Do you stop link building once you have your desired rank?
-
So with all these updates hitting sites left, right and center.
Now you have your desired rank on Google, do you stop link building for that project?
I can see some positives in this
You will not add links that will get hit by future updates.
If you do get hit in future updates you have less links to remove.
Obviously it an outstanding link came along from BBC or CNN you would go for that. But press releases etc would you now stop anything like that?
-
One thing to remember is that even if you change nothing about your site (on-site or off-site), your competitors are still working and changing things. If keep everything the same, your competitors could still be out there working harder, and there goes your rank.
-
I agree Tina, I think more so in this market to continue link building once you have a local rank could cause you issues.

With local SEO it could be a little different we built our sons Karate school's website two years ago, the majority of his links come from Karate tournament videos on Youtube, Vimeo, Facebook, Manta, and a couple other local sites.
We had first place after 2 months, and have never added another backlink. He is still number one, but this is because the competition is so small.
He may have 20 real competitors for his top 4 keywords, but most of their sites have little to no SEO at all.
I think it depends on your competitors if they are adding good links you should be adding good links.
For larger national keywords someone is always going to be adding backlinks so to stay relevant you will need to as well.
-
What do you think about Local SEO.
I see a lot of the sites post Penguin ranking with only 20-30 decent links.
In my opinion keeping it going could be overkill and cause you issues in the future for simple local keywords. What does anyone else think?

Never. Stop. Link Building.
Look at it like buying real estate. You want to protect your investment, you want to build it up as best as you can, and one day, if you choose to sell it, it'll resale quite nicely.
Sure, if you have other open projects, you can now kick up their priority status a bit, but always continue to drive authority to the domain.
Do you rank for 1-3 short tail keywords? What about long-tail keywords? What about variations? Market defined variations? #pointstoponder

I agree with eyepaq. It depends largely on the quality of the links you are generating. To the best of my understanding, press releases should only be published to a single authoritative site (either your site or a third party, not both). If you are distributing the same press release to multiple websites, those will likely be counted as duplicate content. If your site is one of those duplicating the content then your rankings could suffer.
However, if you are producing legitimate back-links from social media, blogs and other viral marketing channels then don't stop. Your competitors won't stop, and they will keep on moving past you. SEO (and marketing in general) is never done.
Never stop producing new, useful, engaging, unique content and getting the word out. Even if your current content ranks well, you should be producing new content that needs to be shared. I believe Google considers freshness of content as a marker of relevancy, so if all of your content and back-links (especially social) are 3 years old I suspect your rankings could decline.

Unless the links build are not shady I will move forward. Once the ranks are achived then maybe cut from the pace a little - don't invest that much as the ROI will only go down from there but stoping it's not a good choise in my opinion: it's not natural, there are spikes in the link profile, some old links will fade and at some point you will want to resume, competition is never at sleap.
Move forward while you are ahead and make the gap between you and competition even bigger - long term you will only have benefits.
On the other hand, yes, if the links are bad, spammy then you should stop before starting

Setting up a separate site for link building
We are jump starting a link building campaign for a personal injury law firm. We're planning on doing things right with earning links to content people will actually want to share, sponsoring local events, etc. We're a little worried that some good opportunities could be missed due to the fact some people have assumptions about personal injury lawyers and would be hesitant to link to us simply because of our injury, regardless of what we're trying to share/promote. One solution we're considering is creating a foundation associated with the firm that supports relevant causes and provides the public with educational resources. That might get over our branding hurdle a bit. We've also discussed setting up a separate site for the foundation and actually building links to it rather than our main site, then linking the foundation site to our main site. The hope would be that we could get more links to the foundation site and it would in turn pass on link juice to our main site. My concern is whether this strategy makes any sense. We'd be putting good content on this foundation site rather than our main site. How much link juice would actually be passed on to our main site in this case? Would so much be lost that it would negate the whole purpose?

Is my linking tactic affecting my rankings?
Hello All, I'd like to think that my SEO style was both helpful and useful. But lately i've been thinking that I may be damaging my own SEO! Let me explain, I love forums and technical gossip. Being a IT guy, I usually find an interesting question from websites like Yahoo, Microsoft, SOASE Forums etc etc and write a decent article on one of the questions going into real detail. I then post my basic answer (word limits) and a hyperlink incase anybody wants to read the rest of my article. I used to think that this was great for SEO, because it was certainly great for making great connections. However, a backlink check on my website shows that I have a good 40 - 60 hyperlinks, 40/ 50 of which from just Forums I've posted on but only from 3 - 4 domains. Would this affect my ratings? Looking at my own site from an SEO consultant perspective, having one source of links seems awfully suspicious to me!

Current best link building practise
Hi guys, Just an open discussion. I don't want to be told to use directories or just 'guest blog'.. What is the best method you are currently using? A lot of my competitors are using older techniques for quick wins but we're wary to do that due to the long term consequences... Thanks

Does the ratio of external nofollow links to external "do follow" links matter in terms of SERPs ranking?
My site has an external link nofollow:dofollow ratio of approximately 1:1 That is, there are about as many nofollow external links as "do follow" external links. I have an impression that the ratio of no-follow to "do follow" links is a factor in the way that our website shows up in SERPs. I have the impression from reading a variety of sources, and from looking at Seomoz, that calculate "trust" factors as if they mattered (in SERPs), that seem to value a relatively low nofollow:dofollow ratio. Am I correct about that? Thanks,

Outsource Link Building?
Currently we are in the process of creating a new ecommerce website. The site is not live yet, but we have done all of the planning and brainstorming and now are just doing all of the dirty work to get things ready to go live. We are devoting a lot of time on merchandising and developing the site, but currently do not have the resources to put together a good link building campaign in house. Does anyone have any recommendations for outsourcing the link building? The last thing we want is to hire someone that submits to bad neighborhoods and only directories. Is there a good, better, best scenario we should be looking at for pricing, ect? Obviously, like most who are starting a new site, cost is an issue at least until the site gives some sort of sign of life. Also, we are in the Pittsburgh area. We don't need to go local with this, but if there is someone particularly good in the area it would be nice. Thanks in advance.

Link Building Tactics
Without giving all of your secrets away, what are your basic link building tactics? I'm trying to do everything legit, but man is it tough to get links from legit sites. This is the first time I've truly had to go out and build links. I am trying to partner with bloggers in my industry to post a review of our site and submitted to some of the major paid directories and stuff like that, but I'm curious to know what the pro's do.
