Local/Geo-Targeted SEO Keywords

Hey everyone,
I work for a local jeweler who only has one store and wants to rank for geo-targeted and local results. We want to rank for "jewelry Minneapolis", "Minnesota engagement rings" and terms like that, since we're not an e-tailer we don't need to rank nationally... just in the MSP metro.
I've been trying to find a service that has accurate search volume information for local search. I want to see how many searches are being conducted for various terms so I know where to focus our time and effort to rank for these terms.
Does such a service exist? Or something that is more geared toward a strictly local strategy such as ours?

Hi Jayme,
Unfortunately, there is no tool that offers reliable local keyword information. This is due, to my understanding, to the different location of data centers. Even if you are in a major metro location like Los Angeles, the numbers cannot be relied upon.
So, here is the method that I and other Local SEOs I know follow:
- Do your keyword research without any type of local modifiers. Create a document with a list of your findings. This might look like:
jeweler
jewelry store
diamond engagement rings
fine jewelry
costume jewelry
etc.

Now, create a list of your geographic terms. These might include city names, county names, regional names, neighborhood names and zip codes. An interesting tool that can help you turn up geo keywords is here: http://www.localmarketingsource.com/local-keyword-research-tool/ This is solely for looking up the different geo terms - not geo/service/product combinations.

Once you've got your 2 lists, combine them. So now, your keyword sheet will look like:
jeweler minneapolis
jeweler minneapolis, mn
jeweler twin cities
jeweler 85342
jewelry store minneapolis
etc.
What you've accomplished by the end of this is a very big list of keywords that you can use. These can be reflected in your title tags, meta description tags, headers, alt tags, link title and anchor text and on-page copy. Off-site, you will, of course, want to know about these kw terms in any linkbuilding you may do.
Some of the terms may be reflected on the core pages of your site, whereas others may be set aside for userful blog posts the jeweler plans to write. I do a ton of professional copywriting for local businesses, and I am always interested in seeing keyword research that turns up terms that can easily be worked up into a Q&A-type blog post. For example, let's say we see a term come up like:
'judging diamond quality'
We can turn this into a blog post entitled:
Judging Diamond Quality 101
or
Judging Diamond Quality While Visiting A Local Jewelry Store
The post will then give tips for beginners who want to be able to tell the quality of the diamonds being offered by jewelers. And, of course, it can contain information like:
At Village Jewelers in Minneapolis, MN, every diamond we sell comes with a a legal certificate certifying its quality...etc.
So, the point is, you will want to find places for all of your keywords over time. Building a strong, beautifully, locally-optimized website is the cornerstone of any Local SEO campaign. This work includes the optimization of various elements of the website and the crafting of exceptional copy for every page. And, it can include the development of an on-site blog, enabling the business owner or hired copywriter to create great copy on an on-going basis.
Offsite, there will be more work ahead, of course, in your pursuit of high rankings. This will include getting your local business profiles created and claimed, beings sure you don't violate any guidelines, building citations and earning reviews at a steady, but not hurried, pace. Lots to consider!
Jewelry stores are fun clients because their products is so easy to write about and their clientele is generally pretty happy! Good luck!

Well, you can check KWs that include a location term in the Google AdWords KW tool. That suggests that, for example, [engagement rings minneapolis] has an approx. search volume of 140/month. Insert usual caveats about relying on the AdWords tool. You can also use Google Insights to drill down by location, so you can see a search like "engagement rings" in Minneapolis.

Keywords local and national
Hello everyone. I asked a similar question but still find myself a bit confused. I am a magician who is trying to improve my web presence. I found a list of keywords which I will list below. The results read from left to right the search results in the United States, and in Ohio ( where I am from). I found these results using google planner. Magician 14800 390 Magicians 5400 170 Corporate Magician 170 10 Comedy Magician 140 10 Here is my question. Lets use the word Magician as an example. I see that there are 390 results in Ohio for the search term Magician. Would I want to key the phrase "magician" or "Ohio Magician". How does google work with this? If I key just the word "magician" and someone in Ohio google searches for Ohio Magicians or something similar, will it detect their location and put me on there radar? When I key in " Ohio Magician" in the planner the results that come back are 0 or less than 10. I'm curious if google works on location and if I'm wasting my time keying in all of these cities that are showing no results. I began targeting "Cleveland Magician" "Columbus Magician" etc. Should I just stick with the main term Magician?

Improving SERP rankings via strategic SEO tactics
Hi, We just build some of our new content pages on our website 1.https://www.practo.com/ray/dental-software 2.https://www.practo.com/ray/dermatology-software 3.https://www.practo.com/ray/homeopathy-software Could someone explain how do I build around a good SEO strategy to compete with others for better positions on the SERP's. I have not done anything apart from fixing proper title tags , and meta descriptions etc and of course putting down relevant fresh content onto these pages. These pages were published about 3 weeks ago - Only this url ranks on the 2nd page as of now for keywords like "dermatology software" https://www.practo.com/ray/dermatology-software The rest of the URL's do not rank anywhere till the 10th SERP too! What could be wrong and where could I have the opportunity to boost the SEO tactics since all the pages which rank above it are just not providing the right kind of product as we are and still they take up the top positions and genuine users miss out on our domain. How to find a neutral rank for a webpage a keyword term?

I'm sure this has been answered here already - I'm just not searching for the right words. I'm trying to find the ranking for a website for specific terms. Being that the search engine remembers what I search (I try to log out, privately browse, etc), everything matters and impacts my search. I'm trying to see what a website ranks for a person who has never visited that website before, or doesn't have other factors influencing the result. I tried the keyword research tool, and while that seems to deliver what I'm after, it only gives 1-10. Even though these are the coveted positions 😉 I'd like to know if a website isn't ranking there, and is further down. We track the progress made after work is done to a page, to see if it moves up, and what other tweaks we need to make to improve the rankings and attract clicks. Thanks!0 -
Does it makes any difference if i use 's' at the end of keyword.
In terms of ranking and other stuff, how does adding 's' at the end of a keyword works ? For example - 'Custom Cases' in place of 'Custom Case' I am getting different results as well for both. Please advice....

Local SEO
Im trying to rank well for a local search. im trying to rank for my city plus lawn care. Its not that competitive, because people in this field dont know about seo. Im trying to just rank well for it can someone give me suggestions to do that. Should i create blogs and use the comments to hyperlink to my page. Im doing research on my competition and seeing what backlinks they are using. and off page seo ideas would be great as well We have a great google places page same with yahoo. We are trying to rank for different city's i rank well for the city i live in and my address is in, but i dont rank that well for other cities.
