying to build Directories to game the system. So it sounds like your advice is look at them and if not suspect and not back anchor text then recover them otherwise leave them 404
-
If they're suspect, or could put you at risk of over-optimizing from anchor text, I would leave them to 404. I assume these are links that were built for you in the past.
If they're branded links and you have a strong backlink profile, I might 301 them. It all depends on what your current profile looks like and how these may affect your current standing in regards to Penguin.

Most point to the home page but some to category or product pages.
We are working on onpage but wondering what if anything to do with this old stale back-links

Hey John -
Are these links pointing to your homepage, or to other pages on your site? This makes a big difference in knowing what to do with them.
Also, might there be other factors at play here, such as over-optimization onsite? I'd love to take a look at your site. If you don't want to share the URL here, feel free to PM it to me.

I have discover that I have 288 back-links that 404. Many of them come from suspect sites. Do I 301 these backlinks so webmasters does not show these errors or to I leave them 404 as a vote that I don't like those unasked for backlinks ?

First off, I wouldn't panic. As the SEO Moz blog recommends, don't just start trying to take a hatchet to your links and assume that that will fix the problem.
Second, realize that a lot of what is going on with Penguin is algorithmic. That may not be any comfort, but I'm currently being beaten by generically popular sites, not competitors. There's nothing I can do until Google decides that they want to value quality sites again over popular ones. Did they penalize us for some backlinks? Possibly (when we started SEO years ago we did reciprocals with exact match keywords, one of the things Penguin is targeting), but the lack of highly relevant results (as in the pages getting #1 are simply popular sites with a page that mentions those words, not sites focused on them) for our primary terms means that Penguin, like Panda, penalizes first and fixes later.
Third, unfortunately, the only way to plug the hole caused by Penguin (we're down 15-20% in traffic on our #1 site over last year) is to buy Adwords. Get a budget and start a campaign. It's the only quick fix out there. If it is links sinking your ship, even nuking them all immediately wouldn't fix your drop and will probably hurt you more in the long run. Go back to SEO basics (quality content and building good links) and hope this storm passes soon.

Backlink Transparency with SEO Agency
Hello everyone. I recently started working with an SEO agency and today they gave me an updated keyword report which showed some increase in rankings. I was not aware that any backlinks had been created yet so I asked for a report of the links. Their response is below and I am just wondering if this is normal practice being I have not worked with any type of SEO agency yet. "

Hey Daniel, We release a small report on them which the guest blog team will do soon. We don't reveal all backlink sources unfortunately because people have tried to bother the webmasters we have and basically steal our techniques. But rest assured you will be ranking at the top of the pack with our methods 😃

Nofollow backlinks - are they worth it?
As we all attempt to get backlinks for the sites we manage, I have to wonder if it's worth it at all to get a nofollow backlink. Does Google give and positive credit for a link to a site if it is a nofollow link? Obviously, the follow links are worth pursuing. I'm just trying to gain some perspective. Thanks, Wick

Is it better to have backlinks from domains with medium DA, UR, using same language and good relevancy, or backlinks from domains with high DA, UR but using another language and with less relevancy?
Dear all, while I understand that quality backlinks with high DA, UR, same-language and relevancy would be best, would backlinks with high DA, UR but less relevancy and using languages other than the one used in my website be something good? Or would they do more harm than anything else and still be outcompeted by backlinks with lower DA, UR but same language and/or more relevancy? Thank you Frank

How long does it take Google to give value to a backlink?
Hi Once Google indexes your backlink does it pass value to that link straight away? Before i was under the impression once backlinks were created (providing they were good links) you wouldn't see any value or the serp climb for 6/10 months, is that still the case? Reason i ask is we're link building for a summer item and most if the back links are being indexed within a few days by Google. If the backlinks are given value by Google once indexed then we'll carry on till late summer. If its 6/10 months to be recognized we may start moving onto something else. Advice would be appreciated.

Backlink question
Hi all. Here's the scenario. There is a company who provide financial services to their online clients. On ALL their clients sites they have a "payments-by-us" style logo with backlink to their homepage domain name. This means they have over 3,000 links from a multitude of non-related websites - with just 3 or 4 anchor text keywords in these backlinks. No surprise they have been hit by Penguin My questions What it the best practice for these type of linking LOGO's. Should they link to a dedicated page, and NOT the homepage? Should they have branded + anchor text, no text, or just branded? or a combination of each Should they even be a link at all as they are coming from such a diverse group of sites? I understand how Penguin penalises for overuse of money word keywords as anchor text. This is something that has definitely happened here (by the bucket load) ... Assume the anchor text is "Green Chips Finance" and that phrase is also overused and a bit "stuffy" in their homepage. Here's my question - could simply lowering the prominence / significance of "Green Chips Finance" on the actual home page, help in reducing the impact of the damage caused by the thousands of backlinks with "Green Chips Finance" as the anchor text? I say this as they have a similar number of back links saying "Red Chips Finance", but there is no mention of "Red Chips Finance" on their homepage other than in the keywords and a couple of standard text mentions (no H1, H2, alt text etc) ... interestingly, "Red Chips Finance" (not the real words) is Google No1 whereas "Green Chips Finance" has been demoted from longtime No1 to about 4. Cheers

Link Anchor Text post Penguin 2.0
I have heard a great variety of views concerning the anchor text used for link building post Penguin 2.0 but have yet to hear some consensus. Some say the anchor text for external links should be different than internal. Some say brand should be used on external and keywords on internal. Some say brand and a variety of keywords on external. Any thoughts on a strategy consistent with google expectations and guidelines?

Trading Backlinks a good idea?
New to the "backlinking" party. Wondering if its 'good practice' to trade links with other websites within a like-industry. We've been receiving a lot of emails from other websites asking us to trade links. Is this a good link building practice anymore? Thanks!
