Client Content Strategy (or lack of)
-
Hey everyone,
I just finished pitching a client for some SEO work. He said he does not want to write any type of content. He also said his industry is so unique that he does not want anyone else writing content for him either. His site has about 25 pages of total content now.
I am going to get all of his onpage seo good to go but what would you do? Just build links?
I really prefer to have some sort of content strategy in place but find it can be challenging with clients.
-
If he answers those questions once on his website via an FAQ, then he doesn't have to go back and answer them time and time again in email and phone!
-
I would do some analytics (after your new SEO matures) and show him how each page of the site is pulling in visitors. Then explain if he gets pages up for new content each of them will pull in more visitors. That should make "chaching" in his brain and might motivate him into new content. Maybe you can suggest some topics in his industry where he does not have search presence?
I really enjoy hearing about people who don't want to write content. It allows me to take their money!
-
If it's a matter of not wanting to "write" any type of content, is he interested in any sort of content? The fact is that SEO and search is concerned with delivering content to searchers looking for it, so without content you won't have much to go on (25 pages can still work, though, it all depends on the quality of that content and the depth of the searcher's intent: do those 25 pages answer their query and satisfy their search, or will they bounce to a competitor's site?)...
I look at your question this way:
If your client is simply averse to writing, what sort of content is he more comfortable in delivering?
If your client is satisfied with his 25 pages, can you find keywords and examples where competitors are eating his lunch? Showing lost opportunity can help change his mind.
But at the end of the day, you need to ask your client what his goals are, and if this roadblock in content opinion is going to hinder your progress in helping meet the goals...if content is going to remain at 25 pages, you have to weigh that against the stated goal and deliver the reality check.
Other than that, it's hard to say what I'd do in your shoes apart from seeing the site and knowing the niche: knowing the opportunities at hand and knowing how deep you want to on this project is really up to you to determine. (That is, you have to know if you're actually able to even do your job given these limitations, and if not then you need to tell your client you can only deliver so much in terms of ROI and move accordingly.)
Another way to look at it is that you've just been given a defined boundary: making your job potentially much easier than it would be otherwise had there been more content to rank.
[I see a bit too late that there were 2 other responses above mine - whoops! I'm too lazy to edit other than making the observation.]
-
Good idea! This is actually what I have done in the past. The client was reluctant but is now writing his weekly content.
-
Thanks for the response! Yes, that does make sense. He said he does not want to spend time on things that do not directly make him money. He said he doesn't want to answer questions, be involved, etc. He just wants to do his craft. He said he tried it in the past and he was spending more time answering questions than actually making money.
-
Always tricky....
I'd set the client expectations first - let them know that in your professional opinion there needs to be a content strategy and without one they won't reach their desired goals - and then just let it be (for now). Move on to implementing the rest of your SEO strategy. During reporting time where rankings are slow or making no improvements you can just mention that it's due to lack of content and suggest a content strategy again but this time just trial one or two pages and track progress (rankings, conversions, bounce-rates perhaps....etc). After 2-3 months of the content (working alongside your link build and on-page optimization) the results should speak for themselves.
Good luck!

Perhaps one way to re-open the content discussion is to show him that content, aka "conversations" are taking place online about his topics/products. Those conversations are going to take place whether he writes content or not. Does he want those conversations to be able to define his business, without his participation? Or would he prefer to be part of the conversation? I think it might just be a matter of showing him that conversations are going to take place regardless of what he does or doesn't do, and that ultimately it would be much better for him to participate. Hope that makes sense!

Content of the Product Page
Hi Everybody : how can you tell if the content on the product pages are accessible by google ? please have a look at my product page : http://www.fireplaceproducts.co.uk/stoves/aarrow-stoves/aarrow-ecoburn-defra-wood-burning-stove/ i used classes in product page to set the key features, construction ,... i notices other companies done these as text and they get better ranks do you think that's the reason ? also to test that i added the text exact same as the key features , construction ,... as additional information at the end of the product page , would you thin that would be considered as duplication ? Kind Regards Arta

Challenge: How to SEO a site with almost no content
Wondering what you all would recommend for SEO on this site: www.gudville.com Most of their content is behind a login. Basically there are 5 pages open to Google and to anyone without that login, and they are not open to doing it differently at this time. Once in, there will be a lot of sharing with Facebook friends that will include invitations to join them in their causes. Love to hear all your recommendations. Kathy

