Position Drop - Anchor Text Penalty
-
Hi - About a month ago we dropped out of all out top position ranking and now can be found around page 600 on Google for all those keywords. I feel this is because our SEO company over used or money keywords as anchor text - Could this be correct?
-
Sep 28 was the date of the EMD update but I'm wondering if your drop was actually Sep 27. There was a big Panda update on that day. The biggest culprit for Panda is content that is duplicated on other sites on the web or pages with thin content. But, Panda has nothing to do with overuse of keywords.
If you feel that this was because of overuse of keyword anchor text and the drop was not on October 5 then have a look at your webmaster tools to see if you've got an unnatural links penalty.
-
No we dropped on the 28th Sept...
-
Did your traffic drop happen on October 5? That was the latest Penguin update. A quick look at your backlink profile shows that it doesn't look natural at all...you've got 59 domains pointing to you with links containing your main anchor text and the next links all contain keyword anchor text as well:
http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/anchors?site=www.help-my-mobility.co.uk
Your tenth most popular anchor is your url. A natural site profile would have it's url or brand name as the top link.
Unfortunately if this is Penguin recovery will be difficult if not impossible.
-
Are you aware of links such as http://palomacosta.objectis.net/Qualidade/Members/phylishastings/fat-japanese-girl that are pointing to your site?
-
I think you can answer your own question by asking yourself this:
"Were you aggressively seeking links in ways that Google may deem inappropriate? Were you collected vast amounts of links with the same anchor texts in an unnatural way?"
If the answer to these questions is yes, then you may very well have been penalized.
After all, Google has warned against using this practice many times.

Share the URL and we can take a look.

Hi
It seems strange all the pages are now roughly sitting in the same positions - wondered if there is a penalty drop which has be applied....
-
Without knowing what your site is and doing analysis, it's hard for us to say.
It could be a factor. It could also be due to other algorithm changes.
If you've dropped in position that much, doubtful it's due to competitors being aggressive in their strategies.

Total Exact Match Anchor Text Percentage or a Few High Quality Exact Match Backlinks, which is better?
Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me. I am trying to rank a web page for a competitive regional search term. Upon inspecting all the competitors’ backlinks they appear to using an overly high exact match anchor text to rank on the first page for this keyword. Somewhere in the region of 15 – 55% exact match anchor text. So the question is what does big G provide a heavier weighting for, A.) The total percentage of exact match anchor text for all your backlinks, until it reaches the point of over optimization. A higher percentage up to about 60% will help you rank in the top 3. Meaning I should change a 1,000+ backlinks on multiple domains to the exact match anchor text. B.) Or just a few backlinks with the exact match anchor text but from really high quality domains with a ‘Majestic SEO’ Trust and Citation Flow above 40. Any help would be appreciated, exact match anchor text is meant not to work but it still does.

Backlinks from archived content? SEO penalty?
I'm curious, if I go to webmasters and suggest a change to an article in their archives (convincing them that the new link offers more value to their readers), how would Google look at that? It seems to me that if a two-year-old article all of a sudden gets a new link, it might look fishy, and might even bring penalties with it. Thoughts?

Over Optimised Anchor Text (Internal & external)
Hi First - is it possible for internal anchor text to be considered 'over optimised' in terms of diversity or does that just apply to external backlinks ? For example If you have a main site section/page thats about a service you offer and you call the page this service and the URL this service and then link to it from many internal locations (but in a logical useful manner not just for the sake of it) using this service/keyword as the link anchor text i take it this WONT ever be considered over optimised anchor text since is completely in context, makes sense, is useful and after all is what the page/section is called (so would be strange to call it and link to it via any other term) ? Second - I have a project who's backlink profile is nice and diverse and could by no means be considered over optimised on a domain level. However looking at page level a main site section/page (as above) has only one back link with exact match anchor text from the BOTW directory, so in regard to that page keyword rich anchor text from this one backlink is at 100%. However the anchor text is what the page/section is called (title and url). I presume that this is also unlikely to be considered over optimised (since makes sense, is logical helpful and would be strange to name it anything else) or could it be considered over optimised ? Thanks Dan

Anchor Text vs Rankings!
Let's say I have a page about houses for sale (which has the biggest number of search queries/month). I want to rank with that page for another variations like house for sale, and house sale. Now, if i build links only with anchor text **houses for sale **(presuming that Google is OK with that) and i will take top 3 for that KW, i will rank very high too for the other two combinations of words? Or Google treats different plural vs singular and the stop word for. This is an example based on site for one client of mine. His site is about Hotels in Mamaia (hoteluri in mamaia in romanian) and i build links with anchor text hoteluri in mamaia. For this KW i took pos 4 but for hoteluri mamaia i am on page 9 from Google.ro. These two combinations of words are 90% the same in my language. For you to know hoteluri mamaia has bigger numeber of search queries/month (6 600 vs 260).

Anchor text... How hard should one try?
I'm looking at a lot of competitor's sites, and they only seem to have gone after root domain anchor text in their link-building campaigns. Since I am just launching and am essentially a one-man band (with some hired help), is it worth my while to attempt to optimize individual keywords or pages at this point, or should I just do as they have done, and try to get domain-name links wherever I can? For that matter, should I spend more time going for the low-hanging fruit of followed blog comments, forum posts etc, or emailing influencers to try and get editorial links? Sorry if that last one is a bit broad, and thanks very much in advance for any and all help.
