SEO Implications when domain ownership and branding changes
-
I have a couple questions for the SEOMOZ community - and/or it's leader, Rand, if at all possible It is very important for us to have good information.
Scenario:
Company A: National established leader in a niche product currently receives 49% of their traffic from branded keywords. Company A wants to protect and further grow it's gains that have been made in SEO even after it is acquired by Company B.
Company B: Is a much larger company that acquires Company A.
1. What could happen to Google rankings when company A is bought out and Company B changes the registered owner and whois record? Could Google see this as a signal that the ownership has changed and then re-evaluate the ranking of Company A's website?
2. What would most likely happen if company B were to change the branding of Company A's established website? Company A currently receives about half of it's traffic from branded keywords. The acquiring company may want to change some of the SEO titles, ALT-Text, H1 tags, etc to also promote itself on the acquired company's site.
Thank you all in advance for your help!

Hi Cyrus,
Thank you for your detailed answer!
By the way, I enjoyed your informative presentation at MozCon 2012, value and trust your opinion, and have enjoyed reading your posts.
I will pass your wisdom on to our CEO for consideration.
Thanks again!

Hi there,
Sorry I'm not Rand, but let me add my 2 cents.
There's a lot of question over whether Google cares about when you change ownership of a domain. Back in 2005/6, Google became an official domain registrar (like godaddy and all the rest) so they have first-look access to registration data.
But do they care? Matt Cutts has been quoted in the past as saying when a domain changes hands, the old link values are reset to zero - but there have been many instances in the real world where this doesn't seem to be true at all.
In the end, a simple change in whois data shouldn't hurt you at all. But bigger changes, like title tags, page content and URL structures could have a major impact, depending on the severity of the change. If you want to preserve your current rankings, it's best to change things carefully while simultaneously building new links in order to send appropriate relevancy signals to Google.
To answer the second part of your question, the answer is... it depends. If your incoming links, content structure, etc are closely associated with your brand name, and the new company doesn't mess with those, it's likely you can maintain decent rankings for your previous brand. On the other hand, if your current rankings are solely dependent on things like title tags that the new company wants to change, then you could be looking at trouble.
With over 200 ranking factors to consider, it all depends on where your current rankings are coming from, and what the new company wants to change. Obviously, the fewer changes the better to maintain current rankings, but this may not align with the new companies strategy.
On the other hand, the increased Domain Authority of the new company may actually give you a boost!
Hope this helps. Best of luck!

Thank you!

In that case, I would not worry about it. Your domain/website will continue to rank for your Old Brand Name (unless it's a generic keyword). If it's a unique company / brand name, I would not worry about it.
Moreover, you can have an about us page detailing this transition on how Brand A became Brand B, just to make sure.
I hope this helps.
-
It would continue to be a full, interactive web app, not a one page website. It would have a variation of the original brand name, however.
-
Would you just have a 1 page website or still operate as is, just with a new Brand Name ?
-
Company A's domain would likely host a page describing the acquisition, but would remain in place and continue to be the destination for conversions of Company A's products.
Company B may want to change the business name of company A. It may add it's own business name to company A's business name. This would all get re-indexed and we're worried about possible ramifications.
-
What would happen to Company A's domain ? Is it going to be hosted with a page describing the acquisition and then linking to Company B ?
-
Thank you for your thoughtful response, but I don't believe Company A's site will be forwarded to Company B's. Rather, we are thinking that company B may inject some of their branding (company name, etc) into company A's site. No forwarding will likely occur.

Follr, Great question.
It's not a manual process for any Search Engine to evaluate sites/domains when whois registration, nameservers etc take place. So I would not really worry about #1.
From my experience in handling this exact situation, as long as you 301 redirect Company A to company B (if Company B's domain is what ends up being used as the only/primary website). If there are products / categories being transferred from Company A to Company B, then if you can setup 301 redirects for Red Widgets on Company A to Red Widgets page on Company B, you should be good. When you 301 redirect the domain name for Company A, which would have all sorts of brand backlinks and history and age in the SERPS, I have seen them transition over to the new domain.
So in this case, even when there's no mention of Company A in Company B's website, companyB.com ranks for Company A's branded keywords.
I hope this helps.

