Significant Drop in Rankings without Explanation
-
My company has experienced a significant drop in rankings in the last month or so. How significant? Across our top 11 keywords, we've dropped an average of 6 positions. Some have dropped less (1 or 2) and some have dropped way more (38).
We work really hard to provide great content on our site and have been building out our link profile with guest blogging on relevant sites (dailyshotofcoffee.com, for example). No major changes have been made to the URL structure or content on the pages that are ranking for our key terms, so I am not sure where the drop is coming from.
For example: One of our key terms is "espresso machine" and we went from #9 to #22 in the last few weeks. We have not made any changes to the main content on the page that is ranking since September. Our on-site page report for this page has us nailing all of the critical factors, most of the high importance factors (not exact keyword in page titles - we use "espresso machines" as that is one of our other terms - or "avoid keyword stuffing" - unfortunately, our products are also named with "espresso machine" and i can't very well not follow those links or remove the term from their names), all of the moderate importance factors, and most of the low importance factors. It has been reporting this way since September.
Most of our key terms are this way (haven't had content changed in the last several weeks to months and have great on-page grades). We don't engage in spammy link building (though I did some work this fall on cleaning up bad links a previous SEO company had built out). I'm just really taken aback by the sudden drop in rankings across the board.
Any insight or advice anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated!

Wanted to add one more thing. Grrr....Q&A is being buggy for me today...just typed a bunch and then lost it.
You could go after duplicates by filing DMCA takedown requests but it is likely more hassle than it is worth.
Also, to help you build content that outshines your competitors, this may help. When my husband was buying our Rancillo he did a pile of online research. He ended up spending most of his time on Youtube watching videos of how each machine worked. If you can provide information that people can't get on other sites then Google will like you, visitors will stay longer and you will probably sell more machines.

EGOL's given you some good tips.
There was an article on SERoundtable today that had a neat idea about a way to deter people from stealing your content and that was to link to yourself within the content. (http://www.seroundtable.com/stolen-content-linking-16363.html and original discussion on the HighRankings forum here: This article has some additional tips too.) It may not work for all sites, but it might help somewhat.
However, if your drop was mid January then this probably isn't Panda (unless you think it happened on January 22.)
It's hard to say what the cause could be though without digging deeper into your site and your analytics. One thought I had was that when you mentioned you did work cleaning out bad links your previous SEO company made, you possibly could have removed links that had actually been helping. I used to think that spammy article and directory links were useless, but I have now done several unnatural links penalty removals for sites that were ranking really well for competitive terms...well ranking well before their penalty that is. These rankings were gained on the back of thousands of spammy article links.
Funny story...When I was looking at your site and quickly chose a product to check out its description, after I did my work I looked at the picture and realized that it was the same coffee maker that we own. We love our Rancillo.

EGOL,
Thank you for your response.
I would first like to clarify that I don't think I deserve to have a higher ranking. We have worked for years on our content and building out unique and creative information (a couple thousand pages of it). As a result, over the last year, our site has been on the first page for most of our key terms. The reason I posted was just to get some feedback on why the rankings changed so drastically (Google update?) and how to recover.
As a retail site, it really isn't feasible for us to build out our category and home pages like bestespressomachine.org has. I do, however, see what you are saying about the amount of information their site (the ranking page, in particular) contains and how optimized it is for those terms.
To address the duplicate content, please see the reply I had posted above:
"We don't use stock information from manufacturers and actually put a lot of time and effort into creating informational, clever, and unique descriptions. Unfortunately, a lot of people copy our product descriptions.
Do you have any advice on how to deal with others copying our content? I'd love an automated way of receiving a report on duplicate text (as we have thousands of pages on our site). I could then contact those sites and at least ask them to remove the content. Also, is there any way of notifying Google of sites copying our content?"
I would appreciate any feedback you could provide in that regard.
Best,
Kaylie

I see your site at #15 from the eastern USA.
I don't see any special reason why your site deserves a spot on the first page.
If I was google I would rank the homepage of thebestespressomachines.org/ over your category page for "expresso machines".
If I owned your site I would attack with the homepage by reoptimizing. If I owned your site I would be working on original content. I see your content on lots of other sites.
The homepage of thebestespressomachines.org/ (weakest competitor on page 1 of the SERPs IMO) has everything that everybody everywhere is searching for about expresso machines. Then when you click deeper the content can be impressive.
Overall superior site, IMO.
-
Also of note is the sites that have taken the first page/top of second page results for the "espresso machine" term.
The first page has 2 relevant sites, 1 site that's not very built out, and the rest are major retailers (Amazon, Williams Sonoma, Macys, Best Buy.). Second page has eBay in the top spot.
Sure, the retail sites sell espresso machines. But some of them only sell a few espresso machines and, on all of them, there isn't a lot of content to support these products. It seems to me that they are ranking on this term because they are large sites in general, which means searchers are not being served up the most relevant results. Instead, they are being served mass retail sites.
sigh

