Different URLS for our multi language pages caused penalty?
-
Hi all,
We have a website www.phoneboxlanguage.com with 4 different language versions (Spanish, French, Italian, German). We have all the different versions on totally different URLS. E.G the French URL is www.cours-telephone-anglais.com. Recently this month we saw a huge drop in SERPS for all the 'foreign' language pages.
This had happened before for the Spanish and French, which we put down to keyword density issues, so created new URLS for those pages.
However now all 4 foreign pages have dropped.
Could this be due instead to a penalty for duplicate sites?
The content is obviously different due to different languages, but the coding and templates for the sites are the same.
How can we find out this is the case and what should we do? I was thinking after some research on the forum to create subfolders in the original (phoneboxlanguage.com) and then create 301 redirects, from the old dropped sites, or would their penalties be bad for our original site, if this were the case?
We are obviously very keen to not further damage the site and the original site which remains o.k.
Many thanks for your kind help.
Quime.

Hi thanks for the reply,
Should we not have any shared scripts, how can we avoid this, just by removing them? Ideally we need the pages the same, but with different language versions, while not being punished.
I will make all the changes you suggest.
The Geo-targeting was not done for all, but we did it today.
The drops were on Google regional and com search engines.
Would these changes lift the penalties, or are they more permanent sometimes?
You would not suggest subdomains and moving the foreign pages to the main site?
Also I have just been told that having 'dashes' in the URL has become an issue, has anyone ever heard of that??
Many thanks

a) Your international sites have this in the headers <html xmlns="<a class="attribute-value">http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml</a>" xml:lang="<a class="attribute-value">en</a>" lang="<a class="attribute-value">en</a>">
Should be: <html xmlns="<a class="attribute-value">http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml</a>" xml:lang="<a class="attribute-value">en</a>" lang="FR">
b) I would nofollow or delete if not necessary to conversion any of the links pointing to your main domain on your other sites, including your school. subdomain login page and anything else linking to the main site. Run a tool to identify where your external links are and nofollow all of them.
You're sharing scripts:
<script type="<a class="attribute-value">text/javascript</a>" src="http://www.phoneboxlanguage.com/javascript/thickbox.js">script> <script type="<a class="attribute-value">text/javascript</a>" src="http://www.phoneboxlanguage.com/Javascript/dropdownmenu1.js">script>
c) are you properly geo-targeting the sites in Google WMT?
d) you saw the results drop for the international sites in their respective Google regional search engine?

Hi, thanks for the reply,
The sites were interlinked, (a link at the top going to the other language pages on each)
There was link building involved to a greater or lesser extent, the Italian page not for several months, the French and Spanish quite recently.
They are hosted on the same host account but on separate I.P addresses.
On the webmasters we have not seen any messages warning us of anything.
-
Were the sites all interlinked?
Were you doing any link building?
Are they all on the same server?
If you're penalized you need to unwind the penalties. Have you gotten any messages in your Google WMT accounts?

SiteName Attribute Showing in Different Language in SERP
We are currently experiencing issues with our subdomain SiteName. Our parent company root domain is a Japanese language site, but we have an English subdomain that is for the United States primarily, and nearly rest of world for organic traffic. Our issue is that we have followed the guidelines here: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/site-names There was a large post on here with many responses including Googlers with issues others were having, but it has since been removed. Here is the code in place on our homepage: <script

"name": "Mescius Developer Tools",
"alternateName": ["Mescius, inc.", "developer.mescius.com"],
"url": "https://developer.mescius.com" }
</script> Unfortunately this is what is appearing in the SERP. It is using the Japanese equivalent of our parent company. Screenshot 2024-02-23 at 3.37.55 PM.png Even though the relationship between root and subdomain should not be causing this, it seems like something is impacting this incorrect SiteName, and it is impacting CTR for the subdomain. Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix?0 -
Different links to ultimately the same page on Magento
Hi Everyone, I'm wondering if some of you could help me out a bit here as I'm a bit consfused. If you please take a quick look at my site: https://tesorotiles.co.uk the way it's setup is that you can get to the same page via 3 or 4 different routes as below: https://tesorotiles.co.uk/type/wall-tiles/rho https://tesorotiles.co.uk/by-area/bathroom-tiles/rho https://tesorotiles.co.uk/collections/rho These 3 are the exact same page and we've done it this way to make sure there is no break in the breadcrumb. Is this ok SEO wise or anyone have any recommendation. Thanks in advance

New Page Showing Up On My Reports w/o Page Title, Words, etc - However, I didn't create it
I have a WordPress site and I was doing a crawl for errors and it is now showing up as of today that this page : https://thinkbiglearnsmart.com/event-registration/?event_id=551&name_of_event=HTML5 CSS3 is new and has no page title, words, etc. I am not even sure where this page or URL came from. I was messing with the robots.txt file to allow some /category/ posts that were being hidden, but I didn't re-allow anything with the above appendages. I just want to make sure that I didn't screw something up that is now going to impact my rankings - this was just a really odd message to come up as I didn't create this page recently - and that shouldnt even be a page accessible to the public. When I edit the page - it is using an Event Espresso (WordPress plugin) shortcode - and I don't want to noindex this page as it is all of my events. Sorry this post is confusing, any help or insight would be appreciated! I am also interested in hiring someone for some hourly consulting work on SEO type issues if anyone has any references. Thank you!

According to 1 of my PRO campaigns - I have 250+ pages with Duplicate Content - Could my empty 'tag' pages be to blame?
Like I said, my one of my moz reports is showing 250+ pages with duplicate content. should I just delete the tag pages? Is that worth my time? how do I alert SEOmoz that the changes have been made, so that they show up in my next report?

2 links on home page to each category page ..... is page rank being watered down?
I am working on a site that has a home page containing 2 links to each category page. One of the links is a text link and one link is an image link. I think I'm right in thinking that Google will only pay attention to the anchor text/alt text of the first link that it spiders with the anchor text/alt text of the second being ignored. This is not my question however. My question is about the page rank that is passed to each category page..... Because of the double links on the home page, my reckoning is that PR is being divided up twice as many times as necessary. Am I also right in thinking that if Google ignore the 2nd identical link on a page only one lot of this divided up PR will be passed to each category page rather than 2 lots ..... hence horribly watering down the 'link juice' that is being passed to each category page?? Please help me win this argument with a developer and improve the ranking potential of the category pages on the site 🙂
