How much number of root domain affect in SEO?

my competitor has 18 root domain with 68000 links. If i build my links with quality links with differnt root domain will help me to get better SERP result?
I have about 6 months to build links and get in better position than my competitor. please advice me how can i start this project.
i am building links with competitors root domain right now and indexed by them about 6 of 18 and keep building it.. -
Kevin it is all about quality vs. quantity but don't let anyone tell you the quantity doesn't matter... We are quickly moving up the rankings by doing a combination of Social Media Bookmarking, Video SEO, Article Writing, Blogs, RSS submissions etc. I suggest you try a campaign involving those for starters and then maybe issue a PR via PRWEB.
One challenge we face is one of the top ranking sites we are trying to beat is building 3K + links a month... Hard to compete with that so we are just doing as much as we can and focusing on quality first.
6 months is good. Build out as much content and get the leg work started ASAP.

Kevin, while analyzing your competitors and also while building your own strategy, the most important thing that you have to consider is quality.
Usually good amount of links from fewer domains is not really helpful and it is always advisable to earn links from different domains….
I think your first step must be to figure out the quality of domains from where your competitors are getting a link, are they relevant websites? News websites? High authority? And other important factors…
Step two is to design you strategy in which you have to think that can you acquire link from the websites where your competitor’s link is present (if they are credible website this is a good strategy to start.)
You also have to design strategies that allow you to get links from different domains like guest posting, info-graphics, interviews and more…

Kevin - there are a lot of different factors that go into rankings. In general, it's better to have links from more root domains, rather than a large number of links from a few root domains. However, you can't disregard the quality of those root domains. If you only get very low quality root domains linking back to you, while your competitor has a couple of great, high quality links with the right anchor text, they could still hold you off for a while.
Sounds like you're on the right track though.

Domain authority of competitor went up drastically
Hello Moz community, I’m following one of my competitors on Moz, and I noticed a huge bump in his domain authority overnight, going from 8 to 53. I figured there must have been a reason for that, so I checked their links overview, and noticed they got tons of new external followed links, followed linking domains and total linking domains (see screenshot 1). I clicked on the external followed links to see what they are, and I saw tons of redirect notices (see screenshot 2). The links are from google: maps.google.co.fr cse.google.co.fr images.google.co.fr And .fr is just an example, they have tons of other cctlds like .it .ca .es… the list goes on (see screenshot 3) Do you know where these redirect notices are from? It may be worth noting that some of these redirect to the http version of his website, while others redirect to the https version. I’m guessing this must be a bug on Moz’s end or some sort of SEO trick, but did his DA really go up that much, and does it positively affect his website or will Google penalize this? Hi SEOmoz Friends, good day! I am hoping we could these following questions: Why we had 1000+ errors; consist of diff errors (page duplicate title, missing meta desc, too many links, title element too long,404 errors,redirect errors) while raven tools have only 100+ errors which is meta desc error Are those 1000+ errors from moztool are really significant? How to fix each of the error and what will be the result? we tried some way Meta Desc - provided meta desc 404 error - provide live links dup page title - change the other page's title - will it affect the seo ranking of the page? we believe its yes, so is it necessry to fix the error? title element too long - we understand that some of the pages have too long title, to fix the error we need to change the title to shorter ones, but we are afraid if it will affect the seo ranking, just like the previous q too many links - we understand that these links are from the submission we made previously, how will we fix this error? What are the benefits of SEO?
If a client asks "why should I spend time and money on SEO?", how would you answer? Is "to be found in search engines" the answer? If so, wouldn't it be more cost effective to use PPC instead of SEO? Is link building a waste of time and money? Is it better to just concentrate on quality content?

Do sites on the same c-block and same server count as seperate linking root domains when linking to each other?
Lets say there are 50 businesses who have their website on the same server and are on the same c-block but the owners of the individual sites are different (i.e. they are all completely different sites not relevant to each other). Each of those sites are linking to each other due to a feature on the sites. This obviously increases the number of total links to each site but does it also increase the number of linking root domains? Or does this just show up as one linking root domain due to all of them being on the same server and the sharing the same c-block?