Keri,
Thanks for clearing that up. Have you heard of others experiencing a drop in rankings recently or any insight into recent Google updates?
-
Thanks for your response, Jeff!
I have searched around a bit in the Q&A but haven't found anyone else experiencing this particular issue.
-
Thanks for your response!
We started guest blogging as a way of building out actual links and recovering from the spammy link building a previous company had done on our behalf. We only guest blog on sites that relate to our products (coffee sites, essentially). We write unique content for each blog article and only include a few, very relevant links in each one.
-
I don't know the exact date but I believe they started dropping in mid-January-ish.
We don't use stock information from manufacturers and actually put a lot of time and effort into creating informational, clever, and unique descriptions. Unfortunately, a lot of people copy our product descriptions.
Do you have any advice on how to deal with others copying our content? I'd love an automated way of receiving a report on duplicate text (as we have thousands of pages on our site). I could then contact those sites and at least ask them to remove the content. Also, is there any way of notifying Google of sites copying our content?

Jeff, it's actually a different situation here. A couple of weeks ago, a large number of links stopped showing for many people in GWT, but their rankings stayed the same. In this poster's case, the actual rankings are changing.
-
I would say stop the guest blogging link building, pretty sure I read somewhere it's frowned upon if you have a lot of links coming in from blogs, especially if the blog is not related to your theme/products.
Reason being I believe is that people can easily set up automated linking systems to take advantage of blogs. Especially don't be pointing links to your site from a page if it is blatently being used by link spammers even if it's relative to your site, G will see these spammers and your link will be getting mixed in with the crud.
Make sure there is no overo-ptimization on your site either.
Hope this helps, all the best

Can you pinpoint the day of your traffic drop? There was a Panda update on Jan 22 and also Dec 21. A lot of sites that sell products and use the stock descriptions are being affected by Panda. This could be the case for your site. I randomly clicked on a product from your home page and took chunks of text and searched Google for it enclosed in quotes and found thousands of sites with the same text. If the date of your traffic drop coincides with Panda then this may be the issue.
-
Kaylie,
I had something fairly similar happen to my site (although my situation is different than yours is for a few reasons).
(There was a discussion about this a few weeks ago in the Q&A)
What I noticed was that (I assume that your talking about Google rankings) my link profile was diminished pretty significantly according Webmaster Tools. A few others had the same thing happen to their site, I don't really know exactly what happened, but slowly yet surely the link number is going back up. If that is the issue I can dig up those Q&A's...
A shot in the dark but it might be worth taking a look at...

Do you think profanity in the content can harm a site's rankings?
In my early 20's I authored an ebook that provides men with natural ways to improve their ahem... "bedroom performance". I'm now in my mid 30s, and while it's not such an enthralling topic, the thing makes me 80 or so bucks a day on good days, and it actually works. I update the blog from time to time and build links to it on occasion from good sources. I've carried my SEO knowledge to a more "reputable" business, but this project is still interesting to me, because it's fully mine. I am more interested in getting it to rank and convert than anything, but following the same techniques that are working to grow the other business, this one continues to tank. Disavow bad links, prune thin content.. no difference. However, one thing I just noticed now are my search queries in the reports. When I first started blogging on this, I was real loose with my tongue, and spoke quite frankly (and dirty to various degrees). I'm much more refined and professional in how I write now. However, the queries I'm ranking for... a lot of d words, c words (in the sex sense)... sounds almost pornographic. Think Google may be seeing this, and putting me lower in rankings or in some sort of lower level category because of it? Heard anything about google penalizing for profanity? I guess in this time of authority and trust, that can hurt both of those... but I wonder if anyone's heard any actual confirmation of this or has any experience with this? Thanks!

New Website Old Domain - Still Poor Rankings after 1 Year - Tagging & Content the culprit?
I've run a live wedding band in Boston for almost 30 years, that used to rank very well in organic search. I was hit by the Panda Updates August of 2014, and rankings literally vanished. I hired an SEO company to rectify the situation and create a new WordPress website -which launched January 15, 2015. Kept my old domain: www.shineband.com Rankings remained pretty much non-existent. I was then told that 10% of my links were bad. After lots of grunt work, I sent in a disavow request in early June via Google Wemaster Tools. It's now mid October, rankings have remained pretty much non-existent. Without much experience, I got Moz Pro to help take control of my own SEO and help identify some problems (over 60 pages of medium priority issues: title tag character length and meta description). Also some helpful reports by www.siteliner.com and www.feinternational.com both mentioned a Duplicate Content issue. I had old blog posts from a different domain (now 301 redirecting to the main site) migrated to my new website's internal blog, http://www.shineband.com/best-boston-wedding-band-blog/ as suggested by the SEO company I hired. It appears that by doing that -the the older blog posts show as pages in the back end of WordPress with the poor meta and tile issues AS WELL AS probably creating a primary reason for duplicate content issues (with links back to the site). Could this most likely be viewed as spamming or (unofficial) SEO penalty? As SEO companies far and wide daily try to persuade me to hire them to fix my ranking -can't say I trust much. My plan: put most of the old blog posts into the Trash, via WordPress -rather than try and optimize each page (over 60) adjusting tagging, titles and duplicate content. Nobody really reads a quick post from 2009... I believe this could be beneficial and that those pages are more hurtful than helpful. Is that a bad idea, not knowing if those pages carry much juice? Realize my domain authority not great. No grand expectations, but is this a good move? What would be my next step afterwards, some kind of resubmitting of the site, then? This has been painful, business has fallen, can't through more dough at this. THANK YOU!

