How to get rid of duplicate content
-
I have duplicate content that looks like http://deceptionbytes.com/component/mailto/?tmpl=component&link=932fea0640143bf08fe157d3570792a56dcc1284 - however I have 50 of these all with different numbers on the end. Does this affect the search engine optimization and how can I disallow this in my robots.txt file?

Hi Michelle,
In addition to what Alan said, I might take a couple of more actions on this page. Since it sounds like you're a beginner, don't worry if you don't understand all this stuff, but I wanted to include it for anyone else reading this question.
I've also tried to include links to relevant sources where you can learn about each topic addressed.
1. Yes, add the canonical. This basically tells search engines that even those these pages all have different URL addresses, they are meant to be the same page.
http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/canonicalization
2. The "numbers at the end" are called URL parameters, and there is a setting in Google Webmaster Tools that you can use to tell them to ignore parameter settings. This is advanced stuff, and Google does a pretty good job these days of figuring this stuff out on their own, so it's best not to adjust these settings unless you're comfortable doing so.
http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1235687
3. Honestly, there's no reason for this page to appear in search results, or waste search engine resources crawling the page. So, if possible, I'd add a meta robots "NO INDEX, FOLLOW" tag to the head element of the HTML.
http://www.robotstxt.org/meta.html
4. Additionally, I'd slap a nofollow on any links pointing these pages, and/or block crawling of this page via robots.txt, because there is no reason to waste your search engine crawl allowance on these pages.
http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=96569
5. And finally, I think it's perfectly legitimate to block these thowaway pages using robots.txt. Alan has good point about link juice - it's usually best not to block pages using robots.txt, but in this particular case I think it would be fine.
http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/robotstxt
Honestly, addressing all of these issues in this particular case probably won't make a huge impact on your SEO. But as you can see, there are multiple ways of dealing with the problem that touch on many of the fundamental techniques of Search Engine Optimization.
Finally, to answer your question in a straitforward answer, to dissallow this directory in robots.txt, your file would look something like this.
User-agent: *
Disallow: *mailto/Which will block anything in the /mailto/ directory.
Hope this helps. Best of luck with your SEO!

Michelle,
I agree with Alan, if your confused with the Rel=cannonical tag, I recommend your read the SEOmoz beginners guide to seo. More specifically this page: http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo/search-engine-tools-and-services, the whole book/guide goes through a lot of best practices, and even advanced SEOs can kind of use this guide as a "bible"
Hope this helps

Link juice flows though links only if the linked page is in the index, if not then the link juice just goines up in smoke, it is wasted, so you dont want to link to a page that is not indexed.
A canonical tag tells the search engine to give the credit to teh page in the canonical tag.
so with a canonical tag pointing to page.html from page.html?id5 with tell the search engine they are the same page, and to give credit to teh canonical.
this is how to createa canonical tag

link juice leaks?? canonical tag? ummmmm I thought I was farily smart until just this minute- I have NO idea what you are talking about
-
dont use robots.txt
You will cause link juice leaks for each link that points to a page behind a rebots.txt exclude
The best thing to do is use a canonical tag pointing to http://deceptionbytes.com/component/mailto

Duplicate content : domain alias issue
Hello there ! Let's say my client has 2 webshops (that exists since long time, so many backlinks & good authority on both) : individuals.nl : for individuals (has 200 backlinks, let's say) pros.nl : exact same products, exact same content, but with a different branding intended to professionnals (has 100 backlinks, let's say) So, both websites are 99% identical and it has to remain like that !!! Obviously, this creates duplicate content issues. Goal : I want "individuals.nl" to get all ranking value (while "pros.nl" should remain accessible through direct access & appear on it's own brand queries). Solution ? Implement canonical tags on "pros**.nl**" that goes to "individuals.nl". That way, "individuals.nl" will get all ranking value, while "pros.nl" will still be reachable through direct access. However, "individuals.nl" will then replace "pros.nl" from SERP in the long-term. The only thing I want is to keep "pros.nl" visible for its own brand queries -> it won't be possible through organic search result, so, I'm just gonna buy those "pros" queries through paid search ! Put links on all pages of pros.nl to individuals.nl (but not the other way around), so that "pros.nl" will pass some ranking value to "individuals.nl" (but only a small part of the ranking value -> ideally, I would like to pass all link value to this domain). Could someone advise me ??? (I know it sound a bit complicated... but I don't have much choice ^^)

Javascript tabbed navigation and duplicate content
I'm working on a site that has four primary navigation links and under each is a tabbed navigation system for second tier items. The primary link page loads content for all tabs which are javascript controlled. Users will click the primary navigation item "Our Difference" (http://www.holidaytreefarm.com/content.cfm/Our-Difference) and have several options with each tabs content in separate sections. Each second tier tab is also available via sitemap/direct link (ie http://www.holidaytreefarm.com/content.cfm/Our-Difference/Tree-Logistics) without the js navigation so the content on this page is specific to the tab, not all tabs. In this scenario, will there be duplicate content issues? And, what is the best way to remedy this? Thanks for your help!

Duplicate content or Duplicate page issue?
Hey Moz Community! I have a strange case in front of me. I have published a press release on my client's website and it ranked right away in Google. A week after the page completely dropped and it completely disappeared. The page is being indexed in Google, but when I search "title of the PR", the only results I get for that search query are the media and news outlets that have reported the news. No presence of my client's page. I also have to mention that I found two URLs of the same page: one with lower case letters and one with capital letters. Is this a duplicate page or a duplicate content issue coming from the news websites? How can I solve it? Thanks!

Duplicate Content - That Old Chestnut!!!
Hi Guys, Hope all is well, I have a question if I may? I have several articles which we have written and I want to try and find out the best way to post these but I have a number of concerns. I am hoping to use the content in an attempt to increase the Kudos of our site by providing quality content and hopefully receiving decent back links. 1. In terms of duplicate content should I only post it on one place or should I post the article in several places? Also where would you say the top 5 or 10 places would be? These are articles on XML, Social Media & Back Links. 2. Can I post the article on another blog or article directory and post it on my websites blog or is this a bad idea? A million thanks for any guidance. Kind Regards, C

Get rid of a large amount of 404 errors
Hi all, The problem:Google pointed out to me that I have a large increase of 404 errors. In short I had software before that created pages (automated) for long tale search terms and feeded them to google. Recently I quit this service and all those pages (about 500000) were deleted. Now google GWM points out about 800000 404 errors. What I noticed: I had a large amount of 404's before when I changed my website. I fixed it (proper 302) and as soon as all the 404's in GWM were gone I had around 200 visitors a day more. It seems that a clean site is better positioned. Anybody any suggestion on how to tell google that all urls starting with www.domain/webdir/ should be deleted from cache?

Duplicate content
I'm getting an error showing that two separate pages have duplicate content. The pages are: | Help System: Domain Registration Agreement - Registrar Register4Less, Inc. http://register4less.com/faq/cache/11.html 1 27 1 Help System: Domain Registration Agreement - Register4Less Reseller (Tucows) http://register4less.com/faq/cache/7.html | These are both registration agreements, one for us (Register4Less, Inc.) as the registrar, and one for Tucows as the registrar. The pages are largely the same, but are in fact different. Is there a way to flag these pages as not being duplicate content? Thanks, Doug.

Duplicate content domains ranking successfully
I have a project with 8 domains and each domain is showing the same content (including site structure) and still all sites do rank. When I search for a specific word-string in google it lists me all 8 domains. Do you have an explanation, why Google doesn't filter those URLs to just one URL instead of 8 with the same content?
