Multilingual blogs and site structure
-
Hi everyone,
I have a question about multilingual blogs and site structure.
Right now, we have the typical subfolder localization structure.
ex:
domain.com/page (english site)
domain.com/ja/page (japanese site)
However, the blog is a slightly more complicated. We'd like to have english posts available in other languages (as many of our users are bilinguals). The current structure suggests we use a typical domain.com/blog or domain.com/ja/blog format, but we have issues if a Japanese (logged in) user wants to view an English page.
domain.com/blog/article would redirect them to domain.com/ja/blog/article thus 404-ing the user if the post doesn't exist in the alternate language.
One suggestion (that I have seen on sites such as etsy/spotify is to add a /en/ to the blog area:
ex
Would this be the correct way to avoid this issue? I know we could technically work around the 404 issue, but I don't want to create duplicate posts in /ja/ that are in English or visa versa. Would it affect the rest of the site if we use a /en/ subfolder just for the blog?
Another option is to use:
but I'm not sure if this alternative is better.
Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for the clarification.
I can't really comment intelligently without knowing more about the nature of the site and the intended audience.
But may I gently suggest you might want to think about the issue more broadly than as a technical SEO issue?
For instance, why do you assume that English readers wouldn't be interested in Japanese holidays when you also say many readers are bilingual? If you made an editorial decision to publish everything in both languages, the SEO piece would look very different.
I always advocate settling the editorial issues first, then plugging in the SEO component.

Hi Daniel,
Sorry if I wasn't clear. The blog posts would usually be written in the original language. So we'll have some in English and some in Japanese. It's likely that we will translate some posts but there will be some that are too culture based to be useful in a different language. (Say a post about a Japanese holiday that might not be useful in English)
So to answer your question, there will definitely be some posts in English that are not translated into Japanese and visa versa.

Very interesting. I am working on a similar issue for a client. The site, including a blog, will be available in 5 languages.
But I'm not sure I precisely understand your issue.
Are all your blog posts originally written in one language only -- and that is that language English?
Do you ever alternate languages within a blog post?
Do you intend to have identical posts in both English and Japanese ? Or will there be some English-only posts, and some Japanese-only posts?
From you post, it sounds like you might be intending to translate some posts but not others. Why is that?
It seems to me, you have to sort through these editorial issues first before coming up with an SEO strategy.
It all comes down to who your intended audience is and how they can best be served.

Does anyone know the linking of hashtags on Wix sites does it negatively or postively impact SEO. It is coming up as an error in site crawls 'Pages with 404 errors' Anyone got any experience please?
Does anyone know the linking of hashtags on Wix sites does it negatively or positively impact SEO. It is coming up as an error in site crawls 'Pages with 404 errors' Anyone got any experience please? For example at the bottom of this blog post https://www.poppyandperle.com/post/face-painting-a-global-language the hashtags are linked, but they don't go to a page, they go to search results of all other blogs using that hashtag. Seems a bit of a strange approach to me.

Why is Google not indexing my site?
I'm a bit confused as to why my site just isn't indexing on Google. Even if I type in my brand name, my social channels rank and there's no evidence of my website. I've followed all of the advice I've read and gone into webmaster tools and got the Wordpress yoast plug-in but nothing seems to be making a difference! One thing I've noticed, in Google Webmaster Tools it says "Couldn’t communicate with the DNS server." in site errors. I've called GoDaddy and they said that everything is fine. A bit frustrating. Trying to work out what my next steps should be but feeling a bit lost to be honest! Any help GREATLY appreciated!

No google traffic for this site? Help?
Hi We have not done this web site http://climateacs.co.uk but have now picked it up and its getting no traffic what so ever from google do you think its been blacklisted? I have added it to my webmaster tools and there are no manual actions on it and most of the backlinks on google webmaster tools are from yell.com. However when I run it on opensiteexplorer I am seeing some chinese type links?? It is not really showing many search queries at all when you view them in webmaster tools under United Kingdom. I was going to start citation building for the address to help support the google places entry but just wanted to see what other peoples opinion was really on this site? Thanks Tracy

What do the mozzers think about this site of mine?
Hello SEO MOzzers, I am today wanting your feedback on a site that I recently went live with. My Google rankings for the main keywords are doing very well considering the site has been live for 3 weeks now. I of course have a list of items that i'm still working on, completing meta description tags, title tags, adding copy content to category pages, updating h1 tags, working on our backlinking campaign, etc. The site is www.profitness-supplies.com Let me know what you think Mozzers

Merging two sites into one
I have two websites, www.joecline.com and www.affinityproperties.com. Originally, I wanted joecline.com to be focused on west austin only. I now realize that I only have time to really handle the promotion of one site. I'm wondering SEOwise, which url would be better to keep. I would consolidate all content on one site and 301 the migrated site to the new URLs in the domain which I would keep. Any ideas would be great. Thanks Joe
