Resource linking

Is a resource linking page a good way to build backlinks? Do I need to ask permission of the site I am linking? & If do build a resource page do I have to keep in mind keyword density rule, not to stuff too many links on page? I see one of my competitors using a "resource page" and linking to some high athority sites, (which I know they have not asked permission) b/c they are big name site, NFL, NHL, ESPN etc.
Any suggestions much appreciated!
Thank you!!!

Yes you could do this (but dont expect from large companies). Reciprocal linking is not bad, just dont expect so much credit from Google compared to something where you have to work to get a link.
Dont forget companies who break the rules dont necessarily get penalised straight away, but one day they might be bitten. If you do everything as white hat now then you will see the benefits for years to come, not just this year.

Could I put together a page with a resource link, and ask if them to reciprocate? Ive looked everywhere using the SEOLink explorer, and cannot find where they are linking, yet i see it with the seomoz tool?
Seems as though my competitors are doing everything Against the rules and are outranking me, gets Very frustrating!

LB,
I will not write what first came to mind
The short answer to your question, "Is resource linking page a good way to build backlinks?", is no.
This is really a fairly old technique that is quite frowned upon on a lot of levels. The biggest being that is just a link manipulation scheme. If you have never read the Quality Guidelines on GWT, I will provide the link and an important excerpt: the link is Read and Heed Quality Guidelines to Survive
The excerpt is:
Avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings. A good rule of thumb is whether you'd feel comfortable explaining what you've done to a website that competes with you. Another useful test is to ask, "Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn't exist?"
The bold and underline are mine.
I hope this helps. The best way to get links is with great content and following the phenomenal suggestions provided on SEOmoz.
I wish you the best in your endeavors,
Robert

Hi Littlebigman,
Resources pages normally show reciprocal linking i.e. you link to me and I will link to you, which has little benefit to Google, but if its something your website visitors would be interested in then use. I dont think ive ever seen a links page ranking high on google, so I personally wouldn't worry about keyword density etc.
It isn't the websites that you link to which will help you but the links of websites linking to you, especially if natural links.

Am I better off with ten links from one site or one link from ten sites?
I am writing a series of linked-back articles for a highly-ranked web publisher, but wonder if I'd be better off sharing the articles across different sites. My goal is to grow our domain authority and SEO rankings.

Reddit LInks
Are Reddit links worthwhile? I hear they are sometimes follow and sometimes not follow. Also what about links verses self links? I'm pretty handy with reddit so I can probably make content that would actually be upvoted a lot. Let me know, thanks.

A link with "return false"- OSE sees as a No Followed Link
Hello, I couldn't find a clear answer to the impact on SEO for a link written in this way: [" class="expert_info" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">](w</span>ww.yourwebsite.com<span style=) [Does the "return false" act as a "no follow"? I came across this in our link data in Open Site Explorer which lists these links all as "no follows." However, an engineer I spoke to said that it shouldn't impact search engine behavior. Any ideas? Thank you in advance! -Sarah K.](w</span>ww.yourwebsite.com<span style=)

5 Million Links?
Hi all, I've been hired as the chief marketer at a (very) high traffic web company. Ironically, I don't have much SEO experience but I have been able to figure out PPC, on-page SEO and SEO content generation pretty well over the last few months. What I don't get is link building. My question is this; we're trying to move from the 3-4 SERP slot to the 1-2 SERP slot for a short list of keywords. My boss asked me to get busy with link building. Our competitor has over 2 million external links and we have roughly 60 thousand. What do I do? How do I start? Is there a legit, white hat way to get this job moving? Any insights would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance!

How many nofollow links should we build to have a natural link profile
Hi guys, As with many link builders we have been building lots of dofollow links for our site, so many that mainly our incoming links are dofollow. Some pages have 99.5% dofollow external links which I know is not very natural. In your experience in terms of percentage how much should you have in terms of nofollow external links in your link profile. I noticed SEOMoz has about 12-13% nofollow external links, shall I go with this figure? Thanks guys. David

Reciprocal links
Hi SEOmoz Pros, We have vendors from whom I was hoping to get links. To make it more enticing to them I was planning to select a small number of vendors (with good site metrics-PA, DA, PR) and create a "Featured Vendor" module on some pages that would link back to the vendor's site as well--thereby created reciprocal links. I was planning to only have one vendor to a page and only for the pages that we are targeting locally. My hope is to help boost the ranking of those pages. Is it okay to offer our vendors to link back to their site or should I ask for a one-way link back to our page and pitch it as exposure for their brand?? Lastly, does Google penalize for these types of links? Thanks!

Link building and directory links to a new site
I have three new sites all hosted on the same server in the same public html folder and each site is in a different folder inside the public html folder. These sites are a listing of live music venues in different cities in Texas. Should I link these sites together to increase page rank to each other and also put key search phrases in the anchor text and place these links in the text in the center of each page of each site to make the links more effective? Also, because the sites are about a year old they don't have many inlinks yet. If i submit them to about 50 directories will Google not like this because there are way more directory links than natural links? I've been told that it is trouble to have more than about 50% directory links compared to natural links. Thanks in advance for your answers! Take care,

Link Building: Asking for links versus building links
I am currently delving into link building for SEO having started out from a social media marketing side. From that angle, it was always my belief building high quality links came from engaging targeted bloggers and sites in my market and related verticals for product reviews and/or providing expert advise and opinion for posts they are creating. As I am learning more the "technical" side of SEO, I've read a lot of posters on here talk about asking from links from websites. While I get the concept from a strategic stand point, are links really asking for or is better to continue to pursue the long term investment of pitching to get coverage from well known bloggers and sites?
