Same article published to 3 different client owned sites
-
My client is publishing their own articles simultaneously on three sites, sites which they own. What can and should they be doing to ensure the get maximum exposure without penalty?
-
Truth be told, I'm not sure. Google says they reserve the right to not follow a rel=canonical, but that being said, I don't know why they wouldn't in this case. I think the attribution is probably much less important just because it could come in so many different forms (link at the top of the post, link at the bottom, worded one way or another, etc), which becomes different to track and account for on the search engine side.

Hi Eric.
Just to be clear, is the attribution a must have or will the canonical tag suffice? If it's necessary, is there specific wording to be used?

Hi Donna,
What your client is doing will cause duplicate content issue. Hopefully nothing happened to the ranking yet. I would suggest you use cross-domain canonical tag to tell Google which version of the article you want to show up on the search results.
Instead of sharing the same article on three sites, your client can increase the exposure by sharing it on Social Media platforms or send the article to subscribers on that topic (if it applies).
There are many ways to increase exposure but sharing the same article on multiple site will only cause harm.

I assume all of these sites are thematically related (eg. tractorparts.com, tractorstories.com, and tractorwarehouse.com), right? If not, get them to stop. It's hard to imagine a reason to post many tractor articles on a massage website. If they are related, you might have them give attribution to one of the sites and then cross-domain rel="canonical" it to the place it was first posted. That at the very least will let search engines know that it first came from another site and that it hasn't simply been stolen.
You see things like this all the time. For example, Mitch Joel write for HuffPo, Vancouver Sun, etc and reposts the articles to his blog with a link to the original and a statement about it first appearing on that other site.

If all three sites have the same article, one or two of the sites could be filtered from the Google SERPs because of duplicate content. This is much more likely to happen if these sites link to one another.
If there are only a couple of these articles there should not be much of a problem beyond filtering.
However, if they have many articles published this way then they could be hit with a Panda problem. To avoid that they could use a cross domain canonical to attribute the articles to a single site. To learn about that read these...

You can attribute all of the articles to a single site to give that site maximum value or distribute the attributions to give each site a little value.

Is there harm in publishing too much content, at once?
We are working on catching up with some competition, who has done a much better job over the last few years with content creation. We normally publish 1 article a day but are looking at scaling that up to 3 to 4 articles a day so we can get our content out there to compete with the other websites, in keyword space we currently aren't in. Is there a negative impact on publishing too much content at once? Is there a negative impact on publishing too much content at once? Besides the probable inability to market all of it, I don't see any issues since we will be getting our articles indexed and out there for Google to start building value on them. However, some team members are apprehensive about doing too much at once. What are your thoughts Moz Community?

Different WP Taxonomies seen as duplicate content
Hey guys, We're seeing Moz report "duplicate" content on pages like: mysite.com/interesting-category/ and mysite.com/interesting-tag. Why exactly is this, and is there something that we should do about this? Obviously some of the same posts will intersect on pages like category, tag, author pages. Thanks

Blog.site.com vs site.com/blog
Which is better for SEO: blog.site.com or site.com/blog. In other words, is it better to have the blog running in a subdomain or as a director within the main site? Right now we are running as a subdomain, but want to be sure Google isn't considering that a separate site. The blog shows up separately on Google Analytics, which makes me think site.com/blog is better if for no other reason, it would give our domain greater traffic. Not sure if this matters, but some site info: our site is a sharing economy tool for renting your stuff we are running the blog on Wordpress blog traffic is about 5% of total traffic

How best to handle on-site blogs for multiple site views in Magento?
Hi, I'm working with a site on Magento with views for UK, US and FR websites. Currently they have a French WordPress Blog that is pulled into the French site view and an English one that appears on both the US and UK views. Of course the problem here is that the US and UK views are duplicating content so these needs sorting super-fast. The plan is to disconnect the US view from the current English blog and create a dedicated US onsite blog. However, should we continue to use WordPress or instead use an alternative blog module or plugin for Magento? Cost is an issue and running three separate blogs and the cost of plugging these into each site view. However, getting these right for SEO is the most important factor here. I'm also concerned about the mess of multiple plugins causing page speed issues etc... My instinct is to go with WordPress, but I'm keen to hear what others think or have experience of.

If we use content copied from another site ( assuming we have not plagerized), does it hurt our Google Rankings?
We have permission from another company to copy their content and use it on our site. This happens when we are describing a manufacturer's product and we copy pages from their site and add these pages to our site in order to describe the product we are selling. Is this considered duplicate content? Can this practice hurt us?

Potential effects of PLR articles
I'm sitting on several hundred PLR articles that, with a bit of editing, would fit well into on of my sites. This site otherwise produces new unique content every week, including videos, news and articles. These PLR articles are very popular, copyscape shows at least 30 other sites are using some or all of the pieces, but the articles themselves are the sort of information pieces that don't really get old or change over time. Never having gone for the direct use of PLR articles (have spun quite a few unique pieces in my time though), I'm wondering if there could be a negative effect to using them? We're not in Google News or anything so don't have to worry about that, just wondering if it would diminish the effect of my unique pieces at all?
