Developing a link profile.....
-
So we are a brand new site looking to establish a link profile of earned links vs. manipulative link building practices and have received some conflicting information.
Our goal is to provide users and webmasters of relevant websites with useful content about the areas and topics we cover and let them decide to link to us. We have been advised by some parties that in order to develop a base set of links we should enter our website into directories. Now I understand entering it into some of the main directories such as BOTW and Yahoo etc, but please offer your thoughts on smaller less official directories.
Thanks in advance.
Scott

Hi all, this might be a stupid question, but what is the "conventional way" of building links?
Thanks

Hi Scott, I agree with Irving. Don't start with those smaller spammy directories. Build up the site and build links in a conventional way. There's still some good directories out there but they're becoming more limited by the day. I'd start with BOTW and a few others that relate to your specific niche from SEOmoz's list of directories (http://www.seomoz.org/directories) You can also get links other ways, I wrote a quick article about gaining high quality links from authoritative domains - http://www.bradkrussell.com.au/followed-links-authoritative-domains. Hope that helps, Brad

I think it is NOT a good place to start. These directories are dead. Google knows they are spam. If you have a new site and you want to build up some trust in Google, submitting a brand new site to 100 spam directories is a perfect way to show them you have bad intent. You would be better off not link building like that and showing them that you are not trying to game the system. Build up social media presence and link to them from your site, set up a places page and G+ page and link to them , work on your on page optimization. Don't start spamming links and building up an artificial link profile on a brand new site or you'll get most likely get penalized.

Less official directories are no longer worth as much anymore. Its because anyone can do it, which just saturates the directory. Its a good place to start, but doesn't mean putting your site on 100 directories will do you any good.

Correct Internal Linking Strategy
Hello. So my website currently has 8 pages in total. (Homepage, 5 Service Pages, Contact, About). I currently have about 80 quality RD and my Homepage already ranks #8 for my main keyword, while all Service Pages (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5) are stuck somewhere at #30-60 positions for their target keywords. My internal linking scheme looks like this https://i.imgur.com/2cA529v.png. The Homepage has a sidebar with links to all Service Pages, and each Service Page has the same sidebar that links to each Service Page, but doesn't link back to my Homepage. Contact and About pages can be accessed only via the links in the menu. I don't have any contextual links on my website, so all pages that are important for SEO are linked only via this same very sidebar. All these Service Pages are equally valuable to me, but they don't seem to grow much in Google. The Onpage Score of these pages is better than those of TOP10 competitors, and my content provides more value (I used the Skyscraper Technique). Taking all that into consideration, can you please tell me what might be wrong? Why Should I build more quality backlinks to these service pages instead of the homepage? Should I add contextual links to all my service pages from the homepage? Does my internal linking strategy look good to you? If not, what should I change? Can I hit top #10 with my internal pages for their target keywords if I mainly build links only to my homepage? All keywords that I'm after have low to medium competition. My website has 90 RD in total, and my website's DA is 27. Thank you. 2cA529v.png

Link from Blogspot.com subdomain...
I have found an author that has an article about a particular product we sell online. I was thinking of speaking to them about getting a link to our site. Nofollow internal links
Hi, we have problems with having too many links on page. Our website has a menu with 3 level sub-navigation drop down for categories which we want to maintain, for easy-navigation for the users. http://www.redwrappings.com.au/ After reading this article: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/questions-answers-with-googles-spam-guru, and some other articles, we came up with a solution. We can easily reduce the number of links per page by putting 'nofollow' on our categories links menu dropdown and create a separate 'landing page' that contains links to these categories (and allow 'follow' links for robots). Is it wise to do this? Or any better, easy solution that you can suggest? Thanks

How is link juice passed to links that appear more than once on a given page?
For the sake of simplicity, let's say Page X has 100 links on it, and it has 100 points of link juice. Each page being linked to would essentially get 1 point of link juice. Right? Now let's say Page X links to Page Y 3 times and Page Z 5 times, and every other link only once. Does this mean that Page Y would get 3 "link juice points" and Page Z would get 5? Note: I know that the situation is much more complex than this, such as the devaluation of footer links, etc, etc, etc. However, I am interested to hear peoples take on the above scenario, assuming all else is equal.
