What is wrong with my site?
-
I could use suggestions/input.
My site is consistently being beaten by doorway pages with zero to no content. In fact, on the keyword "lawrenceville plumber" I am being beaten by a KID with a blank wordpress installation.
I really need help determining what my issues are and what I can do to help. According to all of the graders, ranks, etc my site is great. I have written tons of unique content, have added a blog unique articles and self-helps.
Please help!
My site is www.akinsplumbing.net.
Thanks!

Wouldn't worry too much about keyword density. It was possibly a factor in the early age of search engines. But today there's no correlation.

Hi Chuck,
Sorry to hear you're having ranking problems. If your site has been around for awhile, it's usually it's a combination of several factors that come into play.
Short of doing a full site audit, I did notice that a lot of your anchor text seems highly optimized:
http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/anchors?page=1&site=www.akinsplumbing.net%2F&sort=domains_linking_page&source=phrase&target=domainAnd a lot of your links come from the same few sites, including the footer of the aforementioned tattoo parlor. These links are generally found site-wide, in the footer, such as on this page:http://www.dec-international.com/products.html
Also, OSE shows a lot of links from related sites like this: http://bestathensplumber.com/contact-us/ (although it looks like the link has bee recently removed). These are apparently sites owned by your company.
The takeaway is Google will most likely devalue these links, and may even penalize you for not only over-optimization, but for too many inter-linking sites (link-network) If you own multiple sites, it's okay to interlink them a little bit, but in a way that's natural and included in your editorial content.
My best advice would be to try to trim some of these links, and work to replace them with hard-fought editorial links.
Hope this helps! Best of luck with your SEO!

Okay, I got my keyword density to 3% and 3.5%. That's about the best I can do. Having plumbing in your company name makes it hard, but I figured out a work around.
Any other suggestions guys? I really appreciate the help. This has hurt us pretty bad!

I do my business' SEO. I own a bankruptcy firm, so we're in the same boat SEO wise. I've found that content really helps you move up the rankings. I have a competitor with thousands of inbound links who used to beat the hell out of me, but he never added content.
I blog regularly. It's tough to get in the habit. I try to write three 500 word posts at a time and then schedule them to publish every other day. It helps you Google that you have a fresh site. It also helps you hit the long tail searches like "hair clog in drain."
Also, I second Quilbur. Having two closely related sites can hurt you.
-
The ranking problem is more recent. I will adjust the density to closer to 2% . I was told to stay around 2-6%, but you aren't the first person to advise that. The Plumbing keyword is difficult because it's in our company name.

Hi Chuck,
Along with what Johannes mentioned, I noticed that you have two websites.
- Akins Plumbing
- Akins Plumbing and Septic
While these sites are different, the content is very similar and so, you my be beating yourself up with the two. Also, I noticed you have many many links to a tattoo parlor, that may not be helping much either.
A few years ago, I had two sites in a situation such as yours. I got rid of one to save the other. Worked out great! Thats just my two cents.
Best of luck

Hello chuckakins,
I noticed that the keyword density for your homepage is a little bit too high.
- plumbing has 6.79 %
- atlanta has 6.04 %
- plumber has 4.53 %
To avoid to be filter for over optimization (especially since Penguin), try to bring the keyword density to a natural level. Around 2 % should be good.
Even though you seem to have a good amount of incoming links and Google in honoring that with a PageRank of 3, a lot of incoming links have the keywords plumbing, atlanta and plumber in their anchor text (-> Opensiteexplorer). To Google that might not seem like the links are build naturally.
Did you always have ranking problems or is that something more recent?
Hope this helps you a little bit.
Johannes

Why is this url redirecting to our site?
I was doing an audit on our site and searching for duplicate content using some different terms from each of our pages. I came across the following result: www.sswug.org/url/32639 redirects to our website. Is that normal? There are hundreds of these url's in google all with the exact same description. I thought it was odd. Any ideas and what is the consequence of this?

Why does old "Free" site ranks better than new "Optimized" site?
My client has a "free" site he set-up years ago - www.montclairbariatricsurgery.com (We'll call this the old site) that consistently outranks his current "optimized" (new) website - http://www.njbariatricsurgery.com/ The client doesn't want to get rid of his old site, which is now a competitor, because it ranks so much better. But he's invested so much in the new site with no results. A bit of background: We recently discovered the content on the new site was a direct copy of content on the old site. We had all copy on new site rewritten. This was back in April. The domain of the new site was changed on July 8th from www.Bariatrx.com to what you see now - www.njbariatricsurgery.com. Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!!

Is this ok for content on our site?
We run a printing company and as an example the grey box (at the bottom of the page) is what we have on each page http://www.discountbannerprinting.co.uk/banners/vinyl-pvc-banners.html We used to use this but tried to get most of the content on the page, but we now want to add a bit more in-depth information to each page. The question i have is - would a 1200 word document be ok in there and not look bad to Google.

