I am looking for SEO tips specifically for magazine site's
-
I have a client who has a website that is based on a magazine. They make their money through advertisement I am primarily an inbound marketer I would be very grateful if anyone out there has any tips for a site that has been around for quite a while ( over 10 years) we are transforming the site from HTML into WordPress then hosting it with a fast managed WordPress host using CDN. I feel the lack of links is an obvious place to start however if there's anything specific to magazine based websites I would be more than grateful to hear your opinions.
Thank you all in advance.
Sincerely,
Thomas von Zickell

Thomas,
There is one thing that will help a magazine type site IMO more than anything else: Original quality content that people are looking for. We build sites, do SEM/SEO, etc. and I never cease to be amazed at what happens when one of our copywriters seems to write the "perfect" piece for one of our clients. It does not matter that the on page SEO was not perfect, etc. All of a sudden we are seeing the piece on different sites and in news feeds and we did not use some press release or other mechanism. One person picked it up after another and all of a sudden it was out there.
If you concentrate on this and then provide a way to stimulate/tickle the reader along the lines of say a highly known sports site (ESPN, Sports Illustrated, one I have just begun to marvel at is The Bleacher Report) people will have more reason to stay on and go through your site. Just go to one of these and look how often a given story teaser appears on a single page. Have teasers that attract attention: If on the NBA page, see what is there about specific teams, on a team page specific players, etc.
Lastly, a client of ours has probably taught me more about the value of an image than anyone ever. He was unbelievably strong in how many, where, quality control, etc. on his site. As the result, he has a site with a ton of traffic much because of the images (not a mag type site though). So, look at successful magazine to web sites and learn from them.
The one concern is "they make their money primarily through advertisements...," make sure the good is not the enemy of the best. Many business people fall prey to the "if we take that off, we won't have the revenue..." line of thinking. Too much advertising will cost you in bounce rate and time on site. It must be advertising that fits the visitor and it must not be so obtrusive as to be annoying. I once let my online subscription to a major newspaper that I truly enjoyed because the way the began doing ads kept interrupting any chance of finishing an article.
Later they dropped that mechanism; I never went back.
Good luck,

Hi Nik,
you've got some fantastic ideas I think these are definitely very helpful I'm currently using a combination of tools one of them being http://scribeseo.com/ to generate the best content. However I do strongly agree with you link bait is where it's at. Thumbs up man thank you
sincerely,
Thomas

Hi Thomas
I would suggest to :
-
Copy your competitors campaigns.
-
Write linkbaiting articles + quality content. (which leads to natural link building)
-
Use the crazy egg, heatmap, so you can know where the visitors tend to click more, and there to install social sharing button, so you can get lots more social signals+traffic.
-
Set up the structure of the site so the link juice to flow to inner pages.
-
You could put backlinks to the categories + tags so they suck more easy the link juice the inner pages , and the fresh ones.
I hope that this helps, if is something more please advice.Learning new things is good
Regards Nik

Moz-Specific 404 Errors Jumped with URLs that don't exist
Hello, I'm going to try and be as specific as possible concerning this weird issue, but I'd rather not say specific info about the site unless you think it's pertinent. So to summarize, we have a website that's owned by a company that is a division of another company. For reference, we'll say that: OURSITE.com is owned by COMPANY1 which is owned by AGENCY1 This morning, we got about 7,000 new errors in MOZ only (these errors are not in Search Console) for URLs with the company name or the agency name at the end of the url. So, let's say one post is: OURSITE.com/the-article/ This morning we have an error in MOZ for URLs OURSITE.com/the-article/COMPANY1 OURSITE.com/the-article/AGENCY1 x 7000+ articles we have created. Every single post ever created is now an error in MOZ because of these two URL additions that seem to come out of nowhere. These URLs are not in our Sitemaps, they are not in Google... They simply don't exist and yet MOZ created an an error with them. Unless they exist and I don't see them. Obviously there's a link to each company and agency site on the site in the about us section, but that's it.

SEO impact of redirecting high ranking mirror site to the main website
During SEO audit for a client I noticed that they had over a dozen duplicate websites that are carbon copies of the main website. This was done via CMS platform and DNS. One of the mirror sites has about 400 indexed pages and has Moz DA of 42 and 137k External Equity-Passing Links. Full metrics comparison is attached. I originally planned on doing rel="canonical" on the mirror site but the CMS vendor never even heard of it and is refusing to implement it in the header. My only other option is doing one to one 301 redirects. Since the mirror site ranks well, even competes with main domain for some positions on the 1st page of SERP, what will be the impact after the redirects? Is doing 301's still the best option? Thanks! Canonical URLs all show trailing slash on main site pages - using Yoast SEO for Wordpress - how to correct
We are using Yoast for a number of our sites. We use naked domain as the canonical. I have noticed in the header tags that all our sites show the canonical URLs as having a trailing slash: Example: http;//foxspizzajc.com, when I look at the source code, it shows the canonical as http;//foxspizzajc.com/ Of course, it is much more likely that all sites that link to us will not use the trailing slash - so preferably we do not want that to be the canonical - among other reasons. Does this need to be fixed so the trailing slash is removed? I cannot see how to do this in Yoast SEO or in Permalinks structure for Wordpress. Sorry for my ignorance. Thanks for any help.

What's the best way to eliminate "429 : Received HTTP status 429" errors?
My company website is built on WordPress. It receives very few crawl errors, but it do regularly receive a few (typically 1-2 per crawl) "429 : Received HTTP status 429" errors through Moz. Based on my research, my understand is that my server is essentially telling Moz to cool it with the requests. That means it could be doing the same for search engines' bots and even visitors, right? This creates two questions for me, which I would greatly appreciate your help with: Are "429 : Received HTTP status 429" errors harmful for my SEO? I imagine the answer is "yes" because Moz flags them as high priority issues in my crawl report. What can I do to eliminate "429 : Received HTTP status 429" errors? Any insight you can offer is greatly appreciated! Thanks,

Site Explorer - No Data Available for this URL
Hi All I have just joined on the trial offer, im not sure if i can afford the monthly payments, but im hoping SEOmoz will show me that i also cannot afford to be without it! In my proses of learning this site and flicking through each section to see what things do. However when i enter my URL into Site Explorer i get the following message "No Data Available for this URL" My site should be crawl-able, so how do i get to see data for my site/s. I wont post my URL here, as the site has a slightly adult theme.

SEO PowerSuite - best kept SEO secret or just bullsh..?!?
I've come across a lot of SEO tools in the last 5-6 years. And there are many great tools out there! I don't believe in the one-tool-fits-all. Among the tools I make use of are Raven Tools and Searchmetrics (great audit and market analysis tool!), and the tools in here, of course. In my search for a better ranking report tool I came across Rank Tracker from SEO PowerSuite. That seems like a great tool in category with AWR; but I am not able tell so as I am not a power user. Well, here is where I am going: I then tested the rest of the PowerSuite and it seems as a great product. But searching for the tools in here, and nothing shows up. Silence. Also elsewhere in other serious places. Why is that? It is a collective secret, shhhh, don't tell 🙂. Or is it is just crap? I know they have a bad reputation in regard to prices and updates. What do you guys think?