Is image SEO worth it for e-commerce?
I have been trying to find any case studies of people who have optimized images for SEO for their e-commerce website, but haven't been able to find any case study, indicating obtained results. I am wondering how much increase in Google Image search traffic others have been able to obtain when optimizing their e-commerce images for image SEO. I need this information to justify development resources needed for for example an image sitemap, changes to file names and alt texts, title tags and possibly EXIF data. File size is already ok. Hope someone has experience with this and can share some results. Also, would be great if Moz would do a Whiteboard Friday about this 🙂 (hint!).

How to Build SEO Focused Pages?
Your help please as with so much kicking around about what is best practice us poor novices havent got a chance to keep up! My site www.over50choices.co.uk focuses on personal finance for the over 50s and one of the product sets is Funerals: I have c40 pages on the subject and 25 pages with the word "funeral" (eg funeral plans, how to arrange a funeral, funeral directors, funeral planning etc) in the URL, Title & H1 Tag - individually each page explains specific elements of the "process" and solutions to them eg purchasing a "prepaid funeral plan" all of which were optimised for specific Keywords (because thats what i was advised was best practice 6 months ago). Am I correct in thinking that in the new world ie post Hummingbird et al, that a better strategy is to use the "product home page" as the core landing page, with sufficient content to summarise what's on offer, covering all of the individual subjects from each pages in an umbrella/topic kind of way? And to still retain the linked pages from the core landing page, as they will contain the detailed information? Many thanks Ash

Should ebook content be a download or hosted on site for SEO?
We have written ebook(s) on subjects of interest to our prospects (B-C market). We have taken many recurring questions asked over the years plus helpful graphics and put into short 12+ page ebooks. After filling out form to receive ebook- (first name & email on form) for any option below- Should we: a) send them to Landing page to download ebook to their desktop? b) send them e-mail with link to download ebook? c) send them directly to page on our site with the ebook content? d) something else? My thoughts are to do c) which will put content on site, though 'protected' via gate. This way the search engines can crawl the content. However, if that content is not directly reachable through menu will that degrade the importance of that content? Obviously we want to provide good, helpful information to prospects. We would also love to benefit from that content from a Search point of view if possible. Anyone have experience with this through A/B test or otherwise? Thanks, Steve

Local SEO Citation Questions
I have checked out some great resources from Rand and others here on SEOMoz, as well as some other great articles written on YouMoz by you guys! I have two questions when it comes to citations for Local SEO though. I have heard that Google does not really take the address into consideration when indexing local citations. Instead it is a combination of the business name + phone number + area code. On one hand this makes a lot of sense as far as Google crunching all the information. You can achieve a fairly accurate citation with just those three things and still weed out a lot of the "brand mentions" as citations. However this conflicts with a lot of what I have been reading and watching as far as whiteboard Fridays and blogs here on SEOMoz. Can someone provide some insight or sources concerning this? Secondly, in case of SEO and Web Design companies, such as ourselves, who do not receive the "One Box" for Google localized search, do citations play any lesser role in ranking for localized seo keywords? I am not sure if there is a definitive answer to these questions or if they are open ended. Regardless any insight would be invaluable!

Client has two domains for the same business
My client does hardwood flooring AND concrete polishing. He has one domain for hardwood flooring and the other website is for concrete polishing. (separate domain) Building traffic, links, authority for two sites is going to take MUCH longer for two separate domains than if they focused their effort on just ONE domain. **Any suggestions on how best to handle this? ** One of the domains is 8 years old and has 736 links pointing to it (not many of them are very good). The other one is much newer and it has 1,269 links pointing to it. What doesn't help is the first domain specifically spells out "hardwoodflooring' and the other has 'concretepolishing' in it. Keep em separate or forward them to a more universal sounding domain name? www.billybobsflooring.com for example? Thank you for ANY suggestions! 🙂 Have a great Halloween everybody, Matthew

Temporary landing pages and SEO
Hi guys! I have a question that has been running through my mind for quite a while now. On our company, we offer different products that we put on specific landing pages (one per product). This products are "live" on a 20 day period. Right now, when the product expires, we put a label "This product expired" and return a 404. Is this the right way to do it? Take into account that keeping the page "alive" is not an option. The options would be: 301 redirecting to another listing (should I worry about this implementation being wrong? Wouldn't Google find it suspicous that lots of pages redirect to the same listing?) Return a 200 instead Thanks for your time!
