Client question: What should I do?
-
I have a client who ranks #1 for all her branded keywords. Other than those keywords, she doesn't really have an objective with SEO other than to get her name out there.
There are articles in some high end online magazines(think Forbes, Times, etc.) that mention her, and she wants those articles to show up when people do a branded keyword search for those magazines. She also wants those articles to show up when people Google her.
Usually when I do SEO for a client, they have a site and they want that site to show up for a variety of targeted keywords. Has anyone run into people wanting to 1) SEO other sites to get them in the top 10 on their branded keywords and 2) get listed under other peoples branded keywords? Is this even possible? My gut says no but I feel obliged to look into it.
Do I just build links to the articles with her keywords and hope for the best? I have no idea what to do with this client.

Thanks! I'll check those out.

I just read those articles to expand my knowledge base. Adam go check them out...it looks like the address what you are talking about.

This is very similar to a lot of reputation management campaign work. There's a small section of the blog devoted to this: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/category/19 with some great posts like http://www.seomoz.org/blog/our-online-reputation-management-playbook and http://www.seomoz.org/blog/reputation-management-seo-6-advanced-tactics
Hope those help!

Oops, that's what I get for speedreading! Rel=author won't do anything for you in that case. Hopefully someone else will have more info, but at that point I'd consider adding that info to her page descriptions so that people know that she's been in those publications.
My suggestion would be to come up with an alternative list of keywords related to what she does and convince her that working on these will be much more feasible than ranking her page for a term like Forbes. Now that I think about it, just show her this:
Good luck ranking for that!

I would work on sharing those articles, that is the only thing possible you could do. Hoping that Google will connect the dots of those articles content with her name.
It may work, it may not.
Good luck!

Hi, thanks for your answer!
A little clarification though, the articles weren't written by her. They are articles in the magazines about her / that mention her name. She wants when people to search for her on Google that they see these magazines are talking about her.
*Updated the original question to be more clear, sorry about that

Hi Adam,
What an interesting question! While this is not really my speciality, I feel obligated to add my .02 cents. Parts of what the client wants is unrealistic. Mainly that her article would rank when someone searches the magazine name.
HOWEVER, there are ways to get her articles to show up when people search her, or the specific topics that she covers in her writing. What you need is to get the magazines to give her the rel=author tag in the online version of these articles. The expert on this particular subject is AJ Kohn from Blind Five Year Old. Here are links to a couple his blog posts addressing this topic:
http://www.blindfiveyearold.com/how-to-implement-rel-author
http://www.blindfiveyearold.com/author-rank
If your client is a well respected author, these sites shouldn't have an issue implementing the Author tag, but you never know. It is certainly something she should request before writing in the future.
This also sounds like a great question for AJ, and since I'm going to MozCon, I'll be glad to ask him!

Question: About Google's personalization of search results and its impact on monitoring ranking results
Given Google's personalization of search results for anyone who's logged into a Google property, how realistic and how actually meaningful/worthwhile is it to monitor one's ranking results for any keyword term these days?

Sitemap Question - Should I exclude or make a separate sitemap for Old URL's
So basically, my website is very old... 1995 Old. Extremely old content still shows up when people search for things that are outdated by 10-15+ years , I decided not to drop redirects on some of the irrelevant pages. People still hit the pages, but bounce... I have about 400 pages that I don't want to delete or redirect. Many of them have old backlinks and hold some value but do interfere with my new relevant content. If I dropped these pages into a sitemap, set the priority to zero would that possibly help? No redirects, content is still valid for people looking for it, but maybe these old pages don't show up above my new content? Currently the old stuff is excluded from all sitemaps.. I don't want to make one and have it make the problem worse. Any advise is appreciated. Thx 😄

A client asked: "Are you guys aware of any recent changes to Google noquery traffic? I am seeing some chatter around this." Is he referring to "not provided" traffic?
I'm not sure what my client means by this question. I assume he's talking about "not provided" traffic. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks for reading!

VRL Parameters Question - Exclude? or use a Canonical Tag?
I'm trying to figure something out, as I just finished my "new look" to an old website. It uses a custom built shopping cart, and the system worked pretty well until about a year when ranking went down. My primary traffic used to come from top level Brand pages. Each brand gets sorted by the shopping cart and a Parameter extension is added... So customers can click Page 1 , Page 2 , Page 3 etc. So for example : http://www.xyz.com/brand.html , http://www.xyz.com/brand.html?page=1 , http://www.xyz.com/brand.html?page=2 and so on... The page= is dynamic, therefore the page title, meta's, etc are the same, however the products displayed are different. I don't want to exclude the parameter page= completely, as the products are different on each page and obviously I would want the products to be indexed. However, at the same time my concern is that have these parameters might be causing some confusion an hence why I noticed a drop in google rankings. I also want to note - with my market, its not needed to break these pages up to target more specific keywords. Maybe using something like this would be the appropriate measure?

Domain Name History Question
Hi, When launching a new domain, do you think Google holds these back in the rankings for a certain time period? I have noticed with a few, the rankings are held back for a few months (10 page deep results when the site's first indexed and ranked), then almost like a switch rankings start to come through pretty aggressively in some cases. For example: a result could be on page 16 for a month or so, then all of a sudden jump through to page 6 (with no link building or site update), at this point the result would stay steady and would need work to push through. Anyone else get this, or does anyone have any insight about domain history and Google. Cheers

Algorithm Question
Hello, I'm trying to figure out why my site and a competitors site literally trade places in the SERPS every week? My site has a boatload of content with an active blog with a lot of links versus a competitor that has virtually no links, limited content, 404 errors on the site. The links I have are all natural links with the exception of directories like JoeAnt. The only thing their site has is Domain Age where as mines is 4 months old. Any insight?

"No Follow", C Blocks and IP Addresses combined into one ultimate question?
I think the the theme of this question should be "Is this worth my time?" Hello, Mozcon readers and SEO gurus. I'm not sure how other hosting networks are set up, but I'm with Hostgator. I have a VPS level 5 which (I think) is like a mini personal server. I have 4 IP addresses, although it is a C block as each IP address is off by one number in the last digit of the address. I have used 3 out of the 4 IP addresses I have been given. I have added my own sites (some high traffic, some start-ups) and I've hosted a few websites that I have designed from high paying customers. -one man show, design them, host them and SEO them With the latest Penguin update, and with learning that linking between C Block sites is not a great idea, I have "No Followed" all of the footer links on client sites back to my portfolio site. I have also made sure that there are no links interlinking between any of my sites as I don't see them in the Site Explorer, and I figure if they aren't helping, they may be hurting the rankings of those keywords. Ok, so...my question is: "I have one IP address that I'm not using, and I have a popular high traffic site sharing it's IP with 5 other sites (all not related niches but high quality) Is it worth it to move the high traffic site to it's own IP address even though making the switch would take up to 48hrs for process to take affect? -My site would be down for, at the most 2 days (1 and a half if I switch the IP's at night) Is this really worth the stress of losing readers? Will moving a site on an IP with 5 other sites help the rankings if it was to be on it's own IP? Thank you very much ps- I can't make it to MOZcon this year, super bummed
