Featured citations vs. regular citations
-
Do regular citations have the same impact as featured citations for Google Local? or is it the higher a company is isted the more impact it will have on a google local page?
-
Great! My pleasure, Donnie.
-
Yes this helps thanks again.

Hi Donnie,
Okay, I think I get it. Sorry to be slow on the uptake. I believe you saw this page on Yext:
http://www.yext.com/products.html
Yext's PowerListing product is described like this:
PowerListings
Business listing management made simple. Easily add your business
listings to premier local search sites like Yahoo!, Yelp and WhitePages. It then goes on to list 9 directories for which they are charging you a certain amount and 30+ directories for which there is no price listed. I found the setup of this page to be very vague, so in the spirit of offering you a really clear answer, I actually phoned Yext just now and spoke with John, a Senior Account Manager.
As I understand it, you've got 2 options with Yelp. You can purchase the $499 deal which will apparently give you enhanced listings in a variety of directories. He described these enhanced listings as ones that you could purchase yourself from the listed companies, but the benefit is central management of all + a quoted 50% cost savings from what you'd be charged if you made direct purchases of the enhanced listings.
Alternatively, you can purchase the Emerging Package from Yext which costs much less and which consists of listings in all the non-priced directories on that page I've linked to, plus you can choose a la carte enhanced listings with from the priced directories, but will be charged the retail price for these. Again, the benefit here is central management.
Now, here's something nice. John asked me to let you know that if you would like to talk to him directly, call him at (917) 210-6709 and he will not only be happy to answer your questions, but he will also give you a discount if you decide to sign up. How about that?
But, to return to your basic question, Donnie - will having an enhanced listing in a 3rd party directory positively influence your Google Local rank more than a free listing? You know, I would be very surprised if this is the case. I have seen no studies to indicate this, but I can't answer this with 100% certainty. So, my approach to purchasing Yext's service would be that managing the listings would be easier and that quoted 50% discount off the list price for enhanced listings would intrigue me if my clients wanted enhanced advertising. My clients are, for the most part, too strictly budgeted to warrant this, so that's a factor.
Hope this helps!
Miriam

I don't think being placed higher on third-party directories via paid listings will boost your ranking on Places. As long as your NAP is consistent and crawlable on directories, then this is best practice. A free listing is just as helpful to your local efforts as a premium listing.
However, paying for a listing on a local chamber of commerce or industry-related directory might have more impact. Finding and obtaining listings from directories that are local and relevant to you is key for having the most impact on your google local page.

Yes we are making good talk I was under the impression that when I sign up for Yext they automatically get me featured listings in all those directories... Why would anyone pay $450 for a couple hours of work? crazy... Anyways, if I did manually submit everywhere and decid to get featured in a few directories, would being listed higher on these pages help with Google Local efforts?
Again thank you very much, you are awesome!

Hey Donnie,
We're have a good chat today, aren't we? So, now, I'm still trying to understand your intent here. You can't get free listings via Yext. You have to pay for them as Yext's service is a paid service. I just know I'm not catching your meaning here. Do you have an example to share of an offer you've seen or something like that?
Maybe what you mean is...is there any ranking benefit to paying Yext to get your citations vs. you getting them for yourself, manually. If so, my answer would be: not that I've ever heard of. On an agency level, tools like Yext's are time savers and thus valued, but I still believe that manual citation development is the best way to have the most control over what you are doing.
-
Hi again Miriam
I was referring to a regular free listing vs. a premium listing. If I were to use Yext for all my local citations I would get premium listings... Would these listings have a higher impact on my Google Local efforts?
-
Hi Derek,
Possibly, that is what Donnie means. Thanks for chiming in and we'll have to see what he says when he returns. I'm actually wondering if he means citations from certain sources over others, or something like that. We'll see.
-
I was thinking the "featured" listings meant the paid listings on directories like Yelp and YP.com
-
Hi Donnie, Can you please define the term 'featured citation'? This is not one I've ever come across. Please describe what you mean by regular and featured citations and I'll be happy to share anything I know.

