Vendor Descriptions for SEO... Troublesome?
-
Howdy!
I have been tossing this idea around in my head over the weekend and I cannot decide which answer is correct, so here I am! We a retailer of products and is currently in the midst of redesigning our site-- not only design but also content.
The issue that we are facing is with product descriptions from our vendors. We are able to access the product descriptions/specs from their websites and use them on ours, but my worry is that we will get tagged for duplicate content. Other retailers (as well as the vendors) are using this content as well, so I don't want this to have an adverse effect on our ranking.
There are so many products that it would be a large feat to re-write unique content-- not to mention that the majority of the rhetoric would be extremely similar. What have you seen in your experiences in similar situations? Is it bad to use the descriptions? Or do we need to bite the bullet and do our best to re-write hundreds of product descriptions?
Or is there a way to use the descriptions and tag it in a way that won't have Google penalize us?
I originally thought that if we have enough other unique content on our site, that it shouldn't be as big of a deal, but then I realized how much of our site's structure is our actual products. Thanks in advance!

That's where I'm at the crossroads, because we're not an eComm site, but we obviously want to be visible and provide great information for our visitors.

Thanks, EGOL!

JPretz,
I'm just unsure if using the same content will really hurt us
I would say, "Define hurt." If the competitors are each selling ten items a day each on a given product and you are selling one, are you going to be hurt?
Then, if you are, make a change.
We know that duplicated content is a negative algorithmically, we know that the higher we rank the higher activity we have.
Hope that helps,
best

If the site is massive and the task daunting, testing will at least give you direction. But, at the end of the day, the more you differentiate your site and those duplicate products the better off you are.
I agree!
We write all of our own product descriptions, take almost all of our own photos. Our product descriptions approach article length for some products. This can be done to improve salesmanship, include important long-tail keywords and make your content superior to everything else that is out there.
When people call or write to ask questions about a product (or return a product) we often beef up our descriptions.
For important products we can have two additional articles of 500 to 1500 words, with several original photos plus a video. The results are very worthwhile.
If you are not one of the dominant sites in your niche you might not be able to justify all of that work... but... doing all of that work might make you one of the dominant sites in your niche.
Take Robert's advice and test a few - and do a great job on them. I am willing to bet that your rankings go up and your long-tail traffic skyrockets.
-
Thanks for your reply, Robert, I appreciate the insight. I agree about the differentiating factor. I'm just unsure if using the same content will really hurt us, but you make a good point about testing. We're ultimately not trying to compete on a nationwide level right now, more-so local, but the opportunity is potentially there for the future.

JPretz,
IMO this is one of those cost benefit analysis questions: Is rewriting the product descriptions worth the result change? Well, you could test it on some percentage of products to see if it changes outcomes. Then decide.
If the site is massive and the task daunting, testing will at least give you direction. But, at the end of the day, the more you differentiate your site and those duplicate products the better off you are. Think about every competitor selling a Blue Oyster Sweater. If they all use the manufacturer's description, there is no differentiation. If you differentiate and do so with images, text, etc. who will they see. What if you are using markup and they are not, etc.?I like being differentiated.

Will Removing My Keyword from Breadcrumb Title to Simplify UI Hurt Page SEO?
Working on the UI of a new site and I would like to simplify the breadcrumbs so they do not take up as much space. They will still communicate the same message to user. See example below: Before: Home > Widget Dealers > Tennessee > Nashville After: Home > Dealers > Tennessee > Nashville The page title and/or menu item would still be "Widget Dealers". So my question is, if I remove the keyword "Widget" only from the breadcrumb could that hurt me in any way?

What do you think of Theme pyramids for SEO?
Hi, Just been reading up on theme pyramids, I have seen these before but found a good article on the subject going into quite some detail. http://www.canonicalseo.com/theme-pyramids/ Using the word 'Pyramid' does scream black hat to me but looking at the structure, this must be the best way for internal linking. Even the keyword structure looks good, Example: homepage - shoes category - red shoes sub category - size 7 red shoes Building anchor text links for shoes, red shoes or size 7 red shoes will benefit all 3 terms. Negative/Positive comments please.

Help for a complete SEO newbie!
Hi all, I've just joined seomoz today to try and further my very young education on SEO. My major problem is i need my site to rank high in local search engines but feel that none of the customers read much of the content as i am a landscaper and feel they just search "landscaping in Newcastle" and are immediatly looking for a contact number to arrange a free estimate. I dont do any online sales, its just to generate leads. I've spent alot of time building a better site than my local competitors but they still out rank me on alot of keywords i.e. "Driveways in Gateshead" My question is do i keep adding more and more content hoping this will work long term or do i link build with anchor text etc or both? I cannot believe they still out rank me when i feel i have more links more anchor text and a load more origional content and images. I think it may be that my site is still under 1 year old. I feel i am boucing from content to link building then trying something else without any real knowlegde of what i really should be doing or what should be the priority at this young stage for my site. I have managed to get on page 1 of google for most of my keywords in local searches ( obviously not national) but still feel its been more down to luck and effort than actually knowing what i am doing when it comes to site and offsite optimization Any help, tips etc would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks John

Improve CTR with Special Characters in Meta-Description / Title Tags
I've seen this question asked a few times, but I haven't found a definitive answer. I'm quite surprised no one from Google has addressed the question specifically. I ran across this post the other day and it piqued my interest: http://www.datadial.net/blog/index.php/2011/04/13/special-characters-in-meta-descriptions-the-beboisation-of-google/ If you're able to make your result stand out by using stars, smiley faces, TM symbols, etc it would be a big advantage. This is in use currently if you search for a popular mattress keyword in Google. It really is amazing how the special characters draw your attention to the title. You can also see the TM and Copyright symbols if you search for "Logitech Revue" Radioshack is using these characters in their adwords also. Has anyone found any definitive answers to this? Has anyone tracked CTR and long-term results with special characters in title or description tags? Any chance of getting penalized for using this? As a follow-up, it looks like you could also put check symbols into your meta-description tags. That has all kinds of interesting possibilities. http://www.seosmarty.com/special-symbols-wingdings-for-social-media-branding-twitter-linkedin-google-plus/