URL purchasing strategy
Hi, At my company we have alot of URLs (around 500), which are purchased for different reasons, some for defensive reasons, some because we think we potentiallly could use them in the future. Now we want to "clean up" this list, in order to minimize costs, butt im unsure about some of the URLs, and have some questions that in some way all are SEO-related. How used are the .xxx domains, we have alot of them of defensive reasons, but im not sure that we have anything to fear, whats your take on that? - and arent .xxx domains excluded by the search engines? We have alot of URLs which we redirect to our main domain, some of them have been their own domains before, and some of them are just redirects. When i remove these, i get two challenges: 1. If someone links to that domain, i wont be able to redirect them anymore. 2. If the domain have a good Page Authority in itself, i loose that link juice. How do i proceed in order to get knowledge about the above two factors, that are crucial in order to decided wheter to keep or delete domains?

Adding a directory and aggregated content to my ecommerce site
I'd like to add a directory of websites to my ecommerce site. We operate within a nice niche both in terms of products and demographics. The directory would be specific to our verifical and market. My concern is how Google will see these external links. A reciprocal link won't be required to be in our directory, but I suspect many sites would like back to us as we outreach to them with content ideas, their directory links, and as we share them with our social network on twitter and facebook. The directory would be broken down into categories so each page may have 1-20 external links on it. Our architecture already incldes category links (all internal) so these would be in additional the links you would normally see on our site. I'd also like to aggregate some content - again, mostly external links. Will Google have take poorly to that aggregation?

Quality Content...Sizzle
I see tons of 'push quality content'... push quality content.. Ok Ok. However, I am a little confused about this. Maybe I am understanding it wrong. Say I have a website about donuts. I am going to try to promote my donut website so people can see all my latest donuts and hopefully they will come into my local store and purchase them. I interpret quality content as writing about the topic of donuts. However, people who eat donuts probably don't care about the history of donuts, or the different types of dough used. They probably could care less about statistical facts that explain how my fictional donut company uses a whole wheat dough which will lower their cholesterol. What they want to see is a fat donut with icing on it. They want to see someone biting into it and enjoying it. How does a local donut company go about becoming #1 on the serps if they do not want to write constantly about all things donuts? A video would be nice for them perhaps? Like I said, perhaps I am overthinking this. But I have understood the best way to write quality content is to identify a problem that people are having, then find the solution, then write about it (or video). But sometimes people just need to be TEMPTED. Coca-Cola uses awesome commercials to promote their business. They are not writing articles about high fructose corn syrup. How does this so called 'temptation' factor play into SEO? I want to sell the sizzle not the sausage. Ultimately marketing is about getting more sales which means more money for the business. Being high on the SERPs helps get more sales (hopefully). Writing quality content is great and I am sure it works in plenty of areas. But I am not sure how to apply it to certain industries. Creative marketing ideas have to come into play to market the fake donut business. How do you tie these other strategies in so they help you with SEO? All I can think about is posting a 'cool' video on youtube/facebook and trying to get people to like it. Cross your fingers and hope it goes somewhat viral? Thanks!

Anything to be done about lack of link in a WSJ story?
We had this great, great thing happen which is that the Wall St. Journal quoted me in a story about contract workers. The story (here, and my blog about it here) was awesome, but it had absolutely no link. It got the name of my company right, but the only link comes in a comment that I wrote, and that is on a separate comment page that has not shown up in my Open Site Explorer, or any other tool that I can see for inbound links. Is there anyway to help Google to understand that the Blogmutt that the WSJ wrote about is the same as the Blogmutt.com on the internet? I don't imagine there is, but I'd be interested if anyone has any ideas. Thanks in advance, (First time posting here) -Scott

Good Content Writing | How do I convince them?
Mozzers, I work in-house for a large lead generation for matchmakers. We do really well with PPC and that will always be there. They will always do PPC but have hired me to do SEO. We're ranking really good for some competitive key phrases as well. I believe in good content. I feel we should have a quality control for content just like we do before we run a a/b or a multivariate test. However there are people here who would rather pay $3 on oDesk for a article than a much higher price. How have you convinced your bosses or your clients that good quality content is the way to go? I've hassled for good links and got in contact with some bloggers who are ready to let us Guest Blog who have never done so before. What would you do?
