Value of key word based URL
-
I was researching some keywords and I found something that kind of confuses me. If you search google for Denver IT Consulting the second hit is for a site** - **denveritconsulting.com. This is a one page site with just a paragraph of text and links to the actual company's site but it's getting the second place on a pretty good keyword.
I also checked open site explorer and they have no links at all.
I am assuming that their placement is based solely on the exact match of the keywords in the URL?
Does anyone have any feedback on this? I have purchased and used keyword based URLs in the past but I have never done or seen something like this that is so successful.
Any input on this would be great.
Thanks!

Thanks for the help guys.
I will not get into anything like that but it will be interesting to see if they maintain that position.
Thanks again

In addition to Ryan's great answer, Matt Cutts said that exact match domains will not be holding much weight anymore. It was abused too much be SEOs. Also, OSE is not 100% accurate, but it is a good measuring stick for backlink competitor analysis. Compare OSE to your own GWT links and see that difference.

Hi Steve,
Generally speaking the practice of using keyword based domains in this manner is not helpful. There are better ways to spend your time to earn traffic.
This tactic is called creating a Doorway Page. It is a violation of Google's Guidelines and subject to a site penalty.
Google Adwords shows 210 hits per month for the exact match keyword. It is unlikely the site holds any ranking for other terms. The domain name and site title are optimized for a single keyword.
A legitimate SEO should definitely be able to help any quality Denver IT consulting websites outrank the example site you shared. Even the top ranked site is not very well optimized.

URL Structure
Hi, Hope you are all well. On our website we have a 'blog' and a 'news' section. The blog is located on "/blog" - but when you click on a post the url structure changes to /name-of-article and the blog subdomain isn't included. Would it be better to have "blog/name-of-article as this would then make the blog perform better in search results? Also, if our news page is under /news - but when you click on an article it changes to /news-article/name-of-article Wouldn't it be better to have /news/name-of-article Thanks a lot!! 🙂

How to handle temporary campaign URLs
Hi, We have just run a yearly returning commercial campaign for which we have created optimized URL's. (e.g. www.domain.tld/campaign including the category and brand names after the campaign www.domain.tld./campaign/womens This has resulted in 4500+ URL's being indexed in Google including the campaign name, now the campaign is over and these URL's do not exist anymore. How should we handle those URL's? 1.) 301 them to the correct category without the campaign name 2.) Create a static page www.domain.tld/campaign to which we 301 all URL's that have the campaign name in them Do you have any other suggestions on what the best approach would be? This is a yearly commercial campaign so in a year time we will have the same URL's again. Thanks, Chris

Is there actual risk to having multiple URLs that frame in main url? Or is it just bad form and waste of money?
Client has many urls that just frame in the main site. It seems like a total waste of money, but if they are frames, is there an actual risk?

Query string in url - duplicate content?
Hi everyone I would appreciate some advice on the following. I have a page which has some nice content on but it also has a search functionality. When a search is run a querystrong is run. So i will get something like mypage.php?id=20 etc. With many different url potentials, will each query string be seen as a different page? If so i don't want duplicate content. So am i best putting canonical tags in the head tags on mypage.php ? to avoid Google seeing potential duplicate content. Many thanks for all your advice.

Google Local Results and URL Titles
After searching for (city name) (business type) a number of my competitor's sites come up with the title of their web page as the results (including geographic descriptors). However, my site is listed by name and does not reflect our URL title. How is this possible (did someone manually change the title of our listing?) and how can I change this back so that the title includes a geo descriptor? Do I simply edit the listing under google places or will this have a negative effect on our rankings?
