What Happened on the 17th?

Alright, what gives? Something major with Google SERPs went down on Jan. 17th. I have a site that was ranking well for 7 keywords - normal fluctuations from page 1-3, for 8 months. We never had any issues with Panda/Penguin and in fact, Nov./Dec. were excellent months.
Then BAM, on the 17th all but 2 keywords tanked...not even in the top 100! 2 remain on page 2/3 - very odd....I've seen lots of talk about something happening...anyone have a better idea or even KNOW what happened?

Oh this was/is major. I had one keyword go from # 8 to #480

My 2nd big key word dropped from #2 to 7-8 and now it is finally back up to two. I was so excited to reach #2...when the fall happened I just thought well time to start doing more SEO.

Yes, I know about Panda...but this stuff happened on the evening of the 17th - we dropped like a rock./

It's frustrating - not because it happened, but because I don;t know WHAT happened and if I don't know what happened I can't fix it!

Same problem here! All white hat in-house SEO work with nothing changing on our end, and then a big drop in early-mid Jan. Haven't seen any Google updates though that would explain this...?

Interesting! Traffic isn't too bad - my guess is that's because we use cpc too and maybe the keywords that tanked didn't bring in much organic traffic anyway but some of my keywords went from #11 to #370!

There was another post on this on the 19th or so. There was some sort of update and traffic to a few of my sites are down as well.

What happens to crawled URLs subsequently blocked by robots.txt?
We have a very large store with 278,146 individual product pages. Since these are all various sizes and packaging quantities of less than 200 product categories my feeling is that Google would be better off making sure our category pages are indexed. I would like to block all product pages via robots.txt until we are sure all category pages are indexed, then unblock them. Our product pages rarely change, no ratings or product reviews so there is little reason for a search engine to revisit a product page. The sales team is afraid blocking a previously indexed product page will result in in it being removed from the Google index and would prefer to submit the categories by hand, 10 per day via requested crawling. Which is the better practice?

Huge problem : All our Internal Links Dropped from 9.000 to 0.What happened?
Hi, I just noticed a huge large problem in our rankings. Our rankings suddenly dropped for more than 50 %. Of course, I immediately started to research the issue. And under Links, I found that we somehow lost all of our internal links! They have dropped from 9k to 0. Now, I am sure that we do have some internal links on our site ( since I put them there myself). Could you please tell me what is going on and how I can fix this issue? Something happened within the last 2 weeks on our WordPress-hosted site that created "duplicates" by counting www.company.com/example and company.com/example (without the 'www.') as separate pages. Any idea what could have happened, and how to fix it?
Our website is running through WordPress. We've been running Moz for over a month now. Only recently, within the past 2 weeks, have we been alerted to over 100 duplicate pages. It appears something happened that created a duplicate of every single page on our site; "www.company.com/example" and "company.com/example." Again, according to our MOZ, this is a recent issue. I'm almost certain that prior to a couple of weeks ago, there existed both forms of the URL that directed to the same page without be counting as a duplicate. Thanks for you help!

Http to Https implementation - What happens to the backlinks?
UPDATE: Found a source that says that Google recognizes the redirects, so it should be fine leaving backlinks as is - https://www.seroundtable.com/google-link-https-20552.html Hi again Mozers, When a site's protocol is changed from http to https, what impact would it have on the backlinks? Especially, when the backlinks doesn't contain any protocal mentioned. Thanks in advance Malika

How will this affect the rankings and traffic of the new site once this happens?
Hi, we will be moving a clients’ site address from one domain to another and will of course be doing 301 redirects and notifying Google of the site address change in WMT. The problem is, that at some point in the future (say 3-6 months), the old domain will be going live with a new site as the current client does not own the domain and the owner will be wanting it back unfortunately. How will this affect the rankings and traffic of the new site (new domain) once this (old domain with new site) happens? Will the site address change be enough to keep the rankings but it will lose backlink traffic? Or will rankings go down since the 301 redirects will in essence no longer be in affect? 95% of organic traffic lands in my homepage, despite having a 250 page website with a "seo optimized" hierarchical structure. Any suggestion as to what might be happening?

What should happen to expired real estate listings?
For a real estate website, when a house is sold or taken off of the market. What should happen to the listing? 301 redirect it to the grouping (such as zip code or city) which that listing resides in? 404 it?

What happen if a canonical tag points to a noindex page?

I have question. We have hundreds of affiliates that have implemented our datafeed on their websites, and to avoid duplicate content issues we are requiring them to put a canonical tag on their own product pages pointing to our own original product page. So, for example, if an affiliate has a page about our Product 101, they will have to add a canonical tag pointing to the corresponding product page on our own website: www.ourwebsite.com/products/product101 Now, since many of our product pages have defined a "noindex" tag (due to Panda issues), may that be a problem? In other words: what kind of problems could cause having our affiliates defining a canonical tag on their own product pages pointing to the original product page on our website which have a "noindex" met tag defined? Maybe it is a stupid question we shouldn't worry about, but any thoughts about this scenario are very welcome! Thank you in advance.0