Trafic drop after a huge indexation
Hello everyone, My website used to have about 500k indexed pages in Google. After publishing fresh sitemaps and a little local "buzz", it now has about 6 millions indexed pages and the numbers are skyrocketing (GWT says 7 millions and it will probably keep going). My website has a total number of pages of 10 millions. I used to have about 5k organic visite each day, but since the big indexation has started, I now have half less. I read many things about that kind of trafic drop, and it seems to be a normal step when indexing a huge site. I just wanted to know if you guys had any similar experiences and if yes, if there are specific tasks to do in order to recover/develop the organic trafic or if it's just a matter of time. Thanks for your help and share of experiences 😉

Website traffic dropped 50% after 14th November same day GWT reported a DNS error
HI there. On 14th November GWT reported a DNS error on my site I checked with my hosts but they said there was nothing wrong. I then went searching for answers and found it happened to lot of people on that specific day see http://moz.com/blog/was-there-a-november-14th-google-update. After that time my website traffic dropped by 50% over the period of a week and is still sitting on 50% of what it was. I then moved the site to VPS, had a few DNS errors - that were the cause of my hosts - so i moved back to shared hosting last weekend and now DNS issues are solved. However the original DNS issue is still unknown I dont know what went wrong and want to rectify issue. I dont sell ads and write original content 4 times a day. I have a miniscule bounce rate, my site speed is okay and i dont stuff keywords in my content although i was careless with my <alt tags="">so they could be considered keyword stuffing (and i have up to 10 images on one post). But i have been removing all the keywords in my images theres over 3000 posts so its taking time). My impressions have dropped from 10,000 a day to 2,500 and I have no idea why.</alt> My website has been building traffic consistently for the last 2 years. Only now has it crashed a bit. Have you any advice on what I can do to solve this problem or rather find the cause of the issue. Im not a pro seo person and do this blog in my free time so am not an expert on data analyzing etc.... thanks alot

How important is Social Media for building domain authority / Google rankings? Are there any cases?
I really would like to know if someone tested the importance of Social Media for Google rankings.

Are there some sites who build authority only by doing good social media?
Ofcourse, I know it is all about the mix (content, linkbuilding, social media, etc.) but how important is it?
I know many sites who rank good without any form of social media, but I do not know any sites who do only social media and rank high. I hope there are some good cases which give good insight. ps. I know it becomes more and more important...0 -
Can a google data refresh knock your pages out of the rankings?
I see that around mid November 2013 a handful of my sites pages dropped off of Google completely. It was around the data refreshes in November, and while everyone says it doesn't effect that much I was wondering if anyone knew if it could knock some of my pages out of the rankings for a specific keyword. Note - we had previously held muliple listings for different pages on our site for this particular keyword. Google kept the highest ranking and knocked the lower ones off. See attached image of our keyword ranking history to see what I mean. DcJJM0M

Why do in-site search result pages rank better than my product pages?
Maybe this is a common SERP for a generic product type but I'm seeing it a lot more often. Here is an example SERP "rolling stools". The top 4 results are dynamic in-site search pages from Sears, ebay and Amazon (among others). I understand their influence and authority but why would a search return a dynamic in-site SERP instead of a solid product page. A better question would be - How do I get my in-site SERPs to rank or how do I get my client's page to rise above the #5 spot is currently ranks at? Thanks

Can AJAX implementation affect the rankings in Google Panda?
Hi there, I have the following situation with one of our job sites. We migrate the site to a new application, which is better from design point of view and also usability. For this we use a lot AJAX especially in searches. So every time a user is filtering down their search new results will be shown on the page, at the same url and with no page load. But, having this implementation. affected Bounce rate - which increased from 38% to nearly 60%, PI/visits - which are now half, at 3 and also Avg Time on Site is half that is used to be coming to 2,5 min from nearly 6 min. From Rand post, it is clearly that the content is very important in Google Panda, and all of these parameters we should consider, as it is telling the quality of the content. So, my question will be, can this site be hit by Panda updates (maybe later on) because Bounce Rate, PI/Visits and Avg Time on site, decreased in such way? At the moment we don't measure the Ajax impresion, but as I understood that we can do that though virtual pages in GA, does anyone of you have the experience how to handle this? Won't be this an artificial increase? Thanks, Irina