Our quilting site was hit by Panda/Penguin...should we start a second "traffic" site?
I built a website for my wife who is a quilter called LearnHowToMakeQuilts.com. However, it has been hit by Panda or Penguin (I’m not quite sure) and am scared to tell her to go ahead and keep building the site up. She really wants to post on her blog on Learnhowtomakequilts.com, but I’m afraid it will be in vain for Google’s search engine. Yahoo and Bing still rank well. I don’t want her to produce good content that will never rank well if the whole site is penalized in some way. I’ve overly optimized in linking strongly to the keywords “how to make a quilt” for our main keyword, mainly to the home page and I think that is one of the main reasons we are incurring some kind of penalty. First main question: From looking at the attached Google Analytics image, does anyone know if it was Panda or Penguin that we were “hit” by? And, what can be done about it? (We originally wanted to build a nice content website, but were lured in by a get rich quick personality to rather make a “squeeze page” for the Home page and force all your people through that page to get to the really good content. Thus, our avenge time on site per person is terrible and Pages per Visit is low at: 1.2. We really want to try to improve it some day. She has a local business website, Customcarequilts.com that did not get hit. Second question: Should we start a second site rather than invest the time in trying to repair the damage from my bad link building and article marketing? We do need to keep the site up and running because it has her online quilting course for beginner quilters to learn how to quilt their first quilt. We host the videos through Amazon S3 and were selling at least one course every other day. But now that the Google drop has hit, we are lucky to sell one quilting course per month. So, if we start a second site we can use that to build as a big content site that we can use to introduce people to learnhowtomakequilts.com that has Martha’s quilting course. So, should we go ahead and start a new fresh site rather than to repair the damage done by my bad over optimizing? (We’ve already picked out a great website name that would work really well with her personal facebook page.) Or, here’s a second option, which is to use her local business website: customcarequilts.com. She created it in 2003 and has had it ever since. It is only PR 1. Would this be an option? Anyway I’m looking for guidance on whether we should pursue repairing the damage and whether we should start a second fresh site or use an existing site to create new content (for getting new quilters to eventually purchase her course). Please help on this penalized site!
OK, this is slowly frying my brain and would like some clarification from someone in the know, we have posted multiple reconsideration requests the regular "site violates googles quality guidelines" .."look for unnatural links etc" email back in March 2012, I came aboard the business in August 2012 to overcome bad SEO companies work. So far i have filled several disavow requests by domain and cleared over 90% of our backlink profile which where all directory, multiple forum spam links etc from WMT, OSE and Ahrefs and compiled this to the disavow tool, as well as sending a google docs shared file in our reconsideration request of all the links we have been able to remove and the disavow tool, since most where built in 2009/2010 a lot where impossible to remove. We managed to shift about 12 - 15% of our backlink profile by working very very hard too remove them. The only links that where left where quality links and forum posts created by genuine users and relevant non spam links As well as this we now have a high quality link profile which has also counteracted a lot of the bad "seo" work done by these previous companies, i have explained this fully in our reconsideration request as well as a massive apology on behalf of the work those companies did, and we are STILL getting generic "site violates" messages, so far we have spent in excess of 150 hours to get this penalty removed and so far Google hasn't even batted an eyelid. We have worked SO hard to combat this issue it almost feels almost very personal, if Google read the reconsideration request they would see how much work we have done too remove this issue. If anyone can give any updates or help on anything we have missed i would appreciate it, i feel like we have covered every base!! Chris www.palicomp.co.uk

Hi there, This seems a bit of a strange one, I have a particular keyword which I am trying to rank for, all internal links with the appropriate anchor text are pointing to the page I want to rank for, for this particular keyword, all external links are pointing to the page I want to rank for, for this particular keyword, however Google is ranking another page on my website for this keyword and the bizarre things is the page which is being ranked is a .PDF I am really not sure what else to do to give Google the hint that they are ranking the wrong page, any ideas? Kind Regards

Do I have to tell WBT site moved to a subdirectory on another internal site?
I am moving content from one site to another and redirecting the DNS from www.oldsite.com to www.newsite.com/old-site. I have put the 301 in place but I wanted to make sure I have to also tell Webmaster Tools to change the old site to the new domain? We still want the old domain name to answer and redirect to www.newsite.com/old-site. Thanks

Site comparison - what is wrong with me?
www.bcspeakers.com/ vs www.psbspeakers.com/ with the search term "speakers" why does BC speakers show up in around #50-60 and PSB is not in the top #1000? From all metrics on seomoz PSB kicks BC in every area by a large margine! can anyone see why BC is listed for that keyword and PSB is not?