Subdomain vs Subdirectory - Specific Case: A big blog in a subdomain
Hi. First of all, I love MOZ and learned a lot about SEO by reading articles here. Thanks for all the knowledge that i received here. I read all the articles about "Subdomain vs Subdirectory" in the MOZ community and I have no doubt that subdirectories are the best option for a blog. But, the company that I work now has a blog with more than 17.000 articles, 1.000 categories and tags, hosted on a subdomain structure. The website has a Domain Authority of 78 (I am working to improve these numbers) and the blog subdomain has the same (78). We had 2.7 million hits per month in the blog and 4.5 million hits per month in the site. I am advising the company to change the blog structure to subfolders inside the domain, but I'm finding resistance to the idea, because the amount of work involved in this change is enormous and there is still the fear of losing traffic. My questions are: Is there any risk of losing traffic with the amount of articles we have? What do we probably get if we change the blog structure to subfolders? Could we have increased authority for the domain? More Traffic? How can I explain to my superiors that we would probably have increase traffic for our keywords? Is there any way to prove or test the gains from this change before we run it? Thanks in Advance.

YOAST Premium extensions vs Yoast SEO Free?
Considering buying the Yoast Premium extensions (or perhaps whole bundle) but trying to weigh up if its worth it or if the free version is comprehensive enough to do the job? Obviously paid has more features but is it worth the price tag? (I have 4 different websites) If anyone has a paid version of Yoast Premium pack and seen improvements with rankings, mark ups in google etc I would appreciate hearing your story! Thank you in advance

2 Duplicate E-commerce sites Risk vs Reward
Hi guys I have a duplicate content question I was hoping someone might be able to give me some advice on? I work for a small company in the UK and in our niche we have a huge product range and an excellent website providing the customer with a very good experience. We’re also backed up by a bespoke warehouse/logistic management system further enhancing the quality of our product. We get most traffic through PPC and are not one of the biggest brands in the industry and have to fight for marketshare. Recently we were approached by another company in our industry that have built up a huge and engaged audience over decades but can’t logistically tap into their following to sell the products so they have suggested a partnership. They are huge fans of what we do and basically want a copy of our site to be rebranded and hosted on a subdomain of their website and we would then pay them a commission of all the sales the new site received. So 2 identical sites with different branding would exist. Based on tests they have carried out we could potentially double our sales in weeks and the potential is huge so we are excited about the possibility. But…..how would we handle the duplicate content, would we be penalised? Would just one of the sites be penalised? Or if sales increase as much as we think they might, would it be worth a penalty as our current rankings aren’t great? Any advice would be great. Cheers Richard

GWT, Editing URL Parameters for Ecommerce Features
I have had the setting of "let googlebot decide" on managing my URL parameters on an Ecommerce site in Magento. The products I sell come in different sizes and colors and finishes etc. These parameters are showing up in Google Webmaster Tools and set for "let googlebot decide". Some of them have as many as 8 million urls monitored. I changed the editing option to clam these parameters as "narrow searches", but still left the option to "let googlebot decide" (versus block urls). Will blocking these erroneous urls serve any benefit? Does blocking these help with the crawl/seo?

Canonical Vs No Follow for Duplicate Products
I am in the process of migrating a site from Volusion to BigCommerce. There is a limitation on the ability to display one product in 2 different ways. Here is the situation. One of the manufacturers will not allow us to display products to customers who are not logged in. We have convinced them to let us display the products with no prices. Then we created an Exclusive Contractor section that will allow users to see the price and be able to purchase the products online. Originally we were going to just direct users to call to make purchases like our competitors are doing. Because we have a large amount of purchasers online we wanted to manipulate the system to be able to allow online purchases. Since these products will have duplicates with no pricing I was thinking that Canonical tags would be kind of best practice. However, everything will be behind a firewall with a message directing people to log in. Since this will undoubtedly create a high bounce rate I feel like I need to no follow those links. This is a rather large site, over 5000 pages. The 250 no follow URLs most likely won't have a large impact on the overall performance of the site. Or so I hope anyway. My gut tells me if these products are going to technically be hidden from the searcher they should also be hidden from the engines. Does Disallowing these URLs seem like a better way to do this than simply using the Canonical tags? Any thoughts or suggestions would be really helpful!
