If my home page never shows up in SERPS but other pages do, does that mean Google is penalizing me?
-
So my website I do local SEO for, xyz.com is finally getting better on some keywords (Thanks SEOMOZ)
But only pages that are like this xyz.com/better_widgets_ or xyz.com/mousetrap_removals
Is Google penalizing me possibly for some duplicate content websites I have out there (working on, I know I know it is bad)...

I'm pretty sure Irving means:
site:www.xyz.com
Put that in the search bar itself.

When you say do site search do you mean do this?
www.xyz.com : search
or
http://www.xyz.com : search

Is the homepage showing up as indexed in Google - do a site: search
If you did link building to your homepage (like everyone always does) with your keywords and now it's not showing up that's probably a penalty. You know the words you used as anchor texts for your link building, are those words no longer ranking?
Also does your site name rank IE if your site is besttraininguk.com are you ranking for besttraininguk - if not you have a trademark suppresion

If you are being penalised, it sounds like you're working on the issue (employ the use of rel=canonical tags while you're rewriting the content). So let's look at ways to see if you have been penalised by Google.
First of all, check your messages in webmaster tools to see if you have received any warnings from Google. If you have, then you will need to follow their advice on getting the penalty removed.
If there's no warning, your site may have been affected by link devaluation or a strictly algorithmic penalty. When you type your brand name into Google - what comes up first? Is it your homepage? Similarly, if you type in your full web address (http://www.domain.com) into the Google search bar, does that page come up first?
If the answer to either of the last 2 questions is "no", then there may be some penalty involved. In which case, I would first rule out any possibility of your site being actively penalised by checking webmaster tools and then reviewing what links are pointing your homepage. If it is a very spammy link profile, you will need to work on improving it with authoritative and editorial links. I'd only spend time actively trying to remove links if you have a penalty, or you believe that the vast majority of links to your sites homepage or spammy.

SERPs showing hundreds of nonexistent pages
My site has this page (URL) that actually exists on my site https://mysite.com/ranking/rankings-of-nike-running-shoes but somehow I can see the following versions in SERPs (these URLs are not physically available on my site): https://mysite.com/ranking/rankings-of-rankings-of-rankings-of-nike-running-shoes

https://mysite.com/ranking/rankings-of-rankings-of-nike-running-shoes I even started getting traffic from these URLs that are in Google's index. So, only the first one actually existins on my site: https://mysite.com/ranking/rankings-of-nike-running-shoes https://mysite.com/ranking**/rankings-of-rankings-of-**rankings-of-nike-running-shoes https://mysite.com/ranking/**rankings-of-**rankings-of-nike-running-shoes Questions are:
a. I'm not sure how the latter two - 2) and 3) - got in Google's index.
b. what do I do with them. My idea is to 301 redirect them to the actual page that exists https://mysite.com/ranking/rankings-of-nike-running-shoes Do I need to also somehow remove the faulty URLs - 2) and 3) - from Google's index or 301 redirecting is enough?0 -
Tough SEO problem, Google not caching page correctly
My web site is http://www.mercimamanboutique.com/ Cached version of French version is, cache:www.mercimamanboutique.com/fr-fr/ showing incorrectly The German version: cache:www.mercimamanboutique.com/de-de/ is showing correctly. I have resubmitted site links, and asked Google re-index the web site many times. The German version always gets cached properly, but the French version never does. This is frustrating me, any idea why? Thanks.

Pages to be indexed in Google
Hi, We have 70K posts in our site but Google has scanned 500K pages and these extra pages are category pages or User profile pages. Each category has a page and each user has a page. When we have 90K users so Google has indexed 90K pages of users alone. My question is. Should we leave it as they are or should we block them from being indexed? As we get unwanted landings to the pages and huge bounce rate. If we need to remove what needs to be done? Robots block or Noindex/Nofollow Regards

Should i put a full article on my home page to get google to visit more
Hi, our site is www.in2town.co.uk and i am thinking of putting an article on my home page in the middle under where it says lifestyle news, and getting rid of the middle column and instead have the latest news there to try and get google to visit more. I would like to know if you think this would look messy and not user friendly and if you think if i did do it would it get google to visit the site more often. all day we are always adding articles but on the home page it only shows a few lines of the article so i am concerned that these few lines are not getting google interested in visiting our site more often. we were on page one with our site but now since the upgrade we are on page eight so we are trying to combat this The article would change each time we put a new article on the site. so the article could be on there for ten mins before a new one is there any thoughts on this would be great

301 lots of old pages to home page
Will it hurt me if i redirect a few hundred old pages to my home page? I currently have a mess on my hands with many 404's showing up after moving my site to a new ecommerce server. We have been at the new server for 2 years but still have 337 404s showing up in google webmaster tools. I don't think it would affect users as very few people woudl find those old links but I don't want to mess with google. Also, how much are those 404s hurting my rank?
